I notice that it's always about what you can get in KL but hardly anything about household needs in Penang. Surely, Penang has a lot of new properties built over last 10 years as the property prices have grown faster than KL or any where else in Malaysia. I would like to see a forum on Penang's renovation, contractors, dining/lounge/bedroom furniture, kitchen cabinets, home appliances and any other household items that we need to purchase for our new homes in Penang. There is no point of reading what we can get in KL. It's too time consuming and yet you get disappointed for not getting the appropriate info to do your renovation in Penang. For those companies from neighbouring towns/cities like Bukit Mertajam, Perai, Ipoh and Taiping, which can provide deliveries of their products to Penang or are willing to to do renovation works in Penang, you are most welcome to talk about what you can offer to residents in Penang.

It's not that hard to find furnitures and all in Penang. The only problem is that they're more expensive than KL and choices are less in general. Not to say that you there's no shops here which offers good deal but you need to survey extra hard to get good deals. Take furniture for example, while Penang furniture is scattered all around, in Puchong you can have 20-30 furniture shops in one area. I've seen some dining tables for eg which cost 999 in Penang but only cost 599-699 in KL. So prices there tend to be more competitive and choices are more than Penang in general. Same goes for Kitchen specialist and lighting shops.
Even ikea is priced competitively compared to Penang furnitures. I wonder how these furniture shops will survive if Ikea opens a branch in Mainland. This post has been edited by Drian: Dec 20 2010, 02:43 PM |

Ikea was suppose to open in Komtar, however the move was called off after it receive a lot of oppositions from the locals here. Don't know if this is true
For penang, most things are 2x more expensive compared to KL price. |

Keep sending enquiries to Ikea on when they are going to open in penang. Acually its in The Star that they made an announcement they are going to open a branch in Penang and Johor.
http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=...716&sec=happy50 I send enquires about when they are opening every week |

Thanks for all your valuable feedbacks.
I would suggest that everyone of us should do our parts in sending enquiries to Ikea as recommended by SnoWFisH. Are there any transport companies in KL which are keen to deliver furniture from KL to Penang. Maybe we should approach these KL transport companies to organise such delivery. Are there any contractors in Penang who are willing to provide labour to install all these DIY kitchen and bedroom furnitures? Leowson |

Ikea itself provide transportation service to outstation states. Just inquire at their customer service counter. You can ask the ikea lorry driver to install it for you as well
Most of Ikea things can be installed by yourself. All you need is a set of screwdrivers and also drill to drive screws for bigger stuff. Otherwise most contractors in Penang can install it for you. Of course its better that you are there to supervise and read up the installation sheet as most contractors don't do that |

Thanks Glamour.
Leowson Added on December 22, 2010, 8:27 amI have emailed IKEA yesterday regarding its opening in Penang and I have received the following reply from IKEA:- THank you for your mail. With regards to your enquiry, there are no plans at this point of time for another IKEA store. THank you. Best Regards, Aruna IKEA Damansara, No 2, Jalan PJU 7/2, Mutiara Damansara, 47800 Petaling Jaya, Selangor DE Telephone: 603 7726 7777 We should however keep on sending email to enquire on weekly basis as recommended by SnoWFisH. I have also enquired about IKEA's in-home service for Penang residents yesterday and I received the following reply:- I'm Shirley. Yes we provide assembly service in Penang. We will charge extra transport charges RM800. For installation fee we charge 80.00/metre. (Length). Hood, Hob, Oven each we charge RM80.00. For sink installation we charge RM160.00 (For outstation no warranty provided) For delivery charges you have to refer to Ikea Home Delivery. Any queries, call our office 03-77269954/8954. Regards! Thank you. CT ART DESIGNS SDN BHD I think $800 for transport charge is too high. Do IKEA's staff travel by limo service from KL to Penang. Even if they hire a car to travel to Penang, it should not be more than $400! Leowson This post has been edited by leowson: Dec 22 2010, 08:27 AM |
