Am seriously thinking of buying this from one of the Japanese online dealers.

But it's kinda expensive at RM1.4-1.5k. I'm also afraid they might be out of stock. Do Seiko models get discontinued quickly or do they have a long run? This model has been out since 2008.

Rolex used to be a very affordable watch. Was popular with British WW2 soldiers. Even normal Malaysians back in the 70s could afford one.

But with each year, the price becomes more and more grotesque.

kotmj - seeing you a lot more in this thread these days.  you ready to put a timepiece on that wrist?
it does not have to be Rolex - in fact I prefer that you don't.
Watches used to be a hobby of mine but I have found better. With bespoke clothes I get to be more involved and work with craftsmen.

I totally understand your reservations about Rolex. A Seiko Spirit would be better made. But! It's quite impossible to beat the visceral effect a Rolex has. Instant recognizability. Pure status symbol. No other brand accomplishes with such ease and immediacy and infalliability what people buy Rolexes to do: project the image of success. Notice how difficult it is to get any recognition when you wear a Blancpain Fifty Fanthoms.

The watch I really love are vintage handwind Longines from the mid 50's to early 60's. 14-18K solid gold, secondary seconds dial, acrylic crytal. But they are badly sealed, fragile watches. Such watches are very, very quaint today and is almost the equivalent of driving a vintage car instead of something more modern and utilitarian.

I don't just like good knives. I like good anything. Just bought a 14" diameter 3" thick solid end grain tembusu chopping board over the weekend. It is really terrible what people use to cut on. I don't know why people abandoned end grain wooden boards and went with white polystyrene instead. It is such a downgrade. I've used a wooden board for years and it never cracked or anything. It is such a pleasure cutting on it. (To work, it must be end grain.)

I like cast iron Cantonese woks, I like iron Lyonaise skillets, I love copper sauteuse evasees, I love my Japanese hand-forged gyuto, I like olive wood turners, I like my solid oak dining table, my solid beech desk, etc.

I put in a bid for this, not sure if I'll win. Mint, 36mm, solid 18K, Valjoux movement, from the 80's. There are better pictures, but that would make me easily identifiable on the streets so I hope you'll excuse me.

Added on August 4, 2011, 8:59 pmMost of you will never have heard of the brand, it was defunct for a long time then as is so common nowadays some entrepreneur bought the brand and revived it as a boutique brand. It used to be a mass market brand back in the 60s. No prestige whatsoever. I just like the size, the classic good looks, the solid gold, and the lack of a brand premium on the price.

Boss brought his Mark XII to the office today, had a chance to handle it and see how it fits my wrists. Surprisingly, for a 36mm watch, it was OK. Took some getting used to though as all my other watches was 40mm and above.

Feels better than the XVI, but I do miss the crisp dial and the AR coating of the XVI. Decisions decisions...

Sorry for the bad quality. Blackberries weren't known for their photography prowess heh.

I thought you were in the market for something that was instantly recognisable, easily found, demonstrated luxury and success, and would look excellent with selection of bespoke trousers, shirts, and English shoes?
I thought you were looking for .... a Rolex.

I was but I am always aiming for aspirational stuff before ending up buying down to earth stuff.

BTW Rolex projects success, not luxury. Rolex is a tool watch. Luxury would be stuff like VC, PP, etc.

Very nice Seamaster, but 45.5mm? That's like wearing an alarm clock on the wrist!
