If the hole is because some1 is cut the ceiling to do something above the ceiling, normally the cut out pcs are still around, so what you need to do is, just get any ceiling aluminium bar or pcs of wood, which longer then the hole, place the bar or wood at the center of hole and screw to fix it on the hole, then take the cut out pcs of ceiling to screw on the wood or bar to close up most of the hole, then doing plaster to fill up the cut out area.
Not sure you can have clear view on what i said or not.
