Being a RPG player since the days of FF1, the basic RPG with a very basic turn base battle system.
I did enjoy it very much during that time, albeit my understanding of Jap at that time is zero.

But over the years, RPGs has evolved into something new, complicated story, complicated battle, beautiful CGs & etc
which I find myself attracted lesser & lesser to them, bought, played for a while, bored & sold them off.
Now I'm getting lesser faiths in RPGs, especially the JRPGs.

So let's share what annoys you the most in RPGs

Non-linearity, hate games that's not linear, even JRPGs like Saga series.

I voted the endless maze - not knowing where to go, especially in the dark, go round and round and ended where it begins.. its a super waste of time.

furthermore if no save points in the maze i will go crazy.

Its a nice voting list you have, in fact i feel like all of them drive me away from JRPG.

I was quite disappointed with the FF13's battle system. It's almost as if the game play itself.

I don't really mind linear story line but for a rpg (depending on the gameplay), non-consequential action kinda reduces the desire of replaying the game again. Which pretty much covers most jrpg.

Unlike Mass Effect series, every action has its consequence Gender you chose, people you make friends & enemies with, & etc...

I already have Mass Effect 2 on my PC & I still will get on PS3 & replay again, creating multiple scenario for later Mass Effect 3.

Actually what I dislike most about JRPG which is not listed.. is the random monster... I hate very much. I cannot see and they force me into this stupid battle.. But luckily nowadays dun have liao..

Anyway, The complexity is really one thing.. Sometime, you wan to see all of the side story in the game oso hard.. You have to trigger this trigger that.. And its not even easy to find.. Must see luck oso.. and run here and there like tales of vesperia.. but, luck is really random.. so i practically hate random-ess in a game... tats why i like persona 3 and 4..

Then now, I find one annoying thing in gaming.. literally all of it.. Its the trophy and the award points... Its really some motivation to let player go on.. but, for people who are not as dedicated or not so much time then is really a pain... Some is just stupid and tedious to get.. Dun get oso ok.. But that feeling of incompleteness is really bugging tat time..

Nevertheless, I will still play RPG.. Game that does not require me to think and no moral story, is abit too boring.. and game that got not that many extravagant cutscenes doesn't excite me..

1) Art Direction. Call me biased towards Asian aesthetics but this is one of the reasons why jRPG > wRPG . You get these bright colorful worlds and well "colorful" characters in jRPGs as compared to what i consider generic looking worlds/characters in wRPGs . A good example is Fallout 3 / NV , i simply could not stand the art direction in that game.

2) Storyline . Cliched plots are fine. Every game essentially is a cliche of one another and this is unavoidable. What turns me off is a stupid story which makes no sense . Personally i play a game for its story first and gameplay second.

3) Characters . Annoying characters . I have no idea what is it with jRPGs but for some reason or another they have to include some annoying character in the game. More often then not its always some child character.

4) Gameplay - All i can say is lol @ FF13. All style and no substance.

lol TS the vote only allow to pick one, While I have so many to say. I don't mind the linearity, I don't mind grinding, I don't mind uber-boss, I don't mind cutscenes(they are beautiful).

What I have a problem with is when the story drag on with unrelevant stuff. When the main story quest feels like a side quest to you. There is a big problem right there.

To be fair for Fallout 3, post-apocalyptic nuclear war country isn't exactly smurf land. But I do agree with you on the generic characters & lacking personality.

I was expecting New Vegas to be some sort of futuristic post apocalyptic nuclear world. Golden age 60's of America set in the future isn't cut out for me.

Well that's wRPG for you. Its either post apocalyptic war or ancient medieval time.

well, that's the differences between the west & east lor...

east already used to anime style, they can't get used to western style of realistic "ugly" characters
same thing with the west, they can't get used to underage kids with huge eyes, spiky hair waving huge sword saving the world with loli and a 40" D cup bombshell laugh.gif

Well, since I basically grew up playing both west & east RPGs, so I dun hav issues with the character/world designs

anyway, wRPGs not only post apocalyptic war or ancient medieval time lar...
KOTOR and Mass Effects are futuristic mah, and since most of the wRPGs are based on D&D style, hence mostly are ancient medieval or fantasy themed wink.gif

Fortunately for Bioware, they manage to break out from that mold. Then we have Deus Ex game coming up soon...that's about it really for wRPG...I can't think of anything else other than those...

I see some guys dun mind uber hard boss

for me, uber hard boss in jRPG is one of the major turn off,
after days of grinding to level max already to challenge the boss, then only kena wipe out in a few seconds doh.gif
if didn't kena wipe out then you need hours just to defeat that boss yawn.gif

good examples are the Ultima weapons from the FF doh.gif

and Western games are more grounded in reality or established legends or logical future. While JRPGs like to create their own world settings.

I do find myself a bit tired from the many similar settings of WRPG. the only one that is keeping me going is Bioware. Where their story is consistently interesting.

FF7 is completely opposite. After couple of battles, Sepiroth. Finally, last ultimate battle. Sufficient items, weapon & materias readied. Battle will be tough! Focus! Battle begins! Omni slash option appeared. Good advantage, nice. Prep up for Knights of the Round, but then Sephiroth defeated. Showing ending clip & roll credits...

Wait what? Did the game just end? Oh for god sake! after all those trouble, that's it?!

It was a complete bummer. That was the most unrewarding experience I have ever had. doh.gif

FF12 is good. thumbup.gif

Yeah, this was back when Square's English translation was still iffy. Remember the opening bombing mission? While fighting the scorpion boss, Cloud tells Barret "Attack while its tail is up! It's gonna counterattack with with its laser!" Then you attack it, then... doh.gif

I played the PC version and not the PS1 version. But I did buy the game guide for PS1. Under "Limit Break", it says that one of Barret's Level 3 Limit Break is Ungarmax. When I played the PC version, it says Angermax instead. I thought Ungarmax sounds cooler, then I thought again, maybe the translater did mean to say "anger" instead. The PC version was ported and cleaned up by Eidos and not Square themselves.

maybe Angermax is the actual english word translated to japanese & retranslated again to engrish. Probably sounded like "yu ga ru ma tsu" or something.

Unfortunately my ps1 copy has bug in it that made any one char attacks from 4 to 2 figure damage made permanent through the entire game. 1st time was Barret then 2nd time playing was Red.

FF X isn't any better too. Chars spoke in english, but I have the gut feeling that's suppose to mean something else. Long pauses with lips still moving. Maybe made sense in japanese.

Jeng jeng jeng... it becomes a thread bout what is it that you dislike in FF series as a RPG... what is the worst, and what is the best.. give example.. lol....

but i have to agree eternal sonata is just bad...

FFXIII is not that interesting... but not too shabby...

but, for those who dislike side quest, i thought rpg is about that.. oh no.. FFIX no side quest and previous squaresoft product too.. and they are still interesting.. hmm...still i never encounter games where the main plot is too side quest like except for WRPG... They are never ending quest that always look important.. And i hate it..

well, there aren't many new games out there which you grind high high and still can't defeat boss... the only jrpg that i encounter which has an overall challenging boss fight is Sora no kiseki... because when reach a level, the cp point is only 1 to 5 points so its pointless to grind anymore and you have to give up and go for boss battle...the developer make sure that that level you are at is few level away from the boss and the boss's hp is seriously crazy.. their ultimate attack is super powerful also.. one hit then if not careful whole team bye bye... Those accessories that you get can't even save you most of the time.. those battle are never easy.. but, if you have tons of potion then it may save you after a few tries.. with this the developer make sure you feel challenged... so, most of the boss battle are hard.. one wrong move... and you game over.... but, it do gives high satisfaction..

FFXIII is what i dislike about RPG's, boring/unexplainable storyline, okay battle system, overall boring RPG. My dead cat have more character than Lighting, who is supposedly the female Cloud...on the other hand, cloud is sissy. I'll take Cid Highwind to a party anytime!

I can live with horrible dubs, useless characters, "kill the rats in the sewer for experiences" missions, and such but damn it, I play most of my RPG as how I read a book. I need to know the ending.

The last thing I need in life is another book/story with no ending and I will have to wait for the second episode or DLC to know what happens in the end. Especially the fact that some good games never managed to get the second episode finished (company merged/bankrupt/etc).

RPG has been one of my favorite gaming genres.

While I'm enjoying Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy and others, there's also factors that stopped me playing them. For me it's the level grinding -- it wasted my precious times.

even though I really enjoyed the games features, I can't spend much time going through the games with skill training and such, making me to switch to Sims and fighting games.

I wish RPGs these days would be more realistic. Recently started playing FFXIII, I hate the fact when I had to fight my way through all the monsters to reach my destination but wrong place so had to turn back to fight all the monsters again ! Sick of tired of grinding and farming CPs. Wish the battles would be more realistic.

Western RPGs? Best things ever.
JRPGs? Everything. Worst things ever.

Generally Japanese games and Anime imo have annoying characters, out of place stories, pretty bad English dubbing and script that makes me cringe.
Only JRPG I like is Kingdom Hearts, can't wait for KH3 to come out on the PS3.

some western RPG make you cringe too la.. Mass effect sex scene makes me look away... Its very bad and so freaking awkward leh.. And most of the colour in WRPG are very dark.. Its depressing sometimes..

Although they are very very creative in plots, they really done great job on that.. I love their wicked and smart plots or dialogues..But I can't help but to feel they are kind of uptight and stiff.. If you are influenced by western culture you won't feel anything, but they really lacks the warmth and emotions be it negative or positive, subtle or strong... that I can somehow find in JRPG.. whereby many probably can't feel or think its too fake...

Yea, their stories are weird but not out of place.. It just give you allot of after thought... And you need to piece things together using your imaginations... Well, dun tell me KH character is not annoying? Lol.. Sora, is not really my favorite... tongue.gif

By the way, by the sound of it just how long have you not been playing JRPG not counting KH:BBS? Lol.. And the statement is abit bias..Not all JRPG are like tat la.. Take Nier for example, you can criticize about anything you want, but the story has hidden message everywhere and the VA is superb. Characters are unique too. Just depends on whether you want to acknowledge it or not.. While FFXIII is about friends and things, of courses there are annoying people in a group sometimes, not all agree to what ones says unless they are convinced...

Yea, I know, you guys probably says it cliche la this and that, like so pro like that.. But actually, its the basic of human life we always forget.. Oh well, probably pointless to say anything about morality of a story so on and so forth here cuz most people here are hardcore, love allot of action and stuff.. but of course not every jrpg are good la.. so is wrpg...

Bottom line, they both has their own flaws and merits.. But, no random fights.. I do not like that... Grinding part.. Just have to make sure I am not doing that when I am pressured.. So, I play a few games at a time.. WRPG for quick game fix and JRPG when I am free on weekends.. Take it slow and enjoy the game... laugh.gif

i love some jrpg like final fantay 10, it has an compelling story and awesome cg , but in the current console i think jrpg has degraded into some sh$% ass anime crap. for example FF13 ,great battle system++++ .....thats all the positive i can point out for ff 13, others are crap especially the characters and their dialog zzzz take snow for example zzzz.... Snow:Since when do heroes need plan WTF......Fallout is awesome . i want awesome combat , a more mature story(im hoping final fantasy 13 versus will do this), no anime like characters example from FF13(Hope, Snow and Vanille).

omg random enemy encounter*rages* that's stopping me replaying FFVIII and FFXI, altho they're my favourites in the final fantasy series.

the persona series anyone?
strangely it's the most anime-ish jrpg I've ever played, but it made me look out for RPGs again in general, simply because they're so hilarious (minus grinding, but hey they made me interested enough to overlook that). the final fantasy series stopped being fun starting at FFX because....I can see their faces and they stopped being wacky. oh and i fell asleep after an hour of playing so yeah.

clearly i don't mind unrealistic jrpgs

characters - i just dont like characters who are too heroic, too goody two shoes type that unfazed with unreasonable bad people. make me hate those characters more that the bad guy. dunno why. i think they're stupid. oh and another types is stupid. stupid heroes also turn me off. i guess that's why very good characters also turn me off

yeah... hated those type of characters as well... they are kinda stereotyped into JRPG already
that's why now I'm more into western RPG where you're the hero's personalities, and you control the outcome by your own action thumbup.gif

I would say poor battle system's the main downer for me. Ever tried the nonsensical Agarest series' battles? Being forced to 'die' in order to store up enough 'ooomph' to ohko many of the bosses just isn't fun, despite whatever effort that they have put in ramping up its production values.

Too much unnecessary walking. Long stretches of nothing? - FF13
Bad/shallow dialogue script - FF13
Annoying voice.... Vanille (more of a personal preference really) - FF13
