so i have a question here, hopes forummer helps can helps,

1- x86_64 version of distro is 64bit right, so what is the advantages of x85_64bit over normal version (i686 as example) ?

2- says i have >4gb ram in the system, so theoretically not all 4gb ram is detected right, previously on fc14, i use pae kernel as suggested from my friend, but what is the best option here?

so i decided to change the distro from fedora to arch
i recently installed archlinux from stratch on my laptop, the things is I couldn't get the X to start.
i follow the guide on arch wiki step by step, and install the intel driver as written

CODE
pacman -S xf86-video-intel

so based on the warning in the log, it says vesa and fbdev driver not found so i issued another command

CODE
pacman -S xf86-video-vesa xf86-video-fbdev

only then i can start my X, but I doubt it's using the Intel driver, so it makes me unsatisfied, lol
so i figure i need to create xorg.conf and force my X to use intel instead, by issuing

CODE
Xorg -configure

also output some errors saying couldn't find /dev/fb0: no such file or directory
and some error saying number of created screens does not match number of detected devices bla bla

i take a look at the xorg.new.conf created (even though it said configuration file is not created), edit it myself and move it to /etc/X11/ folder
as expected, the X cannot be started, and only when I change the line Driver "intel" to Driver "vesa" in the device section,
I could get into my X. it seems like the intel driver is not recognized/loaded/i don't know.

Sorry if this is a noob question but I have spend all day looking for the solution but none of them works. and sorry, couldn't give much more info
as I'm writing from my desktop now, but if you guys need more details, feel free to ask. notworthy.gif

as my writing, the kernel is 2.6.33, it seems that pacman -Syu also returns error of some package conflicting. i need to works on that first.
also, i had checked all the dependencies for xf86-video-intel, all of them are installed already

^ i tried to issue pacman -Syu to update my system, the thing is I got the error about cloog and cloog-ppl are in conflict thus pacman cannot continue.

something like this thread
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=118578

since i don't really sure what cloog and cloog-ppl are doing, i'm a bit cautious to issue pacman -Syuf

if you guys can assured it is safe to force update, then only I will do it, lol

so i don't know how to proceed in order to update my system. a bit too afraid to force using -f btw

well, the situation is more complicated than that, now i'm at home with damn slow connection broadband, no wifi whatsoever, though i assume my wireless card also wouldn't work on 2.6.33 kernel, (it's intel centrino-n 6205 btw)

so i could only accessed LAN in end of sept when im entering uni, till then there's nothing really I could do right now, sigh

although i already edit the mirrorlist like u guys suggested. thanks for the help btw to all of u

hi, it's me again. seems like arch releasing the updated iso with kernel 3.0.3. so i got a few questions

1- core vs netinstall, does it make so much difference? if not, i would like to download core image and install it, else i'll wait till my semester starts for a better internet connection to do netinstall.

2- as my previous problem before, i give up on it. would like to do a fresh install, hopefully with latest kernel, it will work. but how do i proceed? since i already have the archlinux installed already. scared to mess up grub and eventually messed up my laptop. lol

3- been using only fedora 14 before, installing arch is quite tricky for me. during the select package stage, it is recommended to select the base and base-devel. how bout the other package that are listed besides that, is it somehow important or i should do fine with only base and base-devel package. thanks

yeah, the dhcp is what im lacking atm, so guess i need to proceed with core install. i already setup the partition, so if i'm referring to the beginner guide

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beginners'_Guide

means i could skip a few steps and proceed with selecting mountpoint and stuff? do i need to format the partition clean first or just overwrite the root and /home

successfully installed arch, turns out you guys are correct after all, it's kernel related, since i don't have any problem running it with kernel 3.0.3. just installed scrotwm, cmus, vim, vifm, weechat. tried finch but don't really like it, any other alternative for im?

the thing that confuse me is the usage of dot (.) or star(*), let's say for example

URxvt*color0

is it the same with

URxvt.color0 ?

Depends on your protocol. If you're on Jabber (Google Talk), then Mcabber should be a viable solution. It's my primary IM client these days mainly because of its support for OpenPGP encryption. Not sure how well it works behind a proxy though, but there's this bit in the default config file:

CODE
# Proxy
# mcabber can use a proxy if it supports the CONNECT method
# The proxy_user/proxy_pass variables are optional.
#set proxy_host = "192.168.1.1"
#set proxy_port = 3128
#set proxy_user = "username"
#set proxy_pass = "password"

You'll definitely need to do some reading to get it working, and you'll probably need to spend a bit of time getting used to the bindings and idiosyncrasies. It also doesn't have any default notifications, but I've set up a simple script to play a sound each time I get a message, so I'm sure you can do the same.

at last, something that works! proxy in my uni is such a pain in the arse, i still cant axel anything for a proxy with authentication
