And I think you can always lower the brightness of the LCD TV

Sure you can lower the brightness but would the picture quality be still as nice? My advise is, take your Dad to the shop that have both. Get him to watch Plasma solid (don't take eyes off it) for 10 minutes. Then immediately get him to watch the same program on LCD. If no complain, then nothing to worry about.

That's what I hear people say... ironically you are attracted by the LCD brightness in the stores but when you reach home you tune down the brightness

Something doesn't click here yet people don't understand why or bother to find out

Ha. Good point. I think when they got their LCD back home, their old parent's eye can not "tahan" the intense harsh light. Guess who get to make the final call......turn that damn thing down!

If you watch movie or video rather than PC content, which I assume old people do, then plasma is better for their eyes as it is naturally softer and not as glaring, with better motion easier on those aged eyes

Problem is stores usually have bright lights that washes out the plasma but yes, you should bring them there to have a feel

Why they need bright lights in stores? Same reason why vegetable stores or any retail stores attract customers with bright focused lightings. The human eye is more sensitive to luma, like moths attracted to light

I have the same issue, still using the old astro and have no plan to upgrade to byond. Currently using 29 inch CRT. Want to buy a new and big TV with good picture quality and low power consumption - mainly use to watch astro more than 5 hours a day . People told me that plasma use power 2 times more than LCD, is that true?

My consideration list so far;
42 inch LG D460 LCD
40 inch samsung 5 LCD
42 inch X model panasonic plasma

TRUE. Rule of thumb is CCFL LCD is 1/2 of Plasma power consumption, LED LCD is 1/2 of CCFL LCD. But 1/2 now is not the same as 1/2 5 years ago when plasma uses 600W.

Having said that, 50" plasma is now about 300W with power consumption varies depending on content while LCD generally is constant.

On average people calculate u save around US$25-40 a year on electricity bill, but I think probably less.

Yea the brightness of the LCD does attract you to the TV in the shops,but I bought an LCD anyway I think when I reduce the contrast,it's less glaring,but the picture is still nice Is there something wrong with tuning down the contrast?

Our eyes look at RELATIVE and is not so good on absolutes. Turning down contrast (which controls brightness levels) with no change in the brightness setting (which controls dark levels) will give less pop to the picture. And our ability to see relative is only about 1000 ANSI contrast I read, but adjusted by ambient light conditions. So higher ANSI contrast is still better unless u have a perfectly dark room. Our eyes are not that fantastic as marketing materials want you to believe eg infinite contrast

That's why LCD looks good with high brightness even though black levels are not as good. The high contrast (and of course "vibrant" colors) makes it look good.

Same reason why there is a black border around TVs or projector screens so your eyes anchor on the black borders and things look darker RELATIVELY in the TV screen. A bad idea to go "borderless" IMHO.

But if I do find my LCD TV too glaring,is it ok if I lower down the contrast or brightness?It will only make it look less nice right?No other problem?

If you wanted the best go for Plasma but you need place your Plasma far from window or source of lights.

While for LCD, Samsung is good enough.

You should consider other brand as well. Phillips or Sony though it bit pricey.

But many people say Plasma is old technology going out of business so not worth buying. High power consumption. This not good, that not good.

For me, I likes oldies and anything cheap but good

Yes you have to tune down the LCD brightness at home. Guess what brightness my LCD monitor Dell IPS is. 10. Yes only 10 out of 100. It's really too bright if i put it at factory default 50.

IMHO, if one finds glare a problem then you REALLY should do yourself a big favor and go check out the Plasma. In comparison to LED or even the LCD, Plasma are super gentle on the eyes. Trust me on this because I have super sensitive eyes.
