you change the bridge when:
1. warp badly and cannot stand vertical with straight shape. tuning the string will pull the bridge forward, thus adjustment must be done often to keep the bridge stand vertical. can be done by player easily.
2. string height/curve/spacing not correct. this is a complex subject involve not just the bridge itself, string height has a lot to do with neck angle and fingerboard height as well. it also involve personal preferences.
3. string wearing the notches down. apart from replacing the bridge, this can be fixed by using super glue to fill up the notches, and re-cut the notches again. however, cheap steel strings that're usually high tensioned will have higher chance to wear the wood down. but i've seen cheap violins with low quality bridge lasting years with steel strings on.
mine is not really warp but just have some marks caused by the metal mute. dunno why the metal mute had some black grease.... and dont like the metal mute as it's really heavy. [ got a rubber mute (which is quite cheap around usd2) from amazon and loving it. though not as quite as the metal but it is light and doesnt hurt the bridge]
was planning to go back to my violin teacher to do it... but not sure he still remember me?

heheheh more than 1 yr didnt go for classes.
i walked in yamaha @ bdr puteri the other day, they selling the bridge at around rm6. but not sure about the quality.... saw one @ amazon [gleasel] which they claimed has adjustable legs... dunno wat it meant??
yea, the strings in my violin especially the E string is wearing the bridge down... super glue.. how to do it?? n yea, my violin is kinda cheap

but is ok for me since i still beginner n practice like few times a month only...

ok. one fine day there was a discount on this scale book:
Scale System : Scale Exercises in All Major and Minor Keys @ amazon and having a shopping binge i bought it. (and few more books i.e. beethoven & bach complete violin sonatas - hah! they are now collecting dust as it's so complex... maybe 1 day i would be able to play them)
not sure, but i thought practicing the scales could help in getting my fingers nimble... but noooOOoo i got cramps instead. perhaps it's my stiff joints... hah... signs of old age, i think...
i was so baffled when i got the book as it seriously looks so complicated with the fingering.
i saw some simple scales online and hah, it's more suitable for my standard.
so i was wondering, anyone of u practice scales... and how u decide the fingering?
lets share ur scaling (ha ha) experience, pls?
