the reason is obvious, FCPO is much more volatile than FKLCI by many folds.

For instance, Yesterday the CPO went down by 103 and you can either make a profit of RM 2,575 or a loss of RM 2,575 at the end of the day if you did not close your position when it starts to head south... so happen you have long the FCPO by chance or by mistake, the next day you will need to top up RM 2,575 in the worst case scenario. If you got few contract on hand, it can make you a very happy man or vice versa

By the way, there is another thread on derivative

Yes its possible, especially with recent volatility. the high and low is at least 60-100 bids a day (1bid = $25). You can either make 2k or loose 2k with 1 contract depending on the position you are holding smile.gif

currently, the maintenance margin is RM6,250 per contract. so that's the minimum amount you need to have.

FCPO = future contract for crude palm oil. this one track the price movement of palm oil

FKLI = future contract for KLCI index. this one track the movement of KLCI index

1 point movement of FCPO = RM25 (smallest tick = 1)
1 point movement for FKLI = RM50 (smallest tick = 0.5)

fcpo are affected by the data regarding export, inventories etc....it is also affected by the price of it's substitute, such as soybean oil.

fkli, well it follows klci index.

currently the margin for fcpo is RM6,250 per contract. so u need min that amount. for fkli, i'm not sure.

Futures is very easy to learn and understand. The investment amount is cheaper too unless you really have no money. So, if you can afford to invest in shares or property market, then Futures should be no problem. As for the so called 'high risk', it is actually up to the trader how much risk he is willing to take.

If you are not willing to lose more than RM500 then you must make sure you do not lose more than 10 points for FKLI (10pts x RM50) and and 20 points for FCPO (20pts x RM25).

Feel free to PM me if you are interested to open Futures account with my Company (near KLCC).

Hi, I find the gap for the FCPO is deadly. How do you handle such gaps? I also was told not to use stop loss level because the market makers will just come trigger you. Any opinions?

They are. Sometimes even putting a Stop will cause great damage. This is why most individual traders do intraday trading as they do not want to be exposed to the deadly gaps.

When you said intraday trading, do u mean get in at opening and get out before lunch, and get in again and do not leave overnight? How do you deal with the gaps?

Well intraday does not necessarily mean get in at the open and out at the close of each session. You can get in at anytime of the day of course, depending on market conditions, signals, momentum etc. Intraday means we close out the trade the same day itself and not leaving the position overnight which exposes us to the gaps the next day.

Sometimes gaps can create great opportunities for trading.

Anyone interested to trade fcpo/ fkli intraday ? Very easy. FCPO min RM7000. FKLI min RM5000. If you have more equity eg, RM20,000, can trade more contracts. If you are beginner and just want to try first can trade small points and can also do spread. to avoid risk.

My company can charge brokerage very low based on volume.

Suggest you guys to read some blogs and start following some blogs/commentary and see whether the strategies are suitable for you, whether you are a swing (position) trader/intra day trader/volatility trader. Most of the futures house offer similar yet competitive rate but their commentary and the experts behind sometimes worth few bucks more. Just my 2 cents. cheers

Of course, I have heard stories about investors making few hundred every day. The liquidity and volatility can be seen at live crude oil trades from CME. As for our local FCPO, such liquidty and volatility is not seen. I suppose you have been trading FCPO. Can you pls enlighten me further?

My Friend, FCPO we look at the 3rd month, which have the highest volume contract.
Normally speculator will not trade on the spot month, as it require delivery or receiving of the physical Crude Oil. That is why most of the FCPO traders they trade 3months ahead.

Of cos CME got more liquidity and volatility compare to Msia market. We msia market is just a peanuts compare to CME.
As for being able to make / lose a few hundred every day, my answer to you is YES. Yesterday FCPO APR15 Low at 2156, High at 2200. Is 44pts of volatility. equavalent to RM25 X 44pts = RM1100 (if you are able to enter at the high/low and exit at the low/high). But in between, if you are able to do intraday, u can aim for 10-15pts ( RM250 - RM275). If you got the right skill, you can get it daily.

Happy Trading. biggrin.gif

Yes, just started a month ago.

Do you think it can go above the 2660 area, seems to be resistance for now.

use Maybank future, few advantage: -
1, per trade com = RM7.5
2, Tc Pro platform is super stable.
3, FBR is friendly.

i used OSK, Kenanga, Phillip, HongLeong, Amfutures before, Maybank future is the best.

PS, i dont work for MAybank Futures smile.gif

I still use the Maybank broker as my secondary one so that I can use the Tc Pro charting software FOC.

many time, the whole day waiting for 1 pattern/strategy to form, but never materialize.
maybe need to have more then 1 strategy to catch some action. not jumping from one to another, just trying to use more then one ways to skin the cat. smile.gif

I know it can be frustrating. If a whole day moves
without any of the movement fitting your strategy then so be it. It doesn't have to give signals everyday, even if we are intra-day players or even if we are full time traders. It just needs to work nicely 1 or 2 times a week. It makes a good income by month end. The main thing for me is to stick with 1 single strategy and being consistent. For me it beats using many strategies but earning less. Its better to be an expert in 1 single strategy. But that's just me.
*

good advice thumbsup.gif
today FCPO move up to 3075 then pull back to 3067 then resume up, my strategy is to go long when resume up at 3072/3073. tp is 3083/3084.

i hesitated when price at that level. cry.gif

i mean..if u think fcpo price will go up for one day..u can average up the price tht u long.
if not enough margin to average up there is another way to add additional contract without top up margin but this method is very high risk la..depend ur futures dealer will gv u or not

As intraday players we strictly only trade where the market opens and closes for the day.

Vinni,
you totally do not look at past few days or weeks to get a clue for current trading day?

just 100% based on current session to make trading decision?

I have fulltime job
Fcpo only part time
My strategy doesn't need me to monitor the screen all the time

For me personally, to pull the trigger is the easiest part
The hardest part is to cut losses
And also to take profit according to my plan

You will never go wrong taking 10 points profits at a time.

SL should ideally be 10 points or less. You can start off with using 10 points SL .......but as you move into profits, say 5 points, then move the SL to BE -1 or BE. I personally move my SL to BE -1..........10 points at a time works very well.  thumbsup.gif
*
Yes, i also mostly target around 10 points. Trailing SL i still try finding a way,

TQVM for the tips bro smile.gif .

How about entry, how do u manage the signal?

That is Pro trader d,
i want to become like that also, some how still don't have the confident on my strategy yet.
how do you achieve this level of confident? do you do lots of back test ? or just start trading and gain confident eventually?

Vinni,

you are truly "Master" level d,
your weekly/daily analysis, to me is impossible for me to do.
me only "Beginner". don't have the ability and expertise to do what you are able to do.

what i currently know is some technical knowledge learn from Babypips free class,
from you-tuber : -
"Rayner Teo" (https://www.youtube.com/user/tradingwithrayner) and
"Nial Fuller" (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBCzfKEwMtphrrF8WE8HaJA)
and from some popular trading books at Amazon.com.

some great trader mention they trade based on technical alone without fundamental analysis. (don't know how true is that and is it still relevant or only applicable in limited instrument or only for certain time frame)

i am sure u know their argument that all is there to know already factor into price.

as much as possible, i want to skip the fundamental analysis part. smile.gif

Yes, i should look to trade in 1 pair first, too many pair made me blur and confuse, also some times they correlate to each other.

i use FXCM, i believe the spread is slighly higher then Dukascopy, which pair is recommended for me if i were to choose only 1 pairs first?

it is not possible for me to grab 130 pips which is nearly all the move without doing all the hard work like you do.

If i only target 30~50 pips move within the 130 pips move only by using price chart alone is it possible?

example, after a high impact data/news release, we follow the direction of move/trend, wait for pull back that is not lower then previous low, go in when the trend resume....... some variation of these kind. using 15 min chart.

Actually I too was a beginner once. Every body starts as a beginner. The thing is we must discipline ourselves to do it. It gets easier once we start doing it. No one is born an expert in anything. The only thing is that are people willing to do whats necessary? They can if they want to, but are they willing that's the question. Most are not willing to put in the effort. They want the result part but they don't want the effort part. Doesn't work that way.

You know I will agree to them that say the news & fundamental stuffs etc are built in to the price chart. I believe this 100%. Its true.
What I am saying is that when you master the sentiment analysis it lets you get on the trade much earlier than the purely technical traders. If you watched my entry you will notice that I got in at the top most edge of that hourly Pinbar. All the technical traders wait until a pattern like that Pinbar is formed first and then they will sell  at the break of that low. That's 100% textbook technical trading entry. That is good but if you have sentiment knowledge you can get in when that very edge of that Pinbar starts and can get off where the technical traders will get in. You can get in at the earliest possible timing. But as I said understanding sentiment is difficult so don't force yourself. Stick with technical trading, its the next best thing. Technical trading by using pure Price Action is the next best thing there is but using sentiment is the next level up. Its far better than price action but it demands hard work and more efforts.

Stick with what works for you.
*
good to know that some thing do works.
FX trading, Future trading is like a big ocean, i have been trying to learn from many sources and many times they not seems to working.

i nearly give up not because i have burn out my fund but because not seeing any thing works.

as time goes by, seems to have some feel that very small windows of opportunity do exist.

will explore further smile.gif

I wouldn't call it fundamental analysis actually because what I do is not fundamental analysis. It is more of a sentiment analysis, not fundamental. Fundamental analysis is for long term players like swing trading or stock trading.

This is different. We must know the sentiment or bias of a pair before we use technical analysis to enter. Its different to fundamental analysis.

The concept of sentiment is not easy to understand. The sentiment driving a pair can be very short term and change within a day or a few hours even. Or it can also be driving for an entire week or month. When you got the sentiment part down correctly, you can even take a random entry and still make money.

Ever tried fkli?
it seems a lot easier to trade than fcpo.
I have never looked at fkli in the past but over the weekend I did some analysis and I find that fkli is a lot easier, a lot more stable and a lot less riskier than fcpo.
I have taught myself to trade fkli just over the weekend  tongue.gif
it looks a lot more fun
if you find fcpo tough then fkli should be easier for you.
its just my opinion though

thanks for the suggestion bro
but as a muslim i cannot trade fkli bcos it is not shariah compliance

Ever tried fkli?
it seems a lot easier to trade than fcpo.
I have never looked at fkli in the past but over the weekend I did some analysis and I find that fkli is a lot easier, a lot more stable and a lot less riskier than fcpo.
I have taught myself to trade fkli just over the weekend  tongue.gif
it looks a lot more fun
if you find fcpo tough then fkli should be easier for you.
its just my opinion though
*
oh ya, FKLI looks easier, can try smile.gif
FKLI intraday trade normally use which time frame, 15 min chart ok?

Highly recommended "Trading in the zone"

near the end (at around 7:27:45) "setting up trading exercise" very interesting.

Use the continuous chart. In TcPro you choose "OTHER" and then choose "FCPO3". It gives you a continuous charts for up to 10 years. Other platforms I don't know.
See below attached is the yearly chart I analyzed using 10 years data till 2007. Should be enough for study purposes. Otherwise you need to get paid charting services like Chart Nexus or Bursa Station that will cost you hundreds of RM.

TCPRO for customer need pay also..

I've received quite a number of pm query about spread trading.. Let's me share with you one of the spread trading strategy that helps us to save our losing position.

Before we start, we first thanks to Bursa Malaysia that brings in calendar spread.

Now, let's assume you have a bad entry which against the market, what would you do? Cut? Hold? Average? Most of the lousy traders would choose to average whereas conservative type of trader would cut loss.

The pro-type of trader would hedge the position by entering another direction; i.e. initially you long the position, now the action is you short the position in another contract month.

Ultimately, your losing position could breakeven or even with little profit.

Apart from that, spread trading can do alot of things such as butterfly, condor, augmented butterfly, legging, bull, bear, arbitrage, cover, etc.

Yap a lot of us already know what a spread strategy is like the Iron Condor, Butterfly, etc,  etc. This is general info that is widely available on the internet. The question is how do we make use of that spread strategy to make CPO easier to trade like you mentioned earlier? Show us a working example of prices, which strategy used, how the legs are set and where and how the profit is achieved.

How exactly does it make it easier? If you are going to say general things like its a hedge, then most of us know whats a hedge too. We understand that when we hedge it controls the risk as we are long one month and short the next month contract so the loss wont be too great. The question is how exactly does this help turn a profit in CPO? Dont give general info, give specifics.  biggrin.gif
*
This is not general by the way. I've given you the hint, so is now your job to do research on it. Remember, hedge is not to control the risk, but to make profit. This is what I call the wisdom of spread trading. Want to know more? at least buy me a tea or coffee la..

That's OK, as I mentioned in the PM my current method of trading is working well for me so no interest to change it. It may be in the future that I may add spread to my portfolio just for diversity sake that's all and for that I have my fellow colleagues who trade spread as their bread and butter who are more than willing to show how they trade spreads. Right now no interest in it.  laugh.gif

how is your tick chart strategy coming along alex?  tongue.gif

Tcpro Tick chart not good, need to refresh often, else the chart not upto date.
Better stick with 15m,5m,1m chart for fcpo,

Do you know what the Sell down and Buy up represent? Is that a figure from total volume of the market? I cant find any explanation regarding this.

I intrepret it as the total volume of trader's position in any prices. From that i think i can determine the area of interest of traders in any particular price, at least i can use it as point of reference in analysis.

But i need to confirm it is as what i thought it is. Dont want to interpret it as a chicken but actually it represent a duck lol

Just pick one strategy that suits you and keep using it. Don't jump from strategy to strategy. Because the important thing is not the strategy itself but how you use it. It's the psychology part that most struggle with. Are you ready when your signal appear? That is the important thing. Most can't handle that part. One must be very aggressive in taking a shot. Otherwise hard to be a trader. Wait patiently but when Signal appear, shoot. Bang!

as much as i am a silent reader, i do enjoy your insight of your process in trading..

coincidentally with your comment about journalling, im also currently trying to figure out the format of a proper trading journal..

anyway, from your latest post, in short you do these on weekly basis:

- Trend analysis (Yearly, Monthly, Weekly, Daily) on these 5 charts FCPO, Soy oil, Crude oil, USD index and USDMYR
- Sentiment analysis (reports on the production, supply and demand)

any tips on how to do proper analysis for the reports (on sentiment analysis)?

Also I forgot to mention, the above which are done weekly is different to the JOURNAL which I wrote about earlier. That needs to be done Daily as we trade daily. The weekly analysis is part of the preparation work and is different to the Journal.

Great post, and thank you

yeah, im aware of it. basically what i know is the weekly analysis is done before making a trade, and for the journal is more like a diary of the thought process when making a trade

Anyways there was a huge gap down in the 2nd session today by 19 pts. This is why I never even hold between the 2 sessions because sometime it carries a risk like this. See the hourly chart showing the gap.

Totally agreed. smile.gif

After read from all the posting here, something that I would like to add on for related topic ...
1) Trading platform -- Currently we can trade BMD with many platform such as JTrader, TCPro, ... but not MT4/MT5.
(Lately I did come across MT5 demo account from a local broker house. It work fine and suppose to be launch soon but latest update that it put on hold by Bursa.)
2) Software charting tools -- Bursa Station is a good charting tools. It is also a good platform for data collection in which we can get intraday tick data and EOD data for all BMD products. (I think ChartNexus only have EOD. Not sure for all BMD products or not.)
3) Spread trading -- FCPO do have many (105) combinations for calendar spread trading compare to FKLI (6) pairs.
One of the difficulty to work on futures spread trading is not easy to find necessary information for study.
4) Trading records -- Thanks to Vinni on sharing this topic in detail. It is really a good practice and can help to improve our trading skill/result. Thank you.

I am using MT4 for BMD products in offline mode as charting tools for study and back test. It does not attach to any brokers and not is real time mode too.
As mentioned in my posting before, I did opened a demo MT5 account from local broker (LTIF) but they did not get the approval from Bursa to live this platform in Malaysia for BMD products. So, they on hold the implementation of this platform and withdraw the trial / demo too.

Bingo. You got that right.
But that Journal part is very crucial because that is what is going to shape you and guide you. Its more than a diary in that sense.
After the Preparation work gets you prepared, the Journal is the one that is going to hand hold you and guide you in applying what you know correctly.

Hi VinniJeyaa,

I've been studying the ITS/SGS report, i got few things that i still not quite grasp the sentiment behind it. Hope you dont mind explaining it. My questions is:

1. Where did you usually go to get the data from ITS/SGS reports? Most site i found only quoted the data from ITS/SGS report. Not the actual report it self. Is that sufficient?

2. How to correlate the past data to determine the future sentiment?
I mean, yeah, from the reports we got the figures about export whether it fell or rose by few percents, from a period of duration, compared to the previous month. So for example, the latest report said that the export of palm oil fell by 3% for the period from 1st to 21st of the month compared to previous month.
So, by that, should i assume that 3% fell of export might affect the future CPO price to fall?

Hope my question is not too silly to ask sweat.gif

2. You need to tabulate the data you collect in an Excel file to see how they all stack up with the previous month as well as from the week to week. I have attached the tabulated data below. How you interpret it will depend on your reasoning ability and logical conclusion. This cannot be taught but only practiced and improved. By watching the export data from 1-25 between Feb & Mar - you will notice that the Mar exports was decidedly lesser than the Feb but when you looked at the figures from top to bottom you will notice a steady decrease from -25.46% til the last figure of -1.15% from both ITS & SGS. This is a steady tapering until it is only about 1.15% difference. What does this logically tell you? It tells that the demand has improved to almost parity between Feb & Mar. We see this when compared between week to week from a top - down analysis. But just looking at the improved exports does not tell the whole picture. I have explained about inventory and production also in my previous posting and using proper context in interpreting the sentiment. The exports data is not to be interpreted on its own by ignoring the Production & Inventory data. Besides this there are other drivers that need to be evaluated as well i.e. USDMYR, Soy Oil ,Crude Oil etc that drives sentiment. Dont forget the Festival seasonal demand also. Not easy but it gets better with practice. You need to be able to read between the lines. This is dependent on your ability to use reasoning and logic.
*
now it solve one of my query about sentiment..

Thank you!

It's technical play.
Just like what happen for April shipments. Some players got short and didnt cover back, so they paid up.
FOB shipments May position also high. Sellers are holding on from selling. They know ppl need to buy

not possible by just looking at bmd. it's more on physical side.
comparing the spread between Apr and May now, It's about rm100.
logically, a buyer that wants oil now will try to buy May.. cuz its much much much cheaper.
the trap is, they will bring a boat calling 1-7th shipment, as long as it's in May.
If i'm the seller and i'm not covered properly, and i've sold so much Full May shipment while everyone is calling 1-7th... I'll be in trouble.
That is why some have to cover outright at the high price.

Doesn't happen much in the mkt.. this time around.. demand is quite good.
supplies are also coming up better. By right BMD should be coming down... I still don't get why the rally yesterday...

Oh! I see. Have to llok from physical point of view. Again, thanks for your valuanle input.
A spread guru did mentioned that study of COT and OI could help to see more clear about position hold by traders. But BMD seem do not provide COT info and it is not easy to just look on OI itself for conclusion.

I am very interesting in spread trading and I hope we all can learn from each other about this topic here. – Specifically FCPO calendar spread, FCPO-CS.
Here are few different approaches that I try to see and study about FCPO-CS.
1) Analyse FCPO curve chart.
2) Analyse selected pair for price charts.
3) Analyse FCPO-CS charts.
4) Analyse seasonality charts.
As you see, the above are technical base and not fundamental base due to I am not good at FA. (I also not good on sentimental analysis too.) I hope we all will make this topic progress well and learn together to master this spread trading.
There are a lot of advantage on spread trading. Please google to find what are the pros & cons of it.
As per Mr. Yong CC course title specified, “Spread Trading – The Best Kept Secret of Futures Trading”
http://www.opf.com.my/education/events/upc...rading-preview/
(As per above web info stated, there will be a preview session tomorrow morning at OPF office, KL.)
It will be good for us to get know more about this spread trading as “local” and main player are work on it.
I will come back again on this later. Your questions and/or comments are welcome. Thank you.

No one can predict this volatile FCPO . Everyone can give you an opinion, but no one will tell you what they made/ or loss.

In my opinion. FCPO is still a commodity underlying contract. You can't trade it solely based on technical. It just won't work. Fundamentals and technical plays a part in it.

I would be wrong.. but thats why i'm here to find out more about it smile.gif

Ya, I also think no one can predict, even over session /over night, things can change.
better to trade intraday within the session, follow trend and take small profit.

On technical analysis approach, I try to study chart to aim for opportunity in Calendar Spread trading by trend following trades (Price Breakout), contrarian trades (Mean Reversion), statistical seasonal trades (Seasonality Pattern).
Please try to see any opportunity from the above trading approach in the below chart?

So you are trading based on pattern i.e. flag fomation, gapping, ascending triangle etc? Are you an intraday trader?

For FCPO, is it advisable to trade short-medium term like 100-200 ticks small upleg/downleg?

Trading is very personal, for me, I prefer day trade to avoid gap across trading sessions,

It is up to individual to develop their own edge, target can be 5~10 points or can be 100~200 points.

one may develop and trade position trade or intraday trade, it depend on their own makeup.

study the market, understand it then you will know which one suite u. biggrin.gif
