This just arrived today (the book not the watch tongue.gif )

Great coffee table book, except I have a small and rather unused coffee table, and I don't want to get this jewel dirty!

This thing is loaded with 191 pages of content about the history of the brand, including odd items they once manufacturerd (timing tester and adjuster for torpedo firing pins?)

A must have for the Paneristi!

How is everyone doing? icon_rolleyes.gif Long time no post!

interesting..first time i read about buying watch to impress surroundings...

you're kidding right?

i would say the majority of people who buy nice watches are doing it to impress and that is precisely why there's a market for watches that are many tens of thousands of RM or more.
wishful thinking if you believe that most of these people know anything about the history, culture, inner workings, and craftsmanship of the expensive watches they purchase.

for a man, a watch and perhaps a car are the biggest icons of status, and status only means nothing if you live in an island alone with nobody in a thousand miles to see what you have.

of course not everyone will think this way, but i would say that the majority of people are purchasing to please the masses. this is why rolex can sell a million watches - its a brand everyone knows, and if you buy one, the majority of people will recognize the brand as a high luxury item. walk in a room with a thousand people, wearing a Greubel Forsey or a Grieb & Benzinger and you'd be lucky to find a single person that would recognize your watch.

I just purchased this today for my brothers birthday.

Okay, yes it is a fashion watch, and yes its quartz, and yes this brand has no basis or foundation in watchmaking.

But, it is a handsome watch that I believe will serve as a great everyday watch for my brother who doesn't even own a single watch.

I personally think that this watch is absolutely beautiful, and perhaps given the same money I would have purchased another brand for myself, I think this will be perfect for him.

RG + Black Ceramic. Hopefully he won't drop it.

It IS nice looking though, isnt it? biggrin.gif

but this is the FIRST TIME i READ someone actually saying it out openly...`I want to buy watch to impress people.  please suggest to me what brand'.. biggrin.gif

anyway, nice looking watch..as long as your bro likes it and remembers your kind gesture all the time, its worth every cents i think..

i see, sorry for my misinterpretation

i suppose you have a point. i personally would not say, "hello folks, anybody know of a watch that will get the most attention?" even if in my mind that is all i think about tongue.gif

What is your budget?

I like the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Chronograph

Reasonable price, big presence (45mm), in-house coaxial, COSC certified movement, sexy looking.

For this price range, I personally feel it is better than comparable offerings by Tag and Rolex.

My 2 cents. I bought the branded watch because I appreciate the craftmanship or the art of watch making. Of course, the watch itself must be appealed to me. Seriously, the watch more than 600 buck is jewelry itself. Just to keep time, the pasar malam quartz also can keep time. I bought those expensive watch just to impress my ownself. To impress others, well.. watch itself hardly can do that, your character does :>
*
i am honest with myself, i love my PAM, but its an expensive cover on a Valjoux 7750 movement.
i find that most people are more impressed with it than i am, and that is what i love it for. but i am strange like that.
i am less impressed by my more complicated ML pocketwatch with a much more heavily modified and complex retrograde movement. the attention to detail is finer, with exhibition caseback, cotes de geneve markings, blued steel hands, genuine silver arabic numerals, power reserve indicator, seconds subdial, and completely handwound movement with only 90k sold/year.

from a watchmaking perspective, the ML beats the Pammy everytime. in a room full of a thousand people, the PAM always wins and that's why it wins my heart over, time and time again.

does any one else agree with my honest view?

Ok yes, 7753 which i should be proud of because of the revised subdial placement from the 7750 which seems to be overly used.
but essentially the same. im sure you get my point.

Thank you for your feedback.. basically what u said very close to what i have in mind..

Personally, i do not like Maurice Lacriox... so that would not be in my list...

I did consider Ball and Hamilton before... Just the brand rather "cold" in Malaysia probably because of less advertisement? Tag probably more close to me because frenz around are using...

Last but not least, buying this watch also consider an personal upgrade for me.
Branding is consider rather important as when we meet client, we wants to projects a steady, mature and reliable person. A person that not to be taken granted easily.

Ok, my max budget is 5k. Do hope to get a decent upgrade for the hard earn money.

Tag is well known - tons of marketing, affordable quartz level products, and safe designs. It's usually my last choice for those exact reasons.
But given your criteria it seems to be the optimal choice.

You can get some IWC watches for around that range, maybe a base level Pilot or Portofino.

i got the brand new panerai for RM21.5k... judging from prices from AD in the states and even compared to prices in KL/Singapore... this seemed fair to me...
it must be said however that i bought a Rolex Ladydatejust for my wife at the same time so perhaps i could demand some discounts
icon_idea.gif

21.5k to me seems a decent figure for a "trendy" (note: i did not say classic) timepiece...
i was also in the market for an IWC Ingeniur Mission Earth at the time but the PAM was available immediately so I went ahead with it...
i am now looking for a piece for daily use and quite set on a 2nd hand omega speedmaster pro as i dont think i can afford to use the PAM for extended periods...

My previous watch was a Rado watch which dad gave to me about 10 years ago which i never really bonded with so i gave it back to him and have pretty  much used my cellphones to tell the time...until the 312 came along smile.gif
*
RM 21.5k is a good price. In the states, from an AD, you'll pay RM 22,150 at current conversion, although you can find a reputable non-AD and get it for about RM 19.5k - 20k

To many, the 312 looks like any other PAM, but the Paneristi will instantly recognize the historically accurate dial (with sub seconds placed next to the arabic 9 as opposed to eliminating it like on the PAM 177 or PAM 48) and case (curved edges) as well as the fact that it uses the P.9000 calibre which is a automatic movement completely manufactured in-house. Either you knew this already or accidently stumbled upon a jewel.

Can I ask you a favor by posting some additional pictures of the sides and back? I want to marvel at your beauty.

In return, I'll post this picture of my own PAM 250.

yes i been reading alot about various PAMS before my purchase of course...

My introduction to Panerai actually came a couple years ago when I first had a PAM104 on my wrists...that was the first PAM that I admired actually and was on my wish list for the  longest time.... further research lead me to several other models and the 312 became the Panerai with all the attributes I desired...

Date function, No cyclops on date, 1950s case, Sandwich Dial, In house movement, Sapphire Case Back, 72 hours power reserve...

Anyways here are photos i just quickly took with my point and click camera... since u used a prada bottle... ive put my PAM312 among a few of my smelly friends as well smile.gif

PS The Luminor Chrono Daylight is lovely! I have never had the chance to try one on... but its a real masculine piece for sure!! biggrin.gif

Incredible! Thank you very much.

Might I recommend this fantastic coffee table book? It talks about the history of the brand, from the first Radiomir design w/Rolex movement, to the design of the crown protector and evolution of the watch. It is a must have for the Panerai owner. I always believe in educating myself to the max about a particular brand, especially when putting in many thousands of RM into it.

You can never have too many colognes! We both share the Terre D' Hermes. I took a photo on the Prada Infusion de Homme because I thought it matched the Italian branding of the watch. It was also a good way to prop up the watch for the photoshoot.

Cost of Repairing old Rolex
Dear forummers , my late father own a Rolex ( i dont remember the model , but i remember it,s bezek is red and blue and can rotate , it is automatic) , he bought it 2nd hand from his friend in 1982 at a cost of RM600.00 . Sadly my father passed away in 1984 . My brother took the watch but he dont use it , he kept it as an heirloom . Last week i heard he got the rolex serviced at a cost of rm18 000.00 .i think what the hell to service a rolex at that price. Since he just retired recently and got a lot of gratuity money maybe it is ok for him.
i want to know is it logic , the service cost is rm 18k? . my brother told me that the model is no more in production , that,s why it it very expensive to repair
*
No, 18k for watch service does not sound right, although we have no idea when the watch was originally purchased, there really isn't any year (even a 1950's Rolex worth RM 160k) that deserves such a price tag.

Today I'm wearing a fine example from none other than Le Sentier - a Jaeger LeCoultre Master Compressor Memovox Automatique. She's wearing an accessory chocolate brown JLC Alligator Strap.

user posted image

In 1950, JLC was the first wristwatch manufacturer to incorporate a mechanical alarm into a watch (JLC Caliber 815). It was a technological feat that still remains a rare feature in today's competitive wrist watch market.
Although there are a wide variety of excellent complications that JLC has patented, the alarm feature IMO is the most unique to JLC.

It has a sonorous chime that occurs in rapid succession. Full winding can produce this sound for around 20 seconds. The sound produced by this Master Compressor is quite different from the "cricket" like sound produced in the thinner Master Control's. A pleasure to my ears each time I let her ring.

My one complaint is the awkward date adjustment, which requires that you move the hour hand back and forth between 10 and 2 to advance the date. The last date it was at was the 20th and I managed to advance it to the 6th before I gave up and left for work.

Another highlight of the Master Compressor line is the winged compression keys that put pressure (JLC calls this "supercharging") on the crowns toric gaskets. This ensures functional operation of the crowns underwater up to a depth of 100m. Bezel adjustment can also be done underwater with no risk of breaching the watches water resistance.

Powered by in-house manufactered JLC Memovox Caliber 918.

Cheers!

I though it was Vulcain? they did it in 1947.

*
I apologize - it was the first AUTOMATIC wristwatch with the alarm function and I believe the year was around 1956 (and not 1950 as previously stated).

I stand corrected. doh.gif

Also of note, when the alarm time matches the current time but the spring is not wound, the alarm bell can still be heard if you gently rock the watch back and forth.
Even normal wrist movement can trigger a quiet chime. Honestly, it can be a bit annoying, and sometimes I have to change the alarm position to disengage the bell.

About Nomos, do you know much about this brand?

A lot of people refer to the brand citing it's in-house movement.
I do know that they outsource all parts and assemble it in-house, but can this really be considered a manufacture movement?
Supposedly for every dollar spent on parts, they must spend an equal amount in manufacture cost as a matter of company principle.
The tangomat is a beautiful example of understated elegance, even if it resembles many other watches out there.

Added on July 14, 2011, 1:35 pmcan ask how much the JLC cost ?
*
wow, very ambitious!!! i like it.

Last retail on this JLC was around RM 28200

Sometimes you can get 5% or more from AD depending on model.

This is an older model I acquired some time ago (about 5 years ago?), and I believe I paid around RM 26,200 for it. Keep in mind that just a few years ago, watches were much more expensive in M'sia. Price on this model went up 27% in 5 years, but RM is so strong, less than 8% actual difference.

For example, I paid RM 24,795 for my PAM 250 in 2008 (Sincere Fine Watches @ Pavilion, KL) but due to the strong appreciation of the RM against world currencies the same model is probably around RM 25000 today, even though price has appreciated about 12% since then.

I could be wrong (I haven't actually checked the prices recently in M'sia - there are estimates based on USD prices converted back to RM) but I believe this to be correct.

JLC has an incredibly storied past. LeCoultre was and has always been a superb watch manufacture - IMO the best in the world
You can find literature discussing movements they made for Rolex, Vacheron Constantin, Audemars Piguet, Cartier, and even Patek Philippe.

It would be a great first watch.

Panerai has an equally storied past - the whole company itself nearly disappearing off the face of the planet when the Italian Navy's demand disappeared.
If it wasn't for a superstar Hollywood actor and the backing of the Vendome Group (and later Richemont S.A.), it would have only remained a story.

Omega sponsored the Olympics, and Rolex put their name on some Brit who swam the English Channel.
Tag sponsored a ton of racing events. Together they sell millions of watches a year.

Panerai will do 35-45k watches in the same time (which is about the same as Patek and AP combined). JLC about 10k more than that. Everyone is fighting for every last watch and the prices reflect it.

Unfortunately I chose the least appreciating PAM model and I will probably sell it at a RM 5300 loss to get into a Luminor 1950, which I feel, will appreciate considerably more to make up for my loss. Of course I did get to enjoy it for many years, and received countless looks, drools and accolades from many people. More attention w/the PAM than the JLC.
