Pls throw DVD player into tong sampah and buy a Media player like WDTV Live etc. DVD cannot play HD. End of story.

A media player can play downloaded HD files from hard disks or from your server, or even stream internet content. BD players are needed to play BD disc obviously, and it's quiet cheap now...RM399 can get.

So instead of buying Blu-Ray player, get a HD media player instead?I bought a new TV recently,Full HD,it came with free Blu-Ray player, but I didn't want the player so that the TV price is reduced.

And I'm wondering what does BD player stands for?Blu-Ray player? Why the 'D'? blush.gif

I think it was a free Sony Blu-Ray I think,it was the promotion by Sony,RM2499 40'' Sony FHD TV with free Blu-Ray Player,I said I didn't want the Blu-Ray player cos that time I was thinking,I never use Blu-Ray before nor do I buy the BD movies,it's so expensive. So they reduce to RM1999.Worth it?Or wrong decision? sweat.gif

Rm299,that's not as expensive as I thought!I was thinking it was around RM400 or something,I might consider buying it thumbup.gif

Other than playing movies in HD 1080p,the WDTV also got other features right?

Yes, the only thing it can't play basicaly is RMVB files. Unless you're HK TVB Drama whore, you probably won't miss it. We want HD mkv files, not pariah sub-standard RMVB file....smile.gif

Just remember to buy a branded media player...IMO, don't buy China brand....most don't have good firmware support. WDTV Live is one of the best bang for buck BRANDED HD media player right now...cheap and good....i have 2 in the house.

And you can even connect a keyboard to it to login to Facebook.

This is what I had been advised.

If you are a collector of original Bluray disc, then buy a Bluray player.

If you only wanted to watch movies and do it cheaply, then buy a Media Player.

If you wanted a cheap media player that works 95% of the time, get a branded one like WDTV etc for +/-RM300. The other 5% of the time, be prepared to say *&^*^% and curse.

If you wanted a higher ended media that works 99% of the time, get a Dune or something similar for about <RM1K.

China brand? hmm.gif For an extra RM100,I think it's more worth it to invest in Western Digital

But hey I do watch HK TVB drama sometimes laugh.gif And yea probably won't buy China stuff,Western Digital is more reliable,it's a big name

So,the most important thing is that this WDTV Live can play normal DVD movies too right?Like those you buy from those pasar malam sellers laugh.gif And also movies that you download from the net and burn to DVD,you get what I mean laugh.gif

99.99% of media player DON'T PLAY DISCs anymore. (unless you maybe add an external DVD or BD drive). You dun burn to DVD...you copy it to ur external hard disk and cucuk in the USB port. If you have a PC media server, you still can watch RMVB files by transcoding on ur server and stream it to the WDTV Live (which has built in LAN port, very important) and support optional WIFI dongle.

...but let's not confuse you with that...for time being, just copy the files to ur external hard disk and cucuk inside the WDTV Live.

You need to buy external DVD-ROM to play disc on WDTV (correct me if 'm wrong), if you want mediaplayer+bluray-rom please look for DUNE.

No dvd menus though, it just plays the movie straight away
Only wdtv live plus does that
Or just get Dune(all in one one mediaplayer + bluray )
there's also Popcorn Hour C200, but a little more expensive than dune

Latest firmware support DVD menu, but zoom option is not available. If DVD content is 16:9, you need to use TV remote to zoom it.

Oh,my bad doh.gif I didn't realize that.Actually what I'm doing now is I download movie from the net, burn it into an empty DVD,and then play it on my current DVD player.

So instead of buying this WDTV,wouldn't it be better if I buy a DVD player that can play HD?Oh wait,DVD players can't play HD stuff laugh.gif

So best would be to buy this WDTV and get an external DVD drive for it?I still want to play DVD's too of course

now you already have a HD lcd. just get a media player and test with some 720p and 1080p movies/video clips on your lcd. if you can't see the difference, then just stay with 720p HDTV. no need to waste money if 720p is good enough for you.

Just rip DVD collection to your HDD, no need to use physical disc anymore. No more hassle. Your downloaded movie can store directly inside your HDD.

As time goes by, you will need more & more storage for your collection tongue.gif

Like some had said, just go get a Dune Prime or MAX that play almost all movies files downloaded, play DVD and play Bluray. But will cost you a bit of money.....but then, it's best hassle free way of enjoying movies.

It's only hassle for the first time. Then, it's convenient.

Any ext HDD with USB interface can be use. But you'll find that 120GB is not enough if you're into HD movies.
Normal mkv 720p movie size is 4.4GB, 1080p=9GB, BDMV/ISO=40GB++ sweat.gif

@bigbangformula

How about just buy a cheap BD player, example Samsung BD-C5500, around RM 399.

It lets you playback:
- Blu-ray Disc
- DVD Disc
- VCD Disc

+ Support plenty of download movie format, you just need to copy your movies to hard disk and slot in to the BD player USB port:
user posted image

** Not support RMVB.

QUOTE
My recent test:

Samsung BD-C5500 can playback 4.3GB++ .mkv file perfectly and support .srt subtitle without any problem. No language encoding issue as well.
Bravo! more and more loving it now.

** Subtitle embedded inside .mkv file is not detectable, only separate .srt subtitle is detectable and working fine.
** Use MKVcleaver + MKVToolNix if you need to extracting out the subtitle inside .mkv file.

Nope, hardly find region free BD player now.. .but it is ok one as we are same region with American for BD.

BD - Region A
DVD - Region 3

Hey guys if I don't have a Blu-Ray player, can I still download 1080p or 720p films and play it using normal DVD player? Will the quality be the same or it wouldn't play at all?Cos I notice 720p and 1080p films are only for Blu-Ray

I'm new to this stuff,so sifus here please advise  notworthy.gif

720p and 1080p files are large. its require 7gb to 10 gb if i'm not mistaken. dvd disc only fit 4.2gb- 4.7gb. there are some converter or software to rip bluray to dvd like TsRemux( i think so), but the quality will reduce a bit.

Since I got BD, I no longer buy any ori DVD. I only support ori BD now biggrin.gif

Even a download .mkv (near BD quality) is far far clear than DVD also, DVD is obsolete for me already. smile.gif

BD rip (those 50GB file, sorry la, I won't try and download anyone of it)..so no idea... but understanding from the BD-C5500 specification, I believe it can playback the movie itself only not the entire rip BD include menu... I not sure about this.

Yaya! buy at Amazon is a great choice. Cheap & with better packaging.

Speedy Malaysia is hopeless, selling with over high price but bad packaging, mostly no slip cover/Steelbook/box set and no booklet.

For me I avoid Seagate at all cost...Really funny is Seagate 7200.11 still got ppl sell many in the forums...the return rates are tops.

And I feel the once reliable freeagent desk is also using those 7200.11 because the failure rate is more than usual.

Can i answer? C5500 cannot play 40GB files ripped of blueray. it just maybe can play certain 4.00GB ++ mkv files (read somewhere on the web).

imo TS, if you already have DVD player why you wanna buy BD player coz at the 1st time you also didnt want BD Player from sony rite?

just get a good media player + your current DVD player is the best setup, as you mention earlier that you also want to download some 720p or 1080p movies.

4GB/8GB/10GB+....you seriously don't need a lot of hard disk. Per GB is way cheaper.(even when considering the Streamyx line)..not to mentioned waste of time to burn to disc. Your maths failed.

And i can select any movies i want at the flick of the switch....nothing like lying on the sofa and take your sweet time to choose a movie streamed from my media server, instead of browsing a dusty cabinet for boxes and discs... rclxms.gif

Yupe, can play directly via HDD. No issue so far, perfectly run .MKV and no issue on .SRT subtitle as well.

I rather choose direct playing out from HDD.

No man actually what I have now is just a 42'' LCD TV with an old model Sony DVD player which DOES NOT support HD movies, nor does it support upscaling or Blu-Ray,it only supports plain old normal DVD's laugh.gif

What I want now is a home theatre system and also this Samsung BD-C5500 which is just what I need,I download movies from internet brows.gif, store it into my HDD,and plug it in into this Samsung BD-C5500,just what I need, and it also supports Blu-Ray which I may use in the future nod.gif

But now it's budget, either I get this Samsung BD-C5500 or I get a home theatre first

BD-C5500 can play m2ts. What you need to do is just rename the .m2ts to .mp4
