U.S., Malaysian Forces Conduct Joint Aviation Exercise

By From USS Abraham Lincoln Public affairs

USS Abraham Lincoln (At Sea) (NNS) -- Aircraft from USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Carrier Strike Group participated in a joint aerial combat training exercise with the Royal Malaysian Air Force, Feb 14.

F/A-18 Hornets and Super Hornets from Carrier Air Wing (CVW)2 joined Malaysian SU-30 and FA-18D Hornets to train in multiple combat scenarios. Events ranged from single aircraft engaging single aircraft, all the way to complex multi-aircraft combat scenarios.

With the Malaysian SU-30s maneuvering at speeds estimated close to MACH 1, training was aggressive and realistic.

"Air Combat Training gives our aviators a chance to match their skills against the skills of some formidable foreign aviators and their modern aircraft. An added benefit is promoting regional partnerships and improving maritime security," said Lt. Luke Swain of CVW-2.

The United States and Malaysia share a diverse and expanding partnership and cooperate closely on a number of security matters, including counterterrorism, maritime domain awareness, and regional stability.
The Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group is currently in the U.S. 7th Fleet's area of responsibility as part of a routine deployment to promote peace, cooperation and stability in the region.

Small & Deadly

What do infantry soldiers use to close in on the enemy? Handy dandy weapons. Here's a look at the weapons used by soldiers in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF).

Bigger does not necessarily mean better, especially in close combat. That is why soldiers are equipped with a variety of small arms that are designed to be swift and deadly when they close in for the kill.

Currently, the common weapons used by various battalions in the SAF are variants of the Singapore Assault Rifle (SAR) 21, such as the sharpshooter and one with an M203 grenade launcher attached, the P226 Pistol and the Section Assault Weapon (SAW).

Termed as small arms, these weapons are highly portable and can be carried and used by one person. They also typically weigh below 5kg.

"In the infantry battalion, the three main weapons are the SAR 21, SAW and M203. As for the P226, it's used mainly by infantry units that conduct POI (Protection of Installations)," explained Master Warrant Officer (MWO) Michael Pereira, the Deputy Manager and Head Coach of the SAF Shooting Contingent, School of Infantry Weapons.

He elaborated: "When operating as a section of seven men, two men will be armed with the M203, two with the SAW, two with the normal SAR 21 and one with the SAR 21 sharpshooter."

Commenting on their effectiveness in battle, MWO Pereira said: "These small arms are very good for jungle and urban warfare because they are small, compact and user-friendly. They don't obstruct your movement, whether you're crawling behind bushes or ducking along corridors.

"Weapons with scope functions like the SAR 21 are also really simple to handle. You just need to look at the dot through the scope, then fix the dot onto the target and fire to engage the weapon."

First wave of allied assault on Libyan air defenses

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. and British ships and submarines launched the first phase of a missile assault on Libyan air defenses, firing 112 Tomahawk cruise missiles Saturday at more than 20 coastal targets to clear the way for air patrols to ground Libya's air force.

In announcing the mission during a visit to Brazil, President Barack Obama said he was reluctant to resort to force but was convinced it was necessary to save the lives of civilians. He reiterated that he would not send American ground troops to Libya.

"We cannot stand idly by when a tyrant tells his people there will be no mercy," he said in Brasilia.

It was clear the U.S. intended to limit its role in the Libya intervention, focusing first on disabling or otherwise silencing Libyan air defenses, and then leaving it to European and perhaps Arab countries to enforce a no-fly zone over the North African nation.

Navy Vice Adm. William E. Gortney, director of the Pentagon's Joint Staff, told reporters the cruise missile assault was the "leading edge" of a coalition campaign dubbed Operation Odyssey Dawn. Its aim: prevent Moammar Gadhafi's forces from inflicting more violence on civilians -- particularly in and around the rebel stronghold of Benghazi -- and degrading the Libyan military's ability to contest a no-fly zone.

A chief target of Saturday's cruise missile attack was Libya's SA-5 surface-to-air missiles, which are considered a moderate threat to some allied aircraft. Libya's overall air defenses are based on older Soviet technology but Gortney called them capable and a potential threat to allied aircraft.

Also targeted: early warning radars and unspecified communications facilities, Gortney said. The U.S. military has extensive recent experience in such combat missions; U.S. Air Force and Navy aircraft repeatedly attacked Iraq's air defenses during the 1990s while enforcing a no-fly zone over Iraq's Kurdish north.

Cruise missiles are the weapon of first choice in such campaigns; they do not put pilots at risk, and they use navigational technologies that provide good precision.

The first Tomahawk cruise missiles struck at 3 p.m. EDT, Gortney said, after a one-hour flight from the U.S. and British vessels on station in the Mediterranean.

The U.S. has at least 11 naval vessels in the Mediterranean, including three submarines, two destroyers, two amphibious warfare ships and the USS Mount Whitney, a command-and-control vessel that is the flagship of the Navy's 6th Fleet. Also in the area are Navy P-3 and EP-3 surveillance aircraft, officials said.

Gortney said it would take as long as 12 hours to assess the effectiveness of Saturday's strikes. Then a high-altitude Global Hawk unmanned surveillance plane would overfly the target areas to get a more precise view, the admiral said. He would not say how long the attacks on Libyan air defenses would last, but he stressed that Saturday's assault with cruise missiles was the first phase of a multi-stage mission.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who was scheduled to fly to Russia on Saturday afternoon to begin a week-long overseas trip, postponed his departure for 24 hours. Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell said Gates decided he should remain in Washington to monitor developments in Libya at the outset of U.S. strikes.

Gates had been skeptical of getting involved in Libya's civil war, telling Congress earlier this month that taking out Libya's air defenses was tantamount to war. Others have worried that the mission could put the U.S. on a slippery slope to deeper involvement in yet another Muslim country - on top of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hours after Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton attended an international conference in Paris that endorsed military action against Gadhafi, the U.S. and Britain kicked off their attacks.

At a news conference in Paris, Clinton said Gadhafi had left the world no choice but to intervene urgently and forcefully to protect further loss of civilian life. "We have every reason to fear that, left unchecked, Gadhafi would commit unspeakable atrocities," she told reporters.

Clinton said there was no evidence that Gadhafi's forces were respecting an alleged cease-fire they proclaimed and the time for action was now.

"Our assessment is that the aggressive action by Gadhafi's forces continues in many parts of the country," she said. "We have seen no real effort on the part of the Gadhafi forces to abide by a cease-fire."

Among the U.S. Navy ships in the Mediterranean were two guided-missile destroyers, the USS Barry and USS Stout, as well as two amphibious warships, the USS Kearsarge and USS Ponce, and a command-and-control ship, the USS Mount Whitney. The submarine USS Providence was also in the Mediterranean.

US F-15 crashes in Libya, crew safe: command

BERLIN - A US F-15 jet crashed in Libya due to a technical fault late Monday while enforcing a no-fly zone and both its crew ejected safely, the US Africa command said Tuesday.

"Two crew members ejected from their US Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle when the aircraft experienced equipment malfunction over northeast Libya, March 21, 2011 at approximately 10:30 pm CET," the command, based in the western German city of Stuttgart, said in a statement.

"Both crew members ejected and are safe...The cause of the incident is under investigation."

A command spokeswoman, Nicole Dalrymple, told AFP that the crew had sustained minor injuries and that one had been recovered while an operation to pick up the second was ongoing.

She said the crash was not a result of hostile action and an investigation to determine the cause of the malfunction was underway.

The aircraft, based out of Lakenheath, England, was flying out of Aviano air base in northeastern Italy.

Western forces pounded strongholds of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi for a third night under a UN Security Council resolution authorising all necessary means to stop Gaddafi's forces harming civilians as they battle a rebellion.

Coalition officials expressed satisfaction with progress in degrading Gaddafi's air defences.

A senior US general said the strikes begun on Saturday night could diminish but the UN-mandated no-fly zone would be extended to the whole country.

New allies join Libya offensive to show 'solidarity'

OSLO - A slew of nations have joined global powers France, Britain and the United States in an international campaign to impose a no-fly zone on Libya but with very different motives, analysts say.

Following the United Nations' Security Council Resolution 1973, Norway, Denmark, Canada and Belgium have all sent fighter jets to the Mediterrenean to cripple Moamer Kadhafi's forces which has been attacking Libyan civilians.

Denmark's NATO-enthusiastic, centre-right government wants to take a leading position in supporting the uprisings in the Arab world, they say.

Unlike its past military commitments in Afghanistan and especially in Iraq, its role in Libya has strong domestic public support.

"Denmark has been on the front line ... during all the Arab uprisings and is also there for Libya," Prime Minister Lars Loekke Rasmussen said Friday.

"We are a small country, but we have the historic responsibility to live up to our international responsibility," he told reporters shortly before the parliament voted unanimously in favour of the government's proposal to take part in the Libyan mission.

With general elections set to take place before November, the move is allowing Denmark's government to score points with the electorate - strongly in favour of the mission - and Washington, said Bjoern Moeller, a specialist of African conflicts at the Danish Institute for International Affairs.

Jan Egeland, the former head of humanitarian affairs and emergency relief at the UN who now heads up the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, agreed.

"For many years now, Denmark has had the immediate reflex to support any mission in which the United States is involved," he said.

Norway - which beat around the bush much more than its southern neighbour before also sending six F-16 fighter jets - is basing its participation in Libya much more in its "long tradition of support to the UN," Egeland added.

On Monday, Norway however said its jets would not take action as long as it was unclear who was commanding the multinational force.

The same day, Belgian fighter jets first took part in the UN-mandated operation "Odyssey Dawn", with Prime Minister Yves Leterme explaining almost simultaneously that his country was acting to "help these people gain freedom."

Canada, headed by a conservative government keen on asserting military power, has meanwhile sent six F-18 planes to a base on the Italian island of Sardinia, thousands of kilometers (miles) from its own territory.

This is fueled by Ottawa's wish to show "solidarity with its US and British allies, and by the desire to enforce the UN resolution," said Houchang Hassan-Yari, a political scientist at Canada's Royal Military College.

More inclined to follow the White House than their Liberal rivals, Stephen Harper's conservatives - who form a minority government in the House of Commons - may also not be insensitive to electoral considerations, he added.

"The events in the Arab world gave rise to euphoria in the ethnic communities in Canada," members of which "mostly vote for the centre-left," Hssan-Yari explained.

By acting in Libya, "Harper can try to rake in the political favour of those communities," he said.

The coalition can also count on Spanish, Italian and Qatari jets, which are bringing a precious Arab moral guarantee of sorts to the operation.

we probably will never know the real RCS of these planes are actually....all hush-hush....

and in all probability, the RCS are larger than that,if not how do you suppose a AEW&C aircraft can control a squad of F-22s if even they couldn't see them?

Uralvagonzavod introduce a new generation of tank T-90AM at the exhibition of arms, which will be held in Nizhny Tagil in the first half of September 2011. On it informs RIA Novosti news agency quoting the press service of the company. URA.RU agency wrote that the new model is a modified version of the tank T-90.

According to CEO UralVagonZavod Oleg Sienko, Defense declassifies new vehicle and has already consented to the passport image. At the September exhibition tank will be shown in action. Sienko also said that the tank was modified based on comments the Defense Ministry.

CEO UralVagonZavod said that at a meeting held on 8 December 2009, the military have voiced a number of criticisms of the T-90AM. In particular, they claim, to the engine, transmission, charge, and a host of other things. Now, the engine became more powerful at 130 horsepower, has changed the barrel, there was a completely different, secure machine-gun installation.
