I am sick...

I fear the cold... and had to wrap up like a sticky rice dumpling to go and watch

The Avengers: Age Of Ultron (2015)

Is it everything you want an Avengers movie to be?!!!

For sure and then some!!!

I watched this at 1Utama Imax 3D...

Even the first 10 minutes of the movie is worth the ticket price!!!

Action amazing

Story, strong.

Cast impeccable (Who would have thunk that Mark "milk slop" Ruffalo, makes such a fantastic Hulk!!!

(And now they are making Paul "babyface" Rudd Ant-Man!!!

I might actually watch this again and again and again...

Oh, for the important stuff, after the initial end credits, there is a mini movie, and after the end of ALL the end credits, NOTHING!!!

Just go watch this.

This is the movie to beat this year (and I have see trailers to Jurassic World [will watch this in Imax 3D as well], The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Mission Impossible 5)

This is Joss Whedon last outing as director of The Avengers.... cry.gif cry.gif cry.gif

Of there are some spooky scenes in this movie (scarier then alot of horror movies...)

Here is a thought, Joss Whedon direct a horror movie!!

Seventh Son (2014)

Why oh why oh why-o....

Why are movies like this made?!!!

If they had USD 95,000,000 to throw down the drain, throw it my way!!! laugh.gif

Why is wrong with this movie??

Let me count the ways

1) Jeff Bridges is a pretty good actor. Why is he "channeling" Sean Connery here (accent). Terrible, just TERRIBLE!! After R.I.P. and now this?? Shame on you Jeff, SHAME ON YOU!!!

2) Julianne Moore (Dragon/Witch Queen)... Really??!? Seriously????

3) Kit Harington.... He did not even GET the chance to show his abs!!! (tongue.gif Yes, ladies, I am saying this on your behalf)

4) Ben Barnes (Tom Ward) grew up as a farmer (pig feeder) but after been "procured" by Jeff Bridges (Master Gregory) he is able to easily read ancient text and scroll.... Which farmer in ancient time did THAT!!!!!

5) I know I am cheesy... But this movie TAKES the CAKE!! Talk about cheesy dialog...

And many MANY more...

Hollywood, in the future, if you have 95 million to pour down the drain, call me, okay??

The Boy Next Door (2015)

It actually started out decent. Premise was good, and the first act worked.

In the spirit of Fatal Attraction (1987)/The Hands That Rock The Cradle (1992) (eg. thriller)

And then something strange happened...

Noah Sandborn (Ryan Guzman) had to portray a "villain"...

I don't think his acting skills is there yet....

The script after the first act, was not very sure how to deliver!?!...

And that is not the good sign.

So much so that when the end credits roll, you go, meh....

Also interesting that Kristin Chenoweth took such a small role.

Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb (2014)

Let's cut through the chase, this is not a fantastic movie.

There really isn't much here that the last two installments have not done.

To top it off the reason for the movie is so weak and pointless....

Shame on you Ben Stiller, for doing this...

Also shame on Ben Kingsley for being part of this...

It was also difficult to see Robin Williams and Mickey Rooney and know this movie is their last.

R.I.P. guys.

Mortdecai (2015)

Can you try to write a clever/charming/delightful script and end up with the opposite?

The answer is yes, yes you can.

Here is a fine example, Mortdecai (2015)! It is so clever, that is is stupid, unfunny and another waste of production fund...

It is uninspired work by Johnny Depp trying his best to out Mr Bean, Mr Bean... Tedious, really...

Paul Bettany, for some odd reason tried to channel Jason Statham.

Ewan McGregor & Gwyneth Paltrow roles are superfluous...

The result, this USD 60 million movie, only made USD 7,605,668 in the States...

Sometimes, numbers do not lie.

QUOTE(r2t2 @ May 4 2015, 07:57 PM)
Joss Whedon did announced that there'll be no post-credit scene, just mid-credit ... so that fans won't be left furious after waiting for maybe 10mins+

Who knows he'll direct a sequel to Cabin in the Wood, instead of just producing it with his pal Drew Goddard.  hmm.gif

To be honest, I was underwhelmed a bit ... although the production scale of the movie is kinda bigger with globe trotting 'adventures', story-wise it's more personal, more 'down' to earth and no alien invaders this time ...

... The movie almost could be made as Iron Man 4, but since they need to 'get-rid' of the Ultron storyline before continuing to Thanos & the Infinity Gauntlets storyline, I guess it had to be one of The Avengers movie (since in the comic, the original Ant-Man, one of founding members of The Avengers, was the creator of Ultron; here it's Tony Stark).

Btw, how's the 3D effect for AoU? Many popping effects? Or just mostly perspective / layers effects?  I only watched the 2D version in cinema.

The 3D effect was good in the first part of the movie and also during the Hulk Buster sequence, otherwise, not much difference.

Mainly perspective/layers effect. Although Hawkeye arrows effects were good.

Hope this helps

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

Okay, I stealing a phrase from Ron Weasley by saying, THIS MOVIE IS MENTAL!!!!!!

I actually did not want to go see this.

I am NOT a fan of the original movie series.

Why?

It is just so... BLEAK!!!!

And By Jove, BLEAK it is...

Filming took place in Namib Desert, Namibia and Australia, so from a scenic point of view, it is breathtaking (believe it or not, it is difficult to make the desert look nice. You either have to film very early in the morning, or as the sun sets. Filming at noon, the desert look flat.) So needless to say it was probably tough making this movie.

Another trend is, the movie looks like it was film practical. (with several exceptions) which adds to it.

Charlize Theron is supposed to be one of the highly paid actors at this point in time and I feel, the success of this movie is partly due to her ability to sell her role.

As for her counterpart... Tom Hardy's Max Rockatansky, is a little... subdue...

After his bigger then life role Bane, it took a little while to get use to.

For the Monster Truck derby fans out there (whom I assume is the target audience for this movie). The pure vehicle carnage in this movie, with send even the most jaded amongst you to roller derby heaven...

So, did I like the movie...

I am of two minds.

On one hand, as a movie, I respect how much effort it must have took to get the movie done. The filmmakers dedication to the movie literally bleeds out of the movie.

On the other, it really is not my cup of tea (Fast and Furious anyone)

I will give this it, it is pure and unadulterated chaos... And there are people who would truly appreciate this.

Pitch Perfect 2 (2015)

Pitch Perfect (2012) was a sleeper hit.

It costed USD 17,000,000 to produced and made USD 64,998,368 in US alone.

Anna Kendrick was also launched into a star!

So, Universal having NO big franchise, decided to make it into a franchise!!

In 2012 with the general public salivating mesh up with Glee's popularity, it really isn't much of a wonder that the first movie made alot of money world wide!

Now, Glee has ended. Fox just announced that they are retiring the American Idol competition, will the second movie fare as well?

Apparently, yes!

The movie started with

That's it, the whole script, and that is just the first 10 minutes, the whole plot and they sang they way through to the end!!!

I KID YOU NOT!!!

If Universal think that they can make 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and have a ready audience... Well, frankly, it is like watching a 1 and a half hour MTV...

There are good points, the show is "intelligent" enough to recognize that the whole world hates America, and competing on a world platform, American might not be great!

And that is about it.

They did not even attempt to invite the audience into supporting the Barden Bellas by familiarizing the different girls to the viewing public, just alot of suggestion the Fat Amy and Bumper Allen bump ugly behind everyones' back...

So in short, this is the last Pitch Perfect I would watch...

Thanks a lot for watching, Mov_freak! I really appreciate it.  smile.gif
I didn’t have any expectation on the movie, which is why it didn’t bother me much.  tongue.gif
Plus, even from the trailers itself, it was already emphasized on the Germans, so I figured there won’t be other national team involved, so, yeah.
I did read somewhere that there’s gonna be a 3rd one coming up.  biggrin.gif

Here's another review of mine on Mad Max: Fury Road.  smile.gif

Tomorrowland (2015)

Why did I go see this?

Is it because of Clooney? (No)

Britt Robertson? (Who??)

Because it is based on a Disney park? (NO!)

I went to see this because, this is directed by... Brad Bird!!

Who is Brad Bird you ask?

ONLY the director who had made 2 out the Top 3 Pixar animation (he directed The Incredibles [2004, has it BEEN 10 years??]) and Ratatouille (2007). The Number 1 Pixar animation for me is a tie, between, Toy Story 3 (2010) and Wall-E (2008).

Brad also directed Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (2011).

This guys is GOOD!

So how is this movie?

Okay, the starting was puzzling and VERY good. Britt Robertson's character Casey Newton was properly introduced and off we go.

For a Clooney movie, he actually does not appear much (eg. less then half of the movie)

What surprised me most about the movie is... Keegan-Michael Key is in THIS!!!

Half way through the second act, will the reveal, I think Brad lost some of his audience.

Not so much the reveal is bad, it is just that he first arch was so damn strong!!!

It kind of redeem itself in the end, and as a whole, it is a pretty good movie.

One word, I have not had so much FUN since... since.... SINCE... Jumanji (1995)!!!!

Now for a word of advise. Readers, please please understand that everyone bought a ticket to go into the theater to watch a movie.

You have a right to bring you young children to the theater and a suggestion is to impress on them that they should behave and not wonder the whole cinema at top speed having loud conversation among-st themselves, reducing the enjoyment of the movie for other patrons.

Spy (2015)

laugh.gif

Definitely a Melissa McCarthy vehicle.

Jason Statham exercising his comedic muscles (his biggest wish had always been to be a comedian. Alas, his built makes casting director to pigeon hole him into action hero/bad guy roles... The injustice of it all!!! doh.gif )

A friend of mine commented after watching this movie that Jude Law should be the next James Bond!!

Speaking of James Bond, this movie SHAMELESSLY plagerised from James Bond. SHAMELESSLY. And have to add, it actually works.

The plot line is nonsensical, but then again, it is a comedy, so no one is actually keeping track... (Well, maybe me, chalk it up to my OCD...)

Because of Melissa McCarthy, fat jokes a plenty.

Morena Baccarin is in this (hubba hubba) but alas... such a small character...

Now, whilst watching the movie, I keep going, who is this? Where have I seen her before?? (Rose Byrne).

Did a quick search after the movie and.... DUH!!?! The mother from Insidious.... Kudos, she is a chameleon, she is so good at her role, you cannot remember what she was previously!!!

If you are looking for a comedy, to chill after a hard days work, ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Spy (2015).

San Andreas (2015)

Hollywood is no stranger to disaster movies.

Poseidon Adventure, Towering Inferno, Airport, Earthquake (70s)

The Poseidon, Day After Tomorrow and 2012 (00s).

Have you notice that after 2012, not so much disaster movies... Why?

Because when 2012 (the year) came and went... Nothing happened...

Feeling the pulse of movie viewing audience, Hollywood took a break from disaster movies...

Now, there is a new disaster movie...

How is this movie different from the rest?...
Well, you take all the most exciting scene from all the previous movies, and put them all in one movie!!!?!

And that is the sum of San Andreas (2015)!!

So, in short, there really isn't much that we have not seen in this movie.

Most people would probably go to see this because of... The Rock (Dwayne Johnson).

Watched this at Imax 3D.

So after Race to Witch Mountain (2009), Dwayne Johnson and Carla Gugino got married and had two children and then this movie happened.... tongue.gif

Yes, yes, it is an exciting movie.

Yes yes, in the past the black guy gets it, is slowly and surely changing to the yellow guy gets it (*groan*)...

Also, just before the end credits, I said to myself, wow, no american flag and I swear, two seconds later... AN AMERICAN FLAG!!!!! Predictable MUCH!?!!! doh.gif

On that note

Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015)

Let's talk about Leigh Whannell.

Who is Leigh Whannell?

He is the person who wrote the Insidious trilogy with James Wan.

You'll probably know him as the character Specs in the trilogy.

Now, why do I want to talk about Leigh Whannell?

I just want to reassure you Insidious Chapter 3 is in good hands.

How can it be not?

This trilogy are as much his babies as they are James Wan's!!!

First thing first, it is a prequel (it started before Insidious 1, and a few years after Elise helped the young Josh Lambert character).

The movie started out slow. Maybe a little too slow.

When we first see Elise, you know something is wrong with her...

This movie is mainly about the Brenner family.

Dermot Mulroney plays Sean Brenner (the father) and Stefanie Scott plays Quinn Brenner, his daughter who cannot wait until she is grown up and can move away. Quinn Brenner reminds me of the elder sister in Mrs Doubtfire... laugh.gif

Okay, here is the real surprise.

The cinema I was in was about 40% full.

Lots of giggling, lots of whispering...

Here is the surprise, when the scary bits happened, the GUYS screamed the loudest.

Not the "I want to scare my girlfriend kinda scream". More like "I don't believe my girlfriend is making me watch this scream"!!! laugh.gif rclxms.gif

Okay, where was I... Right, started out slow, Things pick up after the slow start and when things go bump in the night, IT DOES NOT STOP BUMPING!!! (Hence all the manly screams.... tongue.gif)

SO, it it better then the last two... I would have to say almost.

I think 1 & 2 works better because of the "power couple" Patrick Wilson & Rose Byrne. Here we only have Dermot Mulroney to hold down the fort and a little brother Tate Berney, who really does nothing.

Also nice to see how Elise, Spec and Tucker, "hooked up" tongue.gif

Leigh Whannell is not as masterful as James Wan with his beats (timing) and have to add, he is damn close!!

I do not mind it if they actually make 4. I would pay money to see it!!

GO watch this. You know you want to.

Jurassic World (2015)

Imagine, 1993, me in a dark cinema, waiting for the first frame of Jurassic Park (1993) to come on. The anticipation.

Don't get me wrong, months before the movie, I had gotten the comics, read newspaper and magazine articles to glean any information I could about the movie.

And then it happened, the movie starts... and... I was... MESMERISED!!

The Writer, director, cast and sepcial effect people DID THEY VERY BEST for the movie, and it shows.

Originally, Steven Spielberg thought he would used animatronics and stop motion for the effects. ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) managed to persuade him otherwise. They claimed they could produced a photorealistic dinosaurs on a computer and did a "scene test". Steven Spielberg was sold and CGI came of age.

The movie box office was off the chart and after this movie, Hollywood became addicted to CGI!

For about half an hour, your do not see a complete dinosaur. Just alot of innuendos.

And when they show a hear of brontosaurus... A sense of wonderment washed over me!!

The cinema was PACKED, and everyone in the cinema was sold that dinosaur could exist in real life in 1993, just like the people in the car, in the movie.!!

After 2 diminishing sequel. how does the third sequel hold up, compared with the original?

It is DARN close.

The first 45 minutes of the movie, I get the same sense of wonderment I got watching Jurassic Park, in 1993!!

The segment itself is VERY similar to the first movie, just much MUCH bigger!!!

The "amusement park" is bigger and much MUCH "better" compared with the first one!!

Everything "right" about the first movie was squeezed into the 45 minutes, and as stated about bigger. Very much so.

I thought that the character Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) was the young girl from the first movie and she had "inherit" the company InGen, but, alas, no.

I was stoke, that BD Wong is back but...

Irrfan Khan (Life of Pi (2012) fame) plays the Hammond role!!

I actually like Chris Pratt (the character Owen) here, though truth to be told, he will always be the A-Hole colleague in the movie Wanted (2008)!!

I can actually see him in the Indiana Jones role now.

So who is the baddie here?

Same as in the first movie, namely:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

Okay, do I think this is a good movie!

It is a huge movie and it will go on to make AN OBSCENE AMOUNT OF MONEY!

And what I think does not matter, because no matter what I say, you are going to go watch it anyway, right? So, go watch it.

As always.

You found an image of a VHS tape!! tongue.gif

I watched the first Jurassic Park movie and then read Michael Crichton's book (which is VERY good).

I became addicted to Michael Crichton and waited religiously for the second book.

I actually bought a hard cover Jurassic Park The Lost World book in Hong Kong.

I love the book and Steven Spielberg, basically use the title and a fraction of the book in the second movie...

Admittedly, there are WAY more action in the movie compared with the book and have to add, the book was alot more... cerebral...

The third movie were basically scenes from the first and second book, the ILM could not managed to produce because of lack of technology (CGI speaking). Namely, the flying dinosaurs Pterodactylus (commonly known as pterodactyls)

So, the third movie was a Frankenstein monster, so to speak...

If you like the 1st movie, chances are you will love the 4th...

Give it a chance, why don't you. nod.gif
