Hi,

My friend is having some back problem since 2/3 years ago and his condition getting worse day by day.
He has met a few orthopedic specialist in a different hospital in order to get different opinion and they advise him to do an operation after he did a MRI scan.

I’ve looked at his MRI scan and it looks like exactly like pictures below:

Therefore, I would appreciate if anyone knows who is the recommended / best orthopedic surgeon / specialist in KL / Selangor area so I can suggest to him.

I've made a research about this and below are a few orthopedic specialist that I found. Which one is the best and I would appreciate if you can share any good/bad experiences with them.

For lumbar disc herniation, depending on the direction of the herniation (usually posterior-laterally), a Neurosurgeon can do what is called microdiscectomy (removing the herniated disc with help of microscope)...incision is smaller, not much retraction on paraspinal muscles...outcom should be faster...i suggest go and find a neurosurgeon in KL...SJMC, damansara specialist and Sunway medical centre hv a few good neurosurgeon....

For lumbar disc herniation,
Looks like we have a doctor/someone with medical background here smile.gif. I really appreciate your opinion and advise in this. Thanks Dr. Tingginya (how high are you? tongue.gif).

Yes, you're right. It's a lumbar disc herniation or specifically problem at L4, L5 and S1 (based on the doctor report after he did an MRI scan). He also experience pain in the lower back and part of his left leg.

He is not sure about this. How to know whether he is having anterior or posterior lumbar disc herniation?

Neurosurgeon? I thought only Orthopedic Surgeon can do this.

Thanks for the suggestion about microdiscectomy.

QUOTE
microdiscectomy or microdecompression spine surgery, a small portion of the bone over the nerve root and/or disc material from under the nerve root is removed to relieve neural impingement and provide more room for the nerve to heal.

A microdiscectomy is typically performed for a herniated lumbar disc and is actually more effective for treating leg pain (also known as radiculopathy) than lower back pain.

Dear all,
Please help!
My son 15 year old has severe lower back pain for few years.
Muscle spasms, cramping, and stiffness. Pain mostly in the back and go’s down to leg(sometimes right or left)
Painful to walk or run or stand and if he seats down for long time. He always needs to crack his back to right and left to relax his back.
While cracking his back or neck bones making loud cracking sound :-(
MRI didn’t show anything orthopedist surgeon says all good. X-rays not showing anything too.
Blood test is good as well. Doctor said they don't do that kind of blood test in Malaysia that's why they post it to Australia.
We were going for acupuncture and chiro doctors to, he is still in a pain.
Please advise, any good professionals in Penang?
Thank you

Could it be due to the extra bone i.e. Transitional vertebrae at the lower back? Some doctors might overlooked this when looking at the X-Ray.

U can perform some search on the web on the transitional vertebrae and look at your own X-ray to do a quick confirmation.

Hope this helps.

I've had experience with Dr. Chan Kin Yuen. He was my surgeon when i did my ACL Reconstruction on my knee in SDMC 3 years ago. I'm comfortable with his service and work. Nice doctor and offer good advice.

My knee has fully recovered or at least 95% recovered. Reason being, i did not follow up with the physio treatments after my surgery.

Dr. Chan is specialize in sports injury.

I only did it on one knee. It cost me about RM21k then with everything included (MRI Scan, Hospitalization for 5 days etc).

Regarding the knee replacement, i've known of a relative who did hers in Sri Kota Medical Centre (SKMC) about 3 yrs ago. She ordered the 'part' from US and did the surgery in SKMC. Not sure about the cost but i'm quite sure it's not more than RM20k.

thanks for the info.
i went to Pantai KL last few week to see Dr Kok Choon Seng. He said the cost for Knee Replacement roughly RM28K for one knee. considering and comparing price of 3 years ago versus now, it should be ok?? reasonable? what do u think?
by the way, i check in SDMC website, this website published the cost of surgery also:

http://www.simedarbyhealthcare.com/medical...ement-bilateral

not sure if this cost is for current year... the single knee cost RM25K.

Heard that Dr Suresh George is more "famous" and experience in terms of knee surgery.... still considering which doctor to see.................

It's good to know you are doing your homework before deciding on your option. Frankly speaking, i'm in no position to comment which surgeon to look out for and if the cost is reasonable. You are right that over the years, the medical cost would've probably escalated to where they are now.

I believe as long as you feel comfortable and happy with the consultation session with the said surgeon, you have probably decided within yourself on who you'd place your trust on.

Good luck to whoever going for the surgery and wish him/her a speedy recovery.

I don't have any problem... But I am one of the hospital staff.

Since you are pregnant, I don't think he can do anything as there is a risk there.... You can't do any scan especially x-ray/MRI/CT Scan because of the radiation to your baby.
Anyway you can go have a try... If u really want to go, please bring along all the investigation report previously u have done such like xray, MRI, CT scan report, blood test, etc.

Now there is a technology call thermal radiofrequecy and steroid injection which help a lot people suffer from back pain. But this procedure require under Intensive Imaging that mean need radiation to do it... So pregnant mother is not allow also....
Anyway this is the procedure i have seen.... but your condition will be treated depend what the consultant decide....

Hope it helps !!!

[B]The best spine specialist I would recommend is a Neurosurgeon as they do finer, microscopic work and deal with the spine and the nerves. One of the best around is Dr Prem Pillay, who worked at the Cleveland Clinic USA and the University of Toronto-Canada and is now at Mt Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.http://www.singaporespine.org

I had an old tailbone injury two years ago which worsened when i got preganant now

I went to a chiropractic to treat it but the condition is worsening, feeling pain when standing, walking and sleeping too

Planning to see an orthopeadic surgeon to get it checked

i'm now 5 months pregnant. anyone knows anything can be done when I'm pregnant?

i had what they called disc herniation with nerve impingement on my lower back L4/L5 & L5/S1 which caused numbness to my right leg & both legs were weak.. i often "fall to one side" as and when i was walking (like suddenly no strength on my knees).. & the pain on my lower back was like sharp pinching, or more like needles poking continuously which could make your lower body numb..

also on my neck C7/T1, & i have minor scoliosis too (both of these untreated yet, trying to find better alternative rather than surgery)..

did minimally invasive surgery on my lower back last year at Pantai KL (Bangsar).. try searching for Dr. Harwant Singh.. a very good & caring doctor, well recommended.. he has good patience, listens to your problems, very good in consoling you and giving advice (just like a dad lol).. the only problem is, you need to really queue from early morning as his patients are really uncountable..

hope this helps

Hi guys, would like to shout out for my orthopaedic surgeon Dr Yong Yuan Shyh. I twisted my knee 3 weeks ago when I was playing basketball, I thought is small injury duh, till 2nd week, my swelling gone 70% but I still can't fully bend my knee lack of 30 degree.

So I went for specialist seeking for advise.
1. Dr Chan Kin Yuen, Gleneagle Ampang
2. Dr Yong Yuan Shyh, Columbia Asia Setapak

Scanned MRI, confirmed ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) torn, need reconstruction. Fee quote is 35k at Gleneagle & 30k at Columbia. Fee is not my main concern as covered under my insurance. Operating 2.5hours.

At first I have doubt whether should go on surgery as:-
1. Rehab is long 3weeks light walk (need crutches), 3 months back jogging, 6months-1year back sport
2. Pain
3. Lost 30% of stability

After seeking both doc advise, it may further damage my knee in long run so I have decided did mine on 23Dec under Dr Yong Yuan Shyh. Graft hamstring.

Today is my 4th day after surgery and I'm discharge today.
- Pain is almost none! Its KEYHOLE surgery, wound is very small.
- I can still feel my leg muscle, power.
- Hospital facility is good, Wifi is blazing fast stream Youtube Astro live feed, food is great, nurse is lenglui.

Feeling great to walk again soon & thats my experience share with u guys. Ciao!

Dear,

My friend have a same problems as well. He went for operation. But some how, now he suffer pain as well if he get tired or exercises. So he went for acupuncture to keep him relax on the back muscle and leg numbness. The doctor that he went call Dr Kevin 017-3268578. He did provide door to door services. Because he is more specialist in stroke patient recovery treatment. The Back problems will not totally cure after operation.... can try acupuncture .

Do anyone try before any Chinese traditional therapy to cure up the painful on the lower back bones? I also facing the same situation lower back pain since few years ago. I'm feeling uncomfortable if sitting too long hours and have to stress myself my back to right and left to relax my back. I did MRI and doctor advise me to have a injection 1st and if not fully cured, will be consider for surgery. I had heard many cases of surgery cases. The result seem like getting worse after surgery.

SO far I was under treatment by a Chinese sifu. I've been few times but haven't cure yet. The idea of the sifu was use a herbal and some sort of table to stress up my leg and back. Anyone want have any experience on it or have a better solution. The cost not so expensive compare to surgery.

@weizbee, if there is no broken bones or muscles pain, then better get it checked out. I did the same thing last year after injuring my knee. Chinese sifu say only need massage the foot and lossen the muscle tension...

Regret taking his advice...Went for MRI scan, found its ACL Tear.

there are few other non mainstream option which is practiced by holistic practiotioner overseas as :

1. prolotherapy
2. prolozone
3. platelet rich plasma
4. ozone discolysis
5. Cell Therapy -Mesenchymal stem Cell as ADSC (SVF) or wharton jelly stem cells.

this is regenerative medicine..the fact that it is minimally invasive (injection) means lesser risk for side effects and complication

Dear All,

May I ask if anyone has any recommended Doctors/Surgeons whom are able to perform Knee Replacement Surgery (arthroplasty) for a patient whom suffers from Osteoperosis and is 68yrs of age.

I've done some homework thus far and have found:

a) Cost is generally determined by the Type if Implant (Grade 1, 2, & 3).
b) Cost is also affected by the choice of Government Funded Hospitals (GH) or Private Clinic/Hospitals (PH).
c) Current cost for one Knee Replacement Surgery ranges from RM 18K (for GH) ~ RM 30K (for PH).

Kindly provide me with some advice/opinion as to which/where/who is best to approach for such exercise.

Thanking you all in advance for the time and effort.

Hello. I have been having back pain for few years. I found this thread and after considering the few Doctor available, I went to check with Doctor Eugene Wong of Pantai Hospital, KL. I did a MRI scan and Dr. Eugene WOng explained that i have a Intervertebral Disc Liquid (IVD) leakage. Dr. Eugene Wong suggest that I do an Injection to stop the further leaking of the IVD Liquid.

Now my consideration and concern is:-

1) The risk of doing an Injection to the area full of nerves to the bottom part of the body. Doctor Eugene Wong say the Injection is a no risk (I believe there is definitely some risk there).

2) Dr. Eugene Wong showed me a picture (as below. red circle done by me) of my MRI Scan result via the handphone though i requested to see the actual official result of the MRI scan. He say the official report is available and will be shown to me later and persist me to do the Injection. (I got my result today and he suggest me to do the injection tomorrow. I am not comfortable that Dr. Eugene Wong did not show me the original MRI Scan result. (I'm wondering if the photo of the back bone on his handphone really belongs to me.)

3) I took this MRI Scan under Insurance coverage. Dr. Eugene Wong says that i might not e able to claim my Insurance if i just did the MRI scan but did not go ahead with the treatment

So, My question is:-

1) Does anybody have treatment experience with Dr. Eugene Wong on his and how do you fare his treatment quality? Reliable and trustable?

Thank you.

On the item 3, yes the Dr is right. If there is no treatment being done, then it is considered as for investigative purposes, thus it is not claimable.

Having said that, do take a look at your policy and if there is a Pre-hospitalization (example 30 days), any bills (in your case is the MRI) within the 30 days is claimable, provided the end result is that there is a treatment to correct the medical condition.

Thus, if need be, you may seek a second opinion with another Dr (within 30 days) if you are not comfortable with the current Dr and claim it under pre-hospitalization.

The most important thing is that there must be a procedure to correct the issue for it to warrants that it is a medically necessary procedure.

On the rest of the item, I leave it to others whom are more competent to comment.

Hi, I would suggest that you go for second consultation from different doctor before taking any action. From there you will know if the doctor give you the same result/answer towards your situation. You have mentioned that you experienced some back pains, how about numbness? If it is just a normal bulging disc, no operation/injection is needed and you may improve your condition by physio/chiro/exercise. There are some risks for lumbar injection however, it is relatively rare.

For insurance coverage, you need to get admitted in order to claim for your MRI scan, unless you take the treatment from the same doctor.

Hope this help you.

Hi, All,

I have a herniated disc at L4/L5 which is similar to the 1st MRI shown in this forum but without any pain except some muscles pull at the back.

After reading the forum and recommendation of Orthopeadic surgeon.

I have visited few consultants highlighted here (1 from Tung Shin and 2 from Pantai) and noticed that most of the surgeon is not very professional and some are giving outdated proposal and only tell you 1 suggestion which you need to take. They will not tell you all the options available and only confine to what they use to do on their daily routine.

As example,

Most of us aware that Herniation disc will cause stenosis which may resulted a back pain, numbness and uncontrol urine/past motion.

The method of treatment may include Steriod injection, Mirodiscertomy, fusion titanium bracket, Diam silicone and titanium coflex spacer clip....etc. (check the internet).

Meaning that, if the Dr specialise on Injection then they will ask you to go for injection and will not tell you other option like why you dont need a microdiscertomy/or a spacer..etc. Likewise, those who specialise on surgery will not propose Injection because they are not doing this scope of work.

In conclusion, you must check all the pro and con from the internet and get ready the questions before you going to see them.

As to date which had visited 3 consultants , I have yet to get the same proposal from them. This make me very confuse which treatment to be adopted.

Still searching for a good consultant. Any recommendation?

Cheers

CoralChong,

I advice you to take the MRI scan for better understanding.

Wertlee,

Please seek other consultation and check the internet on risk for ESI before a decision made.

I think you can go Mon-FRi from 8.30am till 12. He starts seeing patients at 10. Go early. His clinic is on the 1st floor of KPJ.
He sorted my trigger finger problem for me as well.

If youre unsure of the location just ask customer service which floor smile.gif

No surgery. I was told to try physio first. I admit lah i'm damn lazy and kiam siap to pay for physio. So i just did some strengthening exercises. Pain went away on and off and then one day it got so painful, and I couldn't sleep for a week.

So I knew I had no choice but to crawl back. So I got he steroid shot.

I suffered back pain about 1 week and done MRI after seek for specialist at Thompson KD.
Came out results with this. Hell ...
I'm having spinal stenosis between my C5 and C6 (as picture shown).
It had block my nerves and caused numbness and pain on my left upper arm.

I'm now researching and getting advise to proceed physiotherapy or surgery.
But pain in the night during sleep is really suffering.

My friend's advise is physiotherapy since some risk is there with surgery.
Myself had arranged for physiotherapy. And meantime will survey around for better options.
Or recommended, experience surgeon.

I hope someone may give me some guide on this.
Thx in advance.

Latest update.
Done get consultation from Dr Siow from Sime Darby Medical Centre.
He said my case is not so serious. No surgery is required. Only if I insist.
If pain is disturb and I cannot stay with it, injection of steroids will be the choice.
So he issues some pain killer and supplement for my nerve.
About few days on the medication, I was able to sleep now.

Meantime, I'm getting chiropractic treatment too.
2 treatment done so far, it helps to reduce numbness and pain too.

Pain and numbness will return when I sit or sleep for certain time.
So i just need to move around and do some straightening.

I will update my condition week or month later, if I remember the tread. tongue.gif

I have been suffering lower back / lumber pain for about 4-5 years now.

Any recommendation for lower back pain specialist ? I cannot walk for 3-5 hours and need to lie down often.

If travelling and walk for 10 hours, even rest overnight in hotel room, next day sure pain.

Normal day to day, still able to sleep fine no issues.

Bending over and washing dishes over the sink also get some mild pain sensation

My GP will write a referral letter to an orthopaedic specialist. Any recommendation around PJ/Subang Jaya/Sunway, or is this list from 1st post still valid ?
