You are right. Samsung Galaxy S has kind of HDMI port, but it's called as MHL.If you visit this official press release from Samsung (http://www.samsungunpacked.com/press/press1_2_detail.html), you can see MHL on Connectivity section.

MHL make it possible to charge the phone while transmitting data, in this sense it's better than HDMI. In case there's no MHL-enabled HDTV(in other words, HDMI-only HDTV) , 'MHL to HDMI' converter is available.
