Oh I tried giving her tomatoes, both the big one and the small one.... her reaction is: she will sniff... take a small bite then she will huff and sit at the corner... and if I put the tomato (doesn't matter sliced, diced or cubed) in the cage, she will kick/roll/push it to the furthest end where it will be forgotten....

Capsicum, I have to trick her into eating it... usually I'll slice it into strips and put it together with the carrots... only then she will eat.... If I just give her capsicum on its own... she will do the same thing she does to the tomato...

he was running to his favorite a corner in my room to enjoy his treat. his just chills there whenever i am working on the computer.  laugh.gif u just have to find a treat your gp loves. Henry loves tomatoes, but if i try to ask him to do something with a carrot instead he just gives me a death stare  sweat.gif

thanks, i underestimated gp's intelligence. really interested to train him more to see what other funny tricks he could do.. it's fun to watch them do anything, lol  laugh.gif

it could be possibly in-bred by the breeder whom i got my GP from.. since he didnt know as well, and placed the female GP i got, along with his other male GPs..

nothing i can do now, except pray they grow up normal.. or pray they are not in-bred.. today is the 2nd month they are in my house.. sad.gif
*
the chance of in breed from local pet shop or some newbies breeder are very high.. they often buy a pair straight out of the shop.. which often are sibling.. so nothing u can do.. their health, some might be more susceptible to disease and sickness.. but if u give them the right care and food.. they should do fine for at least 3-5 year.. on average a pure breed should live up to 5-9 year.... so in breed guinea pig have shorter life span.. ohmy.gif

Hi guys,

1st time poster to this thread.

I just got a GP today. Hes a fairly dark short haired GP, maybe mixed abby. I notice that when I brought him home he had some white specs on the tips of the hair on his head. I checked the ears and there were a few specks near the ears. none of the specks were moving so I was not too bothered initially. Also still I stupidly introduced him to another one of my short haired GPs who's been problem free so far. so am now worried for the both of them

However, I notice that he's been scratching his sides tonight. So am now worried that it might be lice. Hes otherwise alert and healthy looking. Pictures below.

You can see that he has tiny white specks on this tips of some of his hairs. All static so far.

Anyone have any experience with this? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced fellas.

changing ur bedding type.. wood chips or shelving is not advisable.. wood pellet is ok.. or fleece...

don't get too excited yeah? haha apparently, you are not supposed to handle her so much during pregnancy.. i didnt know, but i always handle them properly.. mine was even a bit docile during the pregnancy period, which led me to believe that she is used to me.. sad.gif now all she does is run around when i try to pick her up..
your place got a lot of noise? maybe it will help calm the pregnant GP by giving her a hidehouse.. i gave mine a long "tunnel" made by bending a grid and cover+line with newspaper+lots of hay.. now the "tunnel" is a good toy that they play "merry-go-round" with..

i also used to roll up a thick newspaper (about 10 pages) and clipped them on the sides and it makes a good tunnel.. until they keep trampling over it..

now im planning to use my office's paper shredder to shred some newspaper.. it seems like it will be good to let them hide/burrow/nibble/play in the section i've partitioned for them..

moral of the story: newspaper = convenient bedding + creative toys + cheap

btw, not that i'm giving them away, but i think i can confirm one of my babies is a male.. the other one keep kicking my finger away when i tried to check the genitals..

PS: my babies are starting to eat vege+pellets already, on top of mother's milk.. they are 8 days of age.. advisable?
*
no problem... my piggies last time ate vege after 4 days... thumbup.gif

oh btw im new!  biggrin.gif ive been reading the gp threads since a year ago. yesterday i finally signed up  sweat.gif

i had the most amazing gp named vico last time but he died (i left her with my parents for just 2 days and refused to eat because i wasnt the one feeding her sad.gif when i got back she was extremely weak. i quickly took her to the vet but she died halfway there. i felt so guilty i gave up on wanting anything as pets anymore.

but recently my uncle came and brought his 2 adorable gps that he had bought for about 3 weeks and they were not in good condition as i saw that their cage was dirty, wood chips were used as bedding and was given rabbit pellets, no hay, small cage, not making any sound etc. they were extremely scared even with my uncle as he never pick them up, just put the food, pet and that was it.

i was so angry i bebel2 teling him about gps and their needs and everything. he ignored me of course.

i picked them up and told him, they are mine now.  whistling.gif

so now ive been taking care of them for about a month and kind of used to having me picking them up. they even purr now! im so happy!  thumbup.gif

sorry i talk so much, im just so excited to be here hehhee
*
welcome.. take some picture of them.. and share it here

Hi Xavi5568.

Thanks for the tip. Took the photo in a temporary cage that I housed the little guy in. Actually use recycled paper bedding in the main cage.

Hi mima,

thank you for the feedback. I took my GP to0 the pet shop at tmn mega that i brought him from and they had a groomer there that confirmed it was lice eggs (is the correct term is static lice?).

She took him into the grooming room and came back later to tell me she had applied a very mild mixture of Frontline. I was really quite surprised as I thought Frontline was too strong for GPs and she said yes, but she only applied a very very small amount.  She told me to observe the GP and see if the lice eggs would fall off or not.

Am going to observe the little guy for a few days to see if there are any improvements. Have also got a tick comb to see if that helps.

May I ask where your vet is by the way?

Thanks again.
*
pls check the front page... all the information needed is at page 1.., frontline is strong... normally we jus use revolution or ivermetin.. tat also have its dosage.. it depend on ur piggy weight..

Yeah she's first timer. She's alone in the cage. Because i not very sure she's pregnant so i dint provide her anything.

big chance she is stress ... plus 1st timer.. so can't blame her but u should b able to know whether she is pregnant or not through weighing her or noticing the size of her..

Hi, I adopted two peruvians about 4 months old. They're sisters and have been together since birth. The thing is, I put a dome as a hidey house for them & the dome is big enough to fit in the both of them but they keep on fighting for the dome. What should I do? Buy another dome?
*
remove the dome... thumbup.gif whistling.gif dome jus instill timidness in them.. so in order to build confidence.. left them at the open.. lol... tat wat i do.. provide shade but not hiding place.. jus make 1 part of the cage abit dark.. it is easier for u to toilet train them anyway.. becos they tend to pee and poo at dark places..

I tried doing that last night, when they realised their hiding tunnel is missing, they wheeked the loudest that I ever heard, and hide in the dark corner all cuddled up with their chin down (seems like the sign of unhappy and frightened)... unsure.gif
'tortured' them for one hour without tunnel, then return the tunnel back...
*
dont manja them too much.. jus provide them with a shade.. not a dome.. a dome will jus encourage them to be timid..

i want to put pictures but i dont have camera maybe later i will put pictures of my cavies hehe

also, HELP!  icon_question.gif

my gp's upper front tooth patah. like only patah sebelah. the whole tooth sebelah. so it looks like she's struggling to eat, so i cut the veggies and fruit into very small cubes and she could easily eat it then. after few days i can see the gigi starts to tumbuh.  rclxms.gif

then the other gp pula broke her whole upper tooth sebelah. and just now i checked both upper teeth gone!  ohmy.gif  no wonder she's not eating her pellet. (hagen pellet)

so i cut each pellet into smaller pieces to enable her to eat them.

i think its the pellets that cause this. what do you think? pellet? lack calcium?
*
yea.. u better check ur cage.. giv them something to chew on instead.. and pls besure to give enough floor time to them, biting of the cage tell that they wanna come out and play..

Crys_Crys:

i guess u need to mix it with the normal type 1st.. normally when u wanna change the pellet , u need to mix it 1st.. let say 1:5 ratio, then 2:4... u get the idea... slowly only increase the ratio if the 1 part ratio is finished up.. if not jus maintain..

PrinceKhai:
it is advisable to used fleece as emino has said.. this is because fleece absorb pee quite well.. so ur piggy coat will not be easily soil and stained.. u need to have a toilet as well.. to toilet train them cover the toilet area.. i mean provide shade on top of it since u are using C&C , it is pretty easy to add another cube on top and cover the cube .. they will normally go do their business there.. but u still need to monitor them which corner they prefer.. once identify.. jus cover that corner and place ur toilet there.. the 1st few week wil be hard.. u need to constantly pick up their poo and place it in the toilet .. but sooner or later they will get the idea.. ** it will smell really bad if u dont change them tat is for sure... but i foresee u change ur bedding every 3-4 days .. so be prepare to have a few sets of fleeces... cleaning the pee <-- u need to have vinegar (any type) jus soak ur used fleece in vinegar for few hour and then rinse it with soap... u are all done..

*
erm.. they dont bite when u are around doesnt mean they dont bite at all.. wat cage are u using? what u put on ur base? easy said.. with a picture of ur cage setup, i believe most of us here will be able to identify the problem for u..hay also need to cut.. this is the 1st time i heard .. wat hay u feeding la? try give western timothy or bermuda grass , they are softer, or u can try oat hay, it is more fragrant so it open up their appetite..
