Just like to know how one detect a supporting beam. Old houses do not have the structural diagram anymore..
Do contactors just use common sense? Is there a device that detect the iron rods inside the beam?

More expensive if u want to use the device or machinery like REBOUND HAMMER to detect beam rc steel..for simple method basically just measurement 10feet from fllor lever up to ceiling..distance from that normally is beam level..

jojozep, juz get a contractor and ask them, its more straight forward and you can solve your queries and worries.
If you insist to try to locate it on your own, you might able to fin them without instrument. For landed residential unit, locating a beam is quite easy, as normally the size of beam will normally bigger than the wall, so it will not flush with the wall. Or, if you are able to located the column, the beam will be sitting on the column. Or, it may be a piece/ a long stretch of concrete bellow your slab.
