Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016)

Gosh, how am I to review this...

Truth to be told, the Harry Potter books got me back into reading books...

Then the movies came about, and they were actually decent adaptation of the books!

So, in short, I read all 7 books, and have to admit, I have not read the Fantastic Beast and Where to find Them... It is a thin book...

And I understand they are making a couple of this???!!!

Let me do it this way

The Good

I am NOT a fan of Eddie Redmayne. I understand he had won awards for his works, and I cannot remember being drawn by his acting skills... Until now...

Warner, hoping for another cash cow, spared no expense, and the production is GORGEOUS!

The Bad

Because it is a Warner Production, this HAS TO take place in America... Sigh...

They even introduced an American School of magic... Groan x 2....

The Ugly

Apart from Newt Scamander (and vaguely at that) there is HARDLY any character development!!?!

This also suffers from what I call "The Hobbit Syndrome". meaning, reference material, a story does not make!!!

So, certain parts were spectacular, others...

Moana (2016)

How do I describe this movie in one word?

MASTERFUL

It is great to see Ron Clements (with Don Hall) who directed movies like movies The Little Mermaid (1989) & Aladdin (1992) back in the director chair!

Nice to see the Polynesian "myth" being used as the backdrop to this and it is used well.

Lilo and Stitch (2002) used Hawaii as the backdrop but not Polynesia myth!

Story Great.

Music Fantastic.

Casting Beautiful.

If you guys are hunting for a family outing movie, you can do no wrong with this!

May NOT be appreciated by small babies (there were a couple of them in the cinema when I watched this. There were a few wailing sessions (short [thank goodness] due to certain loud scenes) so please be advised.

Kids that are 4 yo and above should be fine.

Sword Master 三少爺的劍 (2016)

This is a "weird" movie.

Why?

Firstly, this is the only "Tsui Hark" involved movie, that got such a small cinema release over here in Malaysia!!

Second, this is a Ku Long Wu Xia novel, and his works are... hard to adapt.

He supposedly writes beautifully and hence the issue. it is very hard to translate the "romance" from book to screen!

This novel had be adapted to movie, previously, namely Death Duel (1977). The actor of this movie, Derek Yee, is now the director of the new adaptation!!! I believe the 1977 version made Derek Yee a star and he probably feels, the movie would be better so with Tsui Hark help, he decided to revision this movie.

As I said, WEIRD, and have to add, in a good way!!! laugh.gif

I have watched the 2016 adaptation, and is currently reviewing the 1977 version, right off the bat, I see the 2016 version is more edgy.

Alot of topics that were deemed to risque, are brought up in the 2016 version.

As for the casting, I have to say it is pretty good, with one proviso... Lin Gengxin who plays San Sau Yeh is a little underwhelming compared to the "bad guy" Peter Ho as Yan Shisan.

I am not saying that Lin Geng Xin is a bad actor, it is just that Yan Shi San role is very juicy and Peter Ho did a really good job!!

Please also not the middle part of the movie, covers alot of character development and back story so in term of pacing it got slow, but everything else is good!!

So, if you like Wu Xia movie, this is good!!

Sing (2016)

Why no love for this people?

Suffering from reality based singing competition (namely X-Factor & The Voice) fatigue? laugh.gif

So how is this movie?

I, like you, did not give this movie much thought.

I had a few few tickets to spare on my TGV card and I was a little free yesterday so I said, what the hey.

And I do not regret it.

Is this a dream will conquer all movie?

Yes, but it also say one should actually work hard and treat other with decency...

And I am getting a head of myself...

So, Buster Moon (voiced by Matthew McConaughey) has a dream.

He dreams of running a successful theater.

His father runs a car wash, and gave him the money (all his savings) to buy an old theater and is seems his dreams will come through...

It is just sad, that no one told him that the theater is a dying business, but he is still bitten by the bug.

He will do anything, say anything to put on one last show.

So will he succeed?

I have to admit, they got the story right, and the songs here are pretty good too!!

So if you like to be entertainment by good music and good story telling, go for this!

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)

This is what I texted my friends after watching the movie.

QUOTE
First Act: blah blah blah

Second Act: more blah blah blah

Final Act: oh my freaking god, it IS a Star Wars movie, and they squeezed all the action into the third act!!!

I don't mean to make the movie sounds like a drag, it is not.

Surprises are aplenty.

Disney has proved to the world that the standalone Star Wars movies, are GREAT!!!

Heck after this I even welcome the Han Solo stand alone movie (and I now understand what they are going to do). And on that note I even welcome Harrison Ford back in the Indiana Jones sixth installment (get the whip cracking already!!! What the heck are they waiting for)

Disney is really having an excellent year.

What the HECK did I just watch!!

Let's rewind!!?!

The Great Wall 長城 (2016)....

Okay and who is involved?

Directed by Zhang Yimou

Produced by Thomas Tull
Charles Roven
Jon Jashni
Peter Loehr

Screenplay by Carlo Bernard
Doug Miro
Tony Gilroy

Right...

Now I understand...

Alot of flak was made for making Matt Damon the star of the show...

I am actually okay with the concept of occidentals in China during the Song Dynasty.

Heck, remains of occidentals have be found in the Gobi Desert that dates back to 1800BC (Wikipedia Tarim mummies why don't you. Worst case, you learn something new)

My main concern is the inadequacies in the storyline!!!

What do I mean?

I am getting ahead of myself.

I am all for collaborating between the east and west.

I am sure alot can be learnt from each other.

Universal Pictures has a proud history.

One of the oldest surviving movie studio in the world, and it made a name for itself, by making low cost highly profitable movie.

Namely, Monster/Horror movies.

Another reason why I am attracted to this movie because of Zhang Yimou.

I love his eye for details.

To date his

Raise the Red Lantern 1991
Shanghai Triad 1995

remains my top fave Chinese movies!!

His latest offerings is too... lacking a better term, Hollywood!!

Granted it is a Hollywood movie and have to add, COME ON!!!

What to I mean?

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

I blame it on the storyline.

Too many liberties were made towards Chinese "history" to make this more enjoyable for me.

Okay, it is beautifully shot, I give is that.

As always, this is just my humble two sen

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016)

Honestly, I did not mean to go watched this in the cinema.

I went to the cinema hoping to watch something else altogether, and unfortunately, I had chosen poorly and the cinema I had patroned did not screen the movie I wanted...

Lemon, lemonade, I pick this movie... and I did not regret my decision.

All in all, it encapsulates all the Resident Evil movies quite nice. So in short, they got the "story" right.

Basically,

First act, story, story, story
Second act kill, maim destroy, zombies
Third act story, kill, maim destroy, zombies and then a little more story

In my opinion, if they had made the first one, and then a second (to introduce all the characters) and then this, it would have been a really good trilogy...

But alas....

My only criticism about this movie is that... too little horror... I think the issue lays with there is only so much "horror" one can do with the same material...

Eg.

Resident Evil (2002)
Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004)
Resident Evil: Extinction (2007)
Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010)
Resident Evil: Retribution (2012)

I still think the middle 4 movies are a little overkill

So much so, by the 5th, it was mainly kill, maim destroy, zombies!!!

Will they make another after this?

It really depends on how much this one make. If it makes a bundle, you bet your bottom dollar!!

Speaking about dollars, this is just my humble two sen.

Arrival (2016)

Yeah yeah yeah, slow poker.

I admit watching it today is like it's soooooo 2016, but I can live with that.

I cannot believe that Denis Villeneuve did a "time travel" so elegantly, it makes Christopher Nolan's Interstellar (2014) rendition looks like a sledgehammer.

Nicely done.

While the movie is about our world spiraling out of control, there is a certain stillness (Louise Banks [Amy Adam's character] Point of view).

This movie has an independent feel to it, with a budget of USD 49 million, but boy. story wise, it run rings around alot of movies with much much bigger budgets. Hats off to Ted Chiang (book author) and Eric Heisserer (screenplay writer)

It respects it's audience's intelligence.

Thank you so much for that.

I really do not want to spoil this for you.

You want smart Sci Fi, this is it ladies and gentlemen.

Mission Milano (2016)

Well, have you pretended to be something you are not and you come acrossed as not yourself?

Well, this movie suffers from that in spades...

Story predictable.

It copied from Hollywood shamelessly and unapologetically (Mission Impossible, Resident Evil, Italian Job and on and on and on and on.....

Really REALLY sad and disappointing...

Do Andy Lau and Huan Xiao Ming really need the money?

The fact that they agree to be in this means the answer is yes...

Sad...

Captain Fantastic (2016)

I confess

I do not have patience for Drama movies at this point in time.

I have too much to do, and drama movies are slow pace...

It was Chinese Net Years, and I had a little time so I gave this a go and boy am I glad I did.

Would you consider to "go back to nature" and give or receive education that emphasize independent thinking rather the reiterating what you have read...

Well, this movie actually answers that and does make very persuasive argument for the above.

In the end, the family remains a family thru strong interpersonal bonds and by Jove, it is a privilege to witness.

There is alot of... nudity in this (not sexual) so please be advised.

If you want something different, well, I would say this is VERY different.

Journey to the West: The Demons Strike Back 西遊伏妖篇 (2017)

Well, been a busy Chinese New Year, so only managed to watched this today...

I cannot say this enough, I am a big fan of Tsui Hark.

I have missed this work and to get two works of his (the other is Sword Master [2016]) so close to each other... *Bliss*

I will make this short

This is Stephen Chow's P.O.V. of the classic tale, (my louse translation) "Fighting the Bone Demon Three Times".

It really is a unique take on the story.

Also, because it is Tsui Hark, the CGI is mostly well done.

My only complain is
» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

which is surprising, because I thought that my main issue would be with Kenny Lin, for screwing Wukong up, and he did not!!

So, if you are a Tsui Hark/Stephen Chow fan, watch this.

You would anyway, whatever I had stated here.

The Girl on the Train (2016)

This is first and foremost a drama and then a thriller.

If you can get past that and with a little patience, the payback at the end is pretty good.

Rachel (played by Emily Blunt) is a wreck. And she (the actress) is brave and confident enough to appear in most of the movie without makeup. I was shock when she first appear in the movie and then it was later revealed that she is an alcoholic!

She is estrange from her ex-husband, and because of her addiction (to alcohol) she has issue connecting to... life...

I know I am not doing this movie any justice and have to add the payback at the end was actually rewarding.

Emily Blunt playes a good drunk!! laugh.gif

Split (2016)

Welcome back M. Night Shyamalan!!

Hollywood, if you are reading this, please do not give this guy a big budget, he will screw it up!!

I know James McAvoy is a pretty good actor, but this is out of this world!!!!

Okay, okay, if you watch this movie, M. Night Shyamalan + James McAvoy + Anya Taylor-Joy will GRAB YOUR ATTENTION and NOT LET GO, until the last minute of this movie!!!

It is THAT good!

And the ending!!!!!

I cannot breath. I CANNOT BREATH!!!

More!! MORE!!!!

Don't Knock Twice (2016)

What is it with the nouveau riche English?

Buying up stately mansion and how many people lives in it?

2 maximum 3!!!

And with all that dough, can they NOT AFFORD decent lighting???

What the hey!!??!!

I find this, a decent horror movie.

Something do not make sense (Like most horror, you just have to go with the flow)

My take away is, be careful whose advise you take. Understand their motives first, before you do so.

Gosh, why does DC not let the people in charge if the DC related Lego movies or the animated movie, to work on their live action and all would be right!! laugh.gif

This is a VERY enjoyable movie

The reference to ALL the previous Batman movies is mind-boggling!!

You won't understand how much I need this movie today
