70 Malaysian workers in Libya crying for help

PETALING JAYA: Malaysians working in Libya are in a state of anxiety as they wait to be evacuated.

“Seventy of my colleagues and I have been holed up at a base camp belonging to Amona Ranhill Consortium Sdn Bhd for the past four days,” said Sivanaesan Nadarajan, an employee at a construction firm in Tajura, 30km southeast of Tripoli.

“None of us have left the compound as the situation is unsafe. There are shootings and bombings going on everywhere,” the 39-year-old told The Star.

“We have enough food and water for now.

“But neighbouring construction sites have been burned down,” he said.

Sivanaesan and the other Malaysians are involved in the construction of the Tajura housing project there.

Most communication channels had been cut off, he said, adding that the Internet connection was not stable.

Sivanaesan said they were frustrated by the seemingly slow progress of evacuating them from Libya.

“Workers from other companies are being evacuated now. What is our embassy doing?

“When we get in touch with the embassy staff, none can tell us of any plans,” said Sivanaesan. “They merely ask us to stand by.”

Meanwhile, in KUALA LUMPUR, Deputy Foreign Minister A. Kohilan Pillay said the 190 Malaysians in Libya will be transported in stage coaches out of Tripoli and by sea to Rome.

He said the Malaysian embassy was working out the final details.

“We will be evacuating them very soon. I am standing by for updates from our ambassador there,” he told The Star.

He said evacuation by aircraft was not possible as Libya’s airspace had been restricted in light of the demonstrations there.

He said all the Malaysians, including seven students, were being evacuated from Libya’s capital Tripoli after violent clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces moved the alert level from yellow (caution) to orange (dangerous).

Between 200 and 300 people have been killed in an uprising to oust Muammar Gaddafi who has ruled the oil-rich country for four decades.

Boustead Singapore will also evacuate 31 of its Malaysian and Singaporean staff in Libya who were working on the Al-Marj township project in Tripoli, reported Bernama.

The company said in a statement that it had arranged for all its staff in other projects to be flown out of Libya on the earliest available flights.

Boustead Singapore would suspend its operations in Libya until peace was restored and the full extent of the political situation could be determined to ensure the safety of its staff.

In another development, a group of protesters held a peaceful demonstration at the Libyan embassy in Kuala Lumpur yesterday morning.

Mostly students, they burned a portrait of Gaddafi, followed by cries seeking his ouster.

The two-hour demonstration was dispersed by the police.

RMAF C-130 plane to evacuate M’sians in Libya

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government has directed a RMAF C-130 aircraft to fly home 190 Malaysians, who have appealed to be evacuated from strife-torn Libya.

National Security Council secretary Datuk Mohamed Thajudeen Abdul Wahab said on Wednesday that the plane was now in Slovakia, and would fly to Rome and then to Tripoli.

“The aircraft is waiting for permission to land from the Tripoli International Airport authorities,” he told Bernama.

Meanwhile, a RMAF spokesman said another aircraft was on standby at the Subang Air Force base, awaiting instructions to help in the evacuation of Malaysians in Libya.

Engineering crises in the Australian Navy

user posted image

The latest Navy reports show that the Australian Navy is suffering from a shortage of engineers to run and maintain its fleet. According to the November 2009 report of the Strategic Review of Naval Engineering, the navy has reached critically low levels of available engineers. The reasons for that are mainly morale problems and a failed management system.

According to the report, this is the currently the Navy’s biggest problem and it can be in no case overstated. The Navy is exposed, because of the lack of engineers and the poor engineering policy which is active at the moment. The report also shows troubling news that the Navy has failed to train its engineers to be capable of overcoming the challenges of repairing and controlling new submarines, warfare destroyers and landing helicopter dock ships.

The bigger part of the report is focused on the low qualification and lack of personnel, skills and training. These are the things that Navy should concern, because at the moment they are half-way useless. Due to the severity of this problem, the Navy has already started developing a remediation plan, which focuses on improving the management and repair of naval ships.

China’s OICW: Type 05 Strategy Rifle (ZH-05 5.8mm + 20mm)

Photos have appeared online showing a new combination rifle from China. Like the XM-29 OICW, it combines an assault rifle (chambered in China's standard 5.8mm round) with a semi-automatic 20mm airburst grenade launcher. The below weapon appears to have be built upon a Type-03 rifle.

A Russian article about the system says
QUOTE

At the heart of China's kit is a new combined assault rifle, ZH-05. It represents-automatic grenade launcher similar to the XM-29 OICW. In developing the ZH-05 provides for the conjugation of the complex with the infantryman combat systems, in particular the presence of a data channel video information with an eye on the helmet-mounted display, a soldier or a commander.

Weight of the rifle is about 5 kg, slightly less than 6.1 kg Daewoo K11 and 6.8 kg of the American XM-29. ZH-2005 allows firing with two kinds of different caliber ammunition intended for use in primary and secondary weapons systems. In the primary weapon ammo is shot with a 20-mm air fragmentation grenade explosion. In the ammunition support weapons systems include standard cartridges 5.8 mm.

The measured range-finder range to the target displayed on sight and entered automatically into the fire control system to calculate corrections for the shooting conditions and determine the number of revolutions grenades on the trajectory. Programming grenades carried in the arms, at the stage of loading, and provides an introduction to the original data and amendments issued by the ballistic computer, to solve the problem of combining non-contact point with the contour of a grenade explosion goal.

Also in the equipment includes: protective clothing with the elements of moisture and plamezaschity and NBC protection, as well as personal body armor (the basis of this subsystem is to vest and unloading of the new modification, which is hinged on personal body armor, the so-called "e-vest" - system optoelectronics and other electronic equipment as part of a personal computer, communications, interface, human-machine, satellite navigation receiver, etc.; knapsack with a capacity for drinking water as well as spare magazines for assault rifles and hand grenades).

"Manpack electronic platform, which is the foundation," heart "of the kit includes including those optoelectronic and radio equipment, are included in the e-vest." Hardware platform is built on the digital interface and has an open architecture to include, as appropriate, and new or additional samples of electronic equipment.

Judging by the photos and reports from China, this complex "digital equipment" field trials will be accepted for service in late 2011 or early 2012.

Malaysians flown out of Libya

KUALA LUMPUR: A chartered aircraft has flown 127 Malaysians out from strife-torn Libya, National Security Council secretary Datuk Mohamed Thajudeen Abdul Wahab said.

He said the Boeing 727 aircraft, carrying the Malaysians and 59 people of other nationalities, left the Tripoli international airport at about 10.30am (Malaysian time) Friday and landed in the Tunisian capital of Tunis an hour later.

It is believed that five Malaysian students opted to remain in Tripoli, the capital of Libya which is seeing an uprising against its leader, Muammar Gaddafi.

Mohamed Thajudeen said the plan was to fly the evacuated Malaysians from Tunis to Rome in a C-130 aircraft of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).

A Malaysian Airlines flight is scheduled to leave the Italian capital at 1.30pm (Malaysian time) on Friday with the evacuees.

Meanwhile, a Foreign Ministry spokesperson said the Malaysian embassy in Libya had been temporarily closed for safety reasons due to the uprising.

He said the Malaysian ambassador to Libya, Mohd Zulkephli Mohd Noor, his wife and embassy staff were among the 127 Malaysians evacuated from that country on Friday.-Bernama

Russia to start building new S-500 air defense missiles by 2014

New S-400 air defense missiles will be deployed just outside Moscow next month

Russia will start serial production of its next-generation S-500 missile system in 2014, an aerospace defense chief said on Thursday.

The S-500 air defense system will be able to track and destroy ballistic missiles with ranges of up to 3,500 kilometers.

"[The S-500] is currently in development. By 2014, it should enter into serial production," aerospace defense strategic commander Lt. Gen. Valery Ivanov said.

"This system will be able to defend territories at heights of up to 50 kilometers," he added.

Russia's aerospace defense troops currently use S-300 and S-400 systems.

New S-400 air defense missiles will be deployed at Dmitrov just outside Moscow in March, Ivanov said.

Bomb find at KLIA puts 56 flights on hold

KUALA LUMPUR: Fifty-six flights at the KL International Airport (KLIA) were delayed after a bomb, believed to be from World War II, was found at the site of the KLIA II construction site.

Workers at the site found the bomb on Monday night.

Airport services were stopped twice – from 11am to noon and 3pm to 3.30pm – to ensure the bomb was safely detonated.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha said, as a precaution, the exercise was carried out jointly between the bomb disposal squad and Malaysia Airports Bhd (MAB) security.

He said the two service interruptions were necessary as the bomb was too risky to be moved.

“It was better to detonate it.”

The first detonation affected 37 flights, while the second affected 19 arrivals and departures.

“The bomb was successfully detonated at 3.18pm,” said Sepang Acting OCPD Deputy Supt Baharuddin Mustapha.

All services at the KLIA resumed after that.

Singapore now officially operate Spyder SR to replace the Rapier system.

user posted image

The Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) will be replacing its 30-year old RAPIER air defence system with the Surface-to-air PYthon-5 and DERby – Short-Range (SPYDER-SR) ground base air defence system. The SPYDER-SR will form part of the 3rd Generation RSAF Networked Air Defence capability that builds upon the existing multi-layered air defence system to further strengthen Singapore's air defences. An all-weather air defence system, the SPYDER-SR will enhance the RSAF's capability to effectively deal with a wide spectrum of aerial threats.

The capabilities of the SPYDER-SR air defence system include:

    * Anti-aircraft and anti-missile capability. The SPYDER-SR is a quick reaction surface-to-air missile system capable of engaging a wide spectrum of aerial threats ranging from fighter aircraft, helicopters and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to precision-guided munitions. The SPYDER-SR is able to employ both the Python-5 and Derby missiles which are fitted with infrared imaging and radio frequency seekers respectively.
    * Enhanced effectiveness. Compared to the RAPIER, the SPYDER-SR possesses a longer range for interception and higher altitude. These enhanced capabilities will provide Singapore with an extended air defence envelope against aerial threats. It is also equipped with a 360 degree engagement capability and is able to engage multiple aerial targets simultaneously.
    * Enhanced awareness and responsiveness. Integrated into the RSAF’s Networked Air Defence system, the SPYDER-SR will be able to tap on a real-time integrated air picture created by the RSAF’s wide array of sensors. This gives the SPYDER-SR the ability to respond faster and engage targets with greater precision.
