QUOTE(DuFfz @ Dec 31 2010, 08:22 PM) Here.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yue_Chinese QUOTE Relation to Classical Chinese Since the pronunciation of all modern varieties of Chinese are different from Old Chinese or Middle Chinese, characters that once rhymed in poetry may no longer do so today. Some linguists agree to some extent that Cantonese is closer to classical Chinese in its pronunciation and some grammar.[8] Many poems that don't rhyme in Mandarin, do so in Cantonese.[8] Cantonese retains a flavour of archaic and ancient Chinese and this has been used to study ancient Chinese culture.[8] |

QUOTE(xDarkKnightx @ Dec 31 2010, 08:27 PM) Exact explanation.http://forum.wordreference.com/showthread.php?t=166674 QUOTE Yes but what people say is that Cantonese is a more conservative language, it preserves more of the phonology of Classical Chinese (I don't know about the grammar) than Mandarin does. For example, Cantonese preserves the original 4 Classical Chinese tones, even splitting Classical Chinese Tones 1, 2, 3 into two tones each (Yin and Yang), and Tone 4 into 3 tones. Mandarin lost Tone 4 but split Tone 1, so that it still has 4 tones in total. So some of the tones of Classical Chinese won't match up in Mandarin while they will in Cantonese. Mandarin, unlike most southern Chinese languages, lost the final consonants in Classical Chinese. (Reminds me of how French lost the final syllable off most Latin words while other Romance languages keep them to some degree). So there are many more homophones in Mandarin that would really diverge from the original pronunciation of the poem. Also, Mandarin, like French, has palatized many initial consonants, g --> j, k --> chi, s --> sh, and simplified others (ng, m --> w), plus Mandarin does the Basque/Castilian initial f --> h shift, again changing the sound relative to Classical Chinese. |

QUOTE(DuFfz @ Dec 31 2010, 08:31 PM) Of course.Cantonese is mostly spoken in HK, Macau, certain parts of Guangdong and certain parts of Guangxi. Remember, HK was under British rule until 1997 (from 18xx to 1997), meaning changes in China do not apply to HK. Even now, it is a SAR of China. Besides Hakka, Cantonese is also one of the best sounding Chinese dialects, unlike Hokkien.

Swear words sound cooler in Cantonese. Also, Cantonese has a wider repertoire of swear words. You can even mix and match.
"Niamah ge chau hai. Mmmm chat gee ni *** ham kar chan zou mat lan chat kau yeh ga!" Awesome. |

Because Chinese Education system (SJKC) is standardized in MandarinAnd if you speak (hakka/canto/hokkien/mandarin) fluently And your corresponded speaks the same language fluently why speak in another language (BM)? Now that they don't want to, it's just that there is no need to. They speak in the (mother-tougue) language they are comfortable with. For the same reason, why are you replying in English in this forum? (Please don't say it's an English Forum) |

It is because in Malaysia, not every Chinese learn mandarin, those went to malay school can't speak fluent mandarin. While those went to chinese school know both mandarin and cantonese (most only in KL and Ipoh).
We chinese friends hang out, when there's a group of chinese school and malay school educated chinese, normally we choose to speak cantonese because all also know cantonese, but not all know mandarin. But when I hang out with chinese school friends, I don't speak cantonese, I prefer mandarin. Mandarin tone sounds better to me. This post has been edited by la bella: Nov 29 2012, 10:10 AM |

QUOTE(t3arsCulprit @ Nov 29 2012, 11:43 AM) Bungkus in Cantonese or Mandarin is not Da Pao.. Bungkus in cantonese should be Ngoi Dai 外带 or Correct 1 is Ngoi Mai or Wai Mai in Mandarin.. Da Pao is packing/managing the dead body I guess.. XD Hong Kong people call it Dai Zau 带走。 If you say Da Pao in Hong Kong, they curse you like hell cos it means bungkus dead body. QUOTE(bb100 @ Nov 29 2012, 10:27 AM) Of course not. Check this out:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baiyue The Cantonese and Hokkien people are more related with Vietnamese. Therefore, cantonese language sound very Viet-sounding. Mandarin on the other hand is a beautiful language with real touch of literature standard level. |

QUOTE(replicator @ Nov 29 2012, 11:36 AM) I want to learn Chinese language. Which one should I go for? Both?Actually u should start mandarin first then cantonese if you are not native speaker of cantonese.Written cantonese is hardly taught in Malaysia and usually just follows the standart chinese form.Cantonese or Mandarin? So jelly when seeing Indian also can speak Chinese. I was like IMHO Cantonese outside of hong kong is almost exclusively spoken only.Once you master mandarin it shouldn't be too hard learn a bit of written cantonese(which is almost the same as standard chinese with quite a few extra words). |

QUOTE(Meis @ Nov 29 2012, 02:38 PM) Mandarin = commie, no freedom Is this some kind of lousy joke? Cantonese is widely spoken in the Guang Dong area of China, and the people there supported CCP deeply. In fact, chairman Mao was from Hunan, southern China. Cantonese = FOR FREEDOM & DEMOCRACY!!! & they like Dr. Sun Yat-sen (founder of Taiwan) now you know why Southern China like HK love Cantonese Language has nothing to do with political affiliation. It's a fact that Cantonese and Hokkien sound like Vietnamese while Mandarin that the northerners speak is more beautiful. Mandarin language was influenced by the Manchu language due to Manchu Qing dynasty. |

QUOTE(la bella @ Nov 29 2012, 03:37 PM) But not all hongkies hate this words, but you better dont say 'Da Bao' as 'take away' food in HK. They prefer 帶走'Dai Zau' or 拎走 'Ling Zau'. How long di no go HK?what "dai zau" or "ling zau" you made them up? they will ask "lek zau" take-away or "noi-sek" eat-in Now they use "hang kai" eg: tong nai cha, hang kai! (or lek zau). teh-ais, tapao/jalan-jalan btw: gua go HK twice a month okay,. |
