Those were the days bro...

Nowadays, the set will kong the first day the warranty expires. doh.gif

Usually LCD should have better life than Plasma...but that doesn't hold true...many times we hear a lot of problems occur even with branded set.

But come on, Technology is so fast now, the current HDTV will be obsolete technology in a few years time....

A way to do is get extended warranty for whatever HDTV you chose

Just buy and enjoy the tv. So what if the tv can last for 30 yrs will you still be watching it then? Probably already upgrade many times and that old trusty tv you have would be collecting dust.

Nowaway the technology/equipment won't last like what we had before, after my 1st Philips LCD died on my after ~3 yrs of service, didn't put in high hope on they wouldlast as they promised. Do buy extended warranty to safeguard your asset.

I've got serious doubts abt Philips Brand....all of these items are Philips brand and caused my house to power trip...my HTiB survived for 2 years, Sandwich maker 1 year, Iron 1 year....quite dangerous actually especially the Iron...

My Philips Universal remote control lasted 6 month...exchange again...also 6 months.

Nowadays I stay away Philips like a plague....but maybe its just me.

All TV's are the same. It depend how much you use it and how you use it. I will say nowadays TV will be able to last at least 5 years.

Generally CRT TV more durable but it hard to say also. Recently my Panasonic CRT TV dead, use for about four years. So it also depends on your luck.

Recently bought new Phillips LCD TV, just hope it will last for at least five years sweat.gif .

TV breaking down can be a good thing. For example you bought your panel TV with 5 years warranty and after 4+ yrs it broke down beyond repair, then they have to give you a newer replacement model. smile.gif

Actually I still have 2 Philips 29" CRT up and running. One about 13 yrs old and about 10 yrs old, that was why I put my trust in Philips LCD 5 yrs ago.... and since then I never touch on Philips...

Yup, that was exactly the scenario that I was facing. LCD broke down ~3 yr with 5 yr extended warranty. I was so afraid that they could get it fixed or gave me a new replacement of 37" HD ready LCD TV as the cost was way way higher when I bought it compare to 3 yrs later sweat.gif luckily I was give $$ in return so that I can top up for a new 46" HD LCD rclxms.gif

wow.....i received great amount of response from u guys... notworthy.gif

as most of ppl comment here...i would take extended warranty...i'm planning to get LED TV....so far i'm impressed with samsung....LG also really cool...even most shop they recommend samsung brand......at first i wanna grab Panasonic cuz their are realiable brand in TV..since my current CRT is from panasonic...so far more than 4 yrs no probs.....so i tend to use this LED TV for another 5 yrs or more...i also got this info....since sharp claimed to be 1st with 4C technology....one of the guy from electronic shop told me samsung & lg already leading with 6C technology already.....samsung is a pioneer...the rest follow 'em......

sharp's panel is made from japan...so does that means it will last long for the quality?

dilemma..... hmm.gif

With all the info on hand, sometimes you also need a bit of luck on not having the equipment to break down sooner than you expected. I strongly believe that no matter which brand you choose, most if not all will most likely break down within 5 years just because the material inside just not designed to last this long... some kind of conspiracy theory I have for manufacture to push the sales...

These all sounded like b*llsh*t to me. It's like one manufacturer coming out with 3 in 1 hair shampoo and before you know it, others will try to do better by coming out with 4 in 1 or 5 in 1 shampoo.

How much you get? I wonder how they calculate.
If you don't mind, can tell which brand you bought & also your extended warranty is from manufacture or 3rd party?

They used prorate for the calculation. I got that 37" Philips 37" HD ready LCD from Singapore Besk Denki for S$4200 with additional $200+ for 5 yr extended warranty back then and I got back S$1540 voucher ($4200/60*22) for 22 months left warranty. If they gave me a brand new 37" HD ready TV only cost them <S$1k due to the market price and I also don't want a 37" LCD anymore if I can get a new unit rclxub.gif

And how I glad I have the 5 yr extended warranty icon_idea.gif For ShenHeng/SenQ, I think they have something similar but use year instead. 1st yr 90%, 2nd yr 70%, 3rd yr XX% etc...

Most of the time it based on brand, not the type. And how often you use the TV. I don't know much about LED. But between Plasma and LCD, I guess LCD will stand longer than plasma.
