*
Yes, I think you should bath it now. And please let it rest for about 5 months before you breed it again. It seems stressed.
Was the male in the same cage when your GP gave birth?

Can I ask, which vet shoud I visit to neuter my guinea pigs, and how much would it cost? I stay in Puchong.

Also, if I neuter the males, will they be less aggressive around other males? I want to keep my two males together but they fight like mini pitbulls and rip the fur out of each other. Neither one retreats and I have to use a cloth to cover them before I seperate them. I tried to accustom them to each other many times, it always ends the same way.

My female guinea pig gave birth to two beautiful babies on 3rd of April. The placenta was still attached to her and I thought that she would bite it off, as she had done with her two previous births. Unfortunately, she did not.

She was still alive the next morning, but when I came home at 1 pm, she had passed away. Perhaps it was blood loss or she was too exhausted. The two babies were still huddling beside their mother. cry.gif

I wiped the babies with a damp cloth to clean their fur and kept them in a box. I gave them kangkung leaves which they ate a bit off. I read many guinea pig forums on fostering orphan guinea pigs and there was no precise answer.

Some said feed the babies with evaporated milk.
Some said DONT FEED them dairy products. Crushed pellets and green veges will do.

Due to lack of proper answers, I decided to feed them with Oxbow Young Guinea Pig Pellets. They ate them, but they seemed to be forcing themselves to eat out of hunger. I placed a teddy bear (to keep them warm) with them and they immediately huddled around it trying to look for a teat.

So, I decided to keep them with their father. The father responded well and took care of them. Sadly, the babies thought that he was their mother and tried to crawl under its belly for milk. Therefore, I bought them a can of evaporated milk. I followed a formula that was consistent throughout most forums. 1/3 milk + 2/3 warm water.

The results =

The fellow in the photo above drinks like a puppy. It gulps the milk down with gusto. It poops and pees on its own now. Its sibling however is a bit slow, and had grown a slightly thinner. I'm trying to get it to poop by wiping its butt with a warm damp cloth but it's not working.

I feed them at one hour intervals when I'm at home. Or else they'd have eat green veges and smashed carrot bits till I get home.

Amount of milk consumed during each session:
Darker coloured baby: 2ml+
Lighter coloured baby: 1.5 ml

Is there anyone here with first hand experience? I need advise from people who have raised 1 - 2 day old orphans (NOT 2 WEEKS OLD - 1 MONTH OLD), soley hand fed (NO SURROGATE). And please don't tell me to read other guinea pig forums, overseas or local. I've read them all. I a bit panicky because I don't want the two babies to die. I was a bit relieved when they responded well to the milk but I would like to know more on how to raise them. The vet in my area doesn't treat small animals so it was no help going to the vet.

So, people who've experienced this, please share your story. I'll appreciate it very much.

Thank you.

I think it is a very wise move you put them back with the father smile.gif
My previous pup was rejected from the mother before, and I follow advise from here : http://www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html

Critical care can be use in most of the situation. that is why I always have a packet with me all the time at home. and do crush the alfafa pellet and try to handfeed them.
And you need to weight them regularly to see any insignificant weight lost. they need to gain weight to survive to make sure they are eating well.
Point no 5 I do that with wet tissue. Hope this will help smile.gif

TobbyChan, thank you so much for your feedback. May I know where you bought Critical Care? I went to Petsmore but they didn't have it.

So far, the lighter coloured guinea pig is doing well. It's still drinking only 1.4ml of milk but I saw it eating the pellets (which its darker coloured sibling is not). Not sure if it's pooping yet.

Did your baby guinea pigs poop on the spot when you wiped it? Mine doesn't seem to be doing so.

I have a 2.25kg bag of Oxbow Cavy Performance: Young Guinea Pig Food to let go.

I was supposed to buy Critical Care for my newborn pups, but the shop didn't have it. So I bought it as an emergency stock. The babies didn't really like the pellets and after handfeeding them with milk, they completely stopped eating the pellets. I only used one handfull.

Bought it on the 5th April 2012. I have resealed the bag and it hasn't been open since. I'm letting it go for RM 38 along with a free heavy duty drinking nozzle (1.5L bottles).

It needs to go as soon as possible.
Please PM me for details or anything.

Thank you.

The lighter coloured baby has passed away. I found it already cold this morning. The other fella was dong so well yesterday but its health deteriorated and it's very weak now. It's drinking a lot but it's still very weak. I'm not sure if it will survive. sad.gif

Sad news. The darker coloured baby passed away last night. It had weakened after the first baby died. It drank a lot of milk (2.5ml) each time I fed it, but it couldn't lift its head. I had to hold its head up each time. It stopped eating the green veges and crushed carrots and capsicum too. ~sigh~ I dunno. Raising day old orphans aren't easy.

I'm putting this fellow up for adoption.
Interested parties please PM me in my inbox only.
There'd be an adoption fee to cover its cage, accessories and food...etc.
