Flying Swords of Dragon Gate (2011)

I think I'm becoming a fan of Tsui Hark again.

I was a fan when he made Zu Warriors from the Magic Mountain (1983) and in the 90s

Swordsman (1990), Chinese Ghost Story, Once Upon A Time in China, it seems he can do not wrong...

And then a horrible thing happen, it was called venturing into the American market...

He had since learned that America is NOT for everyone, and a strange thing happened, the trauma stayed with him, and most of his movie after his returned from America... was off until last years Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame (2011) and this years The Flying Swords of Dragon Gate.

The 3D depth is FANTASTIC! This is a beautiful BEAUTIFUL movie in 3D. I haven't seen 3D beautiful since Avatar!!! I watch this in Mid Valley, and have to add, some of the front speakers are not working optimally, so dialogue can be somewhat "muted".

I LOVE the weapons in this movie. Alot of it is CGI, but is a very VERY close to particle shots. Chinese martial art are separated into light and dark (assassination) and this movie touch on the dark arts like crazy and it is GREAT!!!

He can get a little over the top

The Darkest Hour (3D 2011)

First thing first, just to get this out of the way this is NO Skyline.

The characters are well flesh out. Even the @$$holey character has his redeeming moment

Emily Hirsh is a good actor and what ever character he chooses to play you always relate to him

The story line although not the most original is presented to it best

Also interesting to see that the Russian aren't the baddies (Hollywood and it's stereotype). As a matter of fact they are darn good people!!

I watched this in 3D, I am NOT impress by the 3D work

The Flying Sword of Dragon Gate run rings around this (3D wise)

Pick a Wednesday when tickets are more cost effective, give this a view!! nod.gif

Underworld 4: Awakening (2012)

Gosh, how to review this movie

In 2003, Underworld redefine the Vampire/Werewolf genre. It was lacking a better term, cool.

Fast forward to 2012 and three sequels later, I'm not so sure if that applies anymore...

Okay, let me put it this was

If you like to see Selena in long trench coat, jumping off buildings and coolly walk away, you are in luck, because she does that in spades here!!

That is the plus side

The Story line tries too hard to be too many things to too many people, in short it was Schizo...

They didn't even bother to bring Scott Speedman back, although his character exist so when ever they needed to show him they cut scenes of him from the first two movies and pasted those here, shoddy I know...

So bottom line, they wanted to squeeze out more from the franchise and decided to do it in a shocking (not in a good way) way... So me as a viewer at the end of the movie literally went, I really DON'T CARE.

Not a good sign I fear for 2012

Added on February 1, 2012, 12:48 amJourney 2 Mysterious Island (2012)

Slap based on a book on a movie and chances are I go watch it...

What happened to Brandon Fraser. The last I heard he was the one pushing for this and then The Rock is in it instead. And what is even more weird, Michael Caine is also in it!!

Josh Hutcherson is probably more concern about the Hunger games reviews compared to this

Vanessa Hudgens really...

Premise silly, if you expect a direct from book to movie, you are going to be disappointed. They even mixed in the 20000 Leagues under the Sea.

CGI is actually well done. The is actually a Birds and a Bees (literally) sequence which was enjoyable

Overall a Saturday afternoon matinee feel to it

So if you find yourself having a Saturday afternoon free..s give this a go

Have you ever asked yourself, what if Superman were never raised by Pa and Ma Kent

What if Uncle Ben never taught Peter Parker With Great Power comes Great Responsibility

Well you are in luck, this movie does JUST that

Done with handheld camera but in a good way. Security cameras are used to fill in the blank

The Flight sequence is AMAZING. It looks like it was shot practically but THAT WOULD BE impossible CGI must be somehow involved, but it looks like practical shots!! (My head is spinning, in a good way)

Go watch it, it is GREAT

I don't want to spoil anything for you

Battleship (2012)

Peter Berg (otherwise know as Dr. Billy Kronk from Chicago Hope) who also directed Runaway (which I recently just rewatched) seems to know how testosterone works. Because Battleship (I hardly believe it myself) works as a movie!!

The trailer was "blah" and have to add the movie is FAR from it.

Once the action starts, it doesn't let up

The cast was okay. Taylor Kitsch is in two big budget movie this year and both I like (I know I know John Carter bombed in the State, and have to add I enjoyed that movie). I think this guy is going somewhere.

I do have a point to pick

Do you have to be Einstein to understand the story, no! There is a beginning, a middle and end. And there is "some" logic behind it (emphasis on SOME). The actually game play of the board game was incorporated and it wasn't tacky. (I'm looking at you Mario Bros, SHAME ON YOU!! I digress)

Does this movie remind me of Transformer? When I was watching the trailer yes, and have to add, I enjoyed the effects here much MUCH more compared to Transformer 3. And it DOESN'T let up.

Do I recommend this movie? Well if you go to the movies expecting a Shakespearean experience, then you are not going to enjoy this. If you want a summer action pack movie, at this point in time, nothing beats this.

Mirror Mirror (2012)

I have to admit. I love folklore/fairy tale movies.

I cannot remember the last time I watched Ms Julia Roberts in the cinema. Her last few offerings I waited until they were available in Home Video release, and even after getting them had not gotten around to watch them...

So this came along and it is.... So So!!

I didn't think any expense was withhold making this, and as hard as they tried (Ms Julia Roberts and Mr Nathan Lane) the movie never felt more then just a *GASP* TV movie...

Like most folklore/fairy tale this movie suffers from the source material. They are usually a few paragraph or at maximum, one page long...

How do you reimagine something that had been done over and OVER again both in movies and TV (I counted at least 8 on imdb)?

The story tries too hard. It wants to please the ladies, entertain the guys (who usually in this situation gets dragged to this) and also be fresh, hip... well new!!?!

You know the saying I don't know how to be successful, but I know that pleasing everyone leads to failure??! (I'm paraphrasing) This would be an excellent example.

As for the two main lead, Lily Collins is okay and Armie Hammer (Reaper anyone?) is your typical 6' 5" American Bully who is used to getting his way...

What did work are the seven dwarfs. They are good.

Having said that, and as I had stated, this movie is So So

The Hunger Games (2012)

Okay. I didn't read the book. I didn't read up about the production of the movie in the magazines etc.

This was a very conscious decision on my part.

I didn't know what to expect and boy was I pleasantly surprise...

Story adaption, pass with flying color

Production value pass with flying color

Casting pass.

The story reminds my of ancient Rome. 90% or the population lives in poverty and to appease the masses, the power that be created gladiatorial games (hunger games)!!

On some level it also reminds my of Oscar Welles 1984...

I don't want to say too much except for, go watch it. You won't regret it.

Correct George Orwell

Unfortunately, juvenile is what most of the public wants nowadays...

So the movie companies supply that.

Brave (2012)

*La Luna short film, just when I think that there is no way they can out do Day & Night, they did...*

I've never really been a Cars fan, let alone Cars 2, they were okay, but never UP there with the best of Pixar.

Like most movies nowadays, I try to read as little as possible before I go into the cinema to watch them.

I didn't know what to expect

The FOREST scenes in here are SPECTACULAR!

If you think Disney's CGI was good in Tangled was great this RUNS RINGS AROUND THAT!!

I was enjoying the 1st Act, and then the 2nd ACT happened and that is were they lost me...

Things pickup in the 3rd ACT but the lost me at second...

Dare I say that Pixar dropped the ball in this one.... the earnings would have to answer that...

One thing I would like to add here is IS PIXAR NOW PIMPING STUDIO GHIBLI???

There is some much imagery here that is reminiscent of Ghibli's works....!!!!

Pixar put alot of work into this.

It is different

If only the pacing was... better...

Again, this is just My Two Sen...

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)

What a title, and WHAT A MOVIE!!

Timur Bekmambetov's stuff has always provided me with strangeness and wonderment.

At my age, that is rare!!

Visually interesting and they actually made the strangeness work, in accordance to the history of Abraham Lincoln!!

Wonderful. Simply wonderful

300! Eat your heart out!! (You'll understand if you watch the movie)

Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

(Production meeting)

Boss: So, what is selling now? I hear that chick flick are doing well,, and if they like it they actually would go to the cinema to watch more then once.

Underling 1: Well, the one with the sparkling vampire and mangy wolf seem to be doing well...

Underling 2: Yeah yeah...

Boss: Okay, let's make that, but because we do not have the right to that we have to call it something else. What loyalty free stuff can we use as a guise for this...?

Underling 3: Hm.... some fairy tale maybe... Cinderella?

Underling 1: There is no vampire or werewolf in that!! What about Red Riding Hood.

Underling 2: Been there, done that. Didn't sell...

Underling 3: Little Mermaid?

Underling 2: Vampire, under the sea.. with a werewolf, come on!!

Underling 3: I don't hear you with anything better!!

Underling 2: Uh, uh, I know, Beauty and The Beast!! The beast could be the werewolf.... but how to fit in the vampire...

Underling 1: They DON'T have to be vampire and werewolf exactly, one could be on the cover of GQ type, and the other.... scruffier...

Underling 2 and Underling 3 (together): Oh.....

Underling 3: I know, I know, what about Snow White. That hasn't been done to death... yet!!

Boss (who secretly always wanted to be the NEXT Walt Disney) : Approved. You, you and you (pointing and underling 1,2 and 3) go put something together along that line and make SURE we DON'T spend anything on the script and the MOVIE MUST SELL!!

And that was how Snow White and the Huntsman was made.

The sad thing is Charlize Theron was AMAZING as the wicked witch.

Too bad everything else isn't

Heheheh, luckily I didn't spend my money to watch it in cinema ... although really tempted to after watching Prometheus ... the connection being, Charlize Theron. But lack of time wrestled me away ... else, I'll be ranting like you have.  Btw, from the trailer, a scene involving a white deer in the forest reminds me of an animated film ... you know it, by Studio Ghibli ... Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke).

More like The Lion The Witch and the Wardrobe.

It BORROWED from EVERYTHING (even Lord Of The Ring.... *Groan*)

yes, I'd liked Timur's work since, Night Watch.

Sinister (2012)

Long time...

Managed to squeeze in Sinister yesterday. Sinister is... interesting.

Firstly let's talk about Ethan Hawke. He has not been in anything substantial since Daydreak!!

Credit where credit is due. The sound engineers know what they are doing. Fantastic soundscape!!! Crystal clear, atmospheric and is the spookiest aspect of the movie.

By Hollywood standards, this is not an expensive movie to make! USD 3M. And like Paranormal Activity and Sinister, it grounds the movie, making is seems more... I don't know, real!!

Spooky movie

Every time Ethan loads a new film reel, in the 8mm projector....

First two acts were good and then the ending.... loses me....

If you like Paranormal Activity and Insidious, give this a go

If you can find a cinema that is not full, so much the better!!

The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

Ah, Joss Whedon, good old Joss Whedon. It has been a good year for him!!

First he directed The Avengers and he also wrote this!!

He had actually did something almost impossible.

He made the horror movie genre, interesting again.

He basically took all forms of horror movies (slashers, gory, ghost) broke in down into it's basic component, and wrote this little movie from grounds up!!

It starts out like a typical, I Know What You Did Last Summer and ended it... well, I'm getting ahead of my self.

Joss Whedon has also got something that is almost unheard of, he is loyal.

If you see his works (TV mainly), he use alot of actor that he has fun working with

Fran Kranz (Dollhouse), Tom Lenk (buffy the Vampire Slayer), Amy Acker (Angel) all appears in this. Not many Writer/Director can claim that!! Not now anyway.

I really don't want to spoil this for you.

If you like horror, no matter which genre watch this.

You won't regret it
