A 1602 Dutch engraving (entitled “Triumphal procession near the city of Patani”) of the entourage of Patani’s famed Raja Hijau (1584-1616). The Queen rides a decoratively harnessed elephant, accompanied by her maids-in-waiting (and plausibly her sisters, the future Rajas Biru and Ungu) on other elephants. Noblemen accompany the entourage, which has its full complement of Malay palace guards and soldiers in Portuguese-supplied helmets and battle gear. According to the original German and Latin text, two elephants in the vanguard carry armaments in honour of the late King and Raja Hijau’s father, Sultan Bahadur Shah @ Sultan Mansur Shah.

Bedil merujuk kepada semua jenis senjata api Melayu daripada yang kecil seperti pemuras sehingga kepada meriam agung.

Orang-orang Melayu telah pun mengetahui ilmu bedil hasil dari hubungan dengan pedagang China, India dan juga Timur Tengah. Orang-orang Islam yang mengerjakan haji sudah pastinya terdedah kepada senjata api orang-orang Turki dan India. Pengetahuan mengenai senjata api ini bukan sahaja mengenai penggunaannya tetapi turut merangkumi mengenai cara membuatnya.

Bukti mengenai kemahiran orang-orang Melayu menghasilkan senjata api diakui berdasarkan surat orang Portugis yang menyatakan terdapat lebih 8,000 meriam pelbagai laras digunakan ketika mempertahankan Melaka pada 1511.

The Meriam Penggawa is always wrapped in yellow cloth. The notoriety of Meriam Penggawa is that it would explode or fire by itself when a calamity is about to befall the Selangor Royal Family thus it is uniquely covered with the royal-coloured cloth to prevent from blasting on its own.

The cannon was found at the edge of Sungai Buluh (Buluh River) 12km to the south of Kuala Selangor on September 23, 1966, in the burial grounds of 3 Sultans of Selangor. Its original name is Petoi Boga, which means White Princess.
