A new study suggests that the United States could do better when it comes to home ISP prices. The Technology Policy Institute's latest survey of the global high speed Internet market finds that US residential broadband subscription rates have "remained fairly stable" over the last three years, rising by just two percent.

That's good, of course, since they didn't go way up. But residential broadband prices have fallen in most other countries, the paper notes—in some instances by as much as 40 percent.

The survey also found that prices in the United States for "triple play" plans are some of the most expensive among Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) member nations.....

60% of 1mbps package would be RM52.8 even though 1 mbps for that price is already expensive.

yes yes I fully agree that TM is too expensive. They should charge like this:

1mbps = RM20
2mbps = RM40
4mbps = RM80

Actually it is applied to most ISP in Malaysia. And for almost 10 years of broadband in Malaysia, we only see terms and conditions revision, not prices revision.

Thanks for sharing.

Standalone broadband is truly what we're looking for. I personally don't care about and don't need the IPTV or DECT phone when it comes to Unifi packages. Not saying I'm using Unifi though. I use 1Mbps streamyx.

*Sigh*

And no contract.

Come on man. You do know ringgit depreciates by 2-3% annually due to inflation right?

You can get a char-kuey-tiau and Teh Tarik for RM6, and you expect ISP to charge you 3 char-kuey tiau price for 1 month ?

Just saying though.

Bandwidth is getting cheaper by time. And where you get that food for that price? Damn expensive. At 5 star hotel?

soul2soul is right. That pricing structure I proposed earlier is too optimistic.

Perhaps the following may be a more equitable pricing for both ISP & user:

1mbps = $40
2mbps = $80
4mbps = $120
*
No you are not too optimistic, however what I am suggesting is we deserved more speed than it is not. For RM88 we paid for 512kbps then 1mbps for a long time that is when RM is still fixed. Now RM value is already increasing, we can buy more USD than before, so we deserved to get more.

In economy, it's unlikely the price of goods will come down beyond a point. What the manufacturer does is normally giving out more for the same price. So it's unlikely for ISP in malaysia to slash their pricing to ridiculously low price of 3 char-kueh-tiau for a month! It's more likely that they will give more bandwidth and speed for the same price.  Take Iphone for example. The pricing of these phones will NEVER come down beyond RM1500, but Apple will just give you MORE for RM2000 in their future products.

I was just trying to show you that , you cannot expect ISP to charge only RM20 / month for 1mbps connection. RM20 is not very big in malaysia you know. Watch 2 movies, eat 3 meals gone already. Prices of goods and commodity keeps going up. Raw materials also go up. Wagers also need to go up to catch up. ISP needs to pay more for more qualified people to manage their networks, and they are not doing you a charity.

5 star hotel charkuey tiau costs RM12 per plate.  RM4 - RM5 at KL already hawker stalls depending on the number of prawns they put in. You seldom eat outside is it? Eat more in KL and you will know how low the purchasing power of Ringgit is.

Bottom line is, ringgit's purchasing power has eroded so much since the 1970s as compared to Singapore/Brunei dollar. For RM20 is like only S$ 8. You think S$8 can get you 1mbps in singapore?

First, I think Apple is damn expensive. So since you have that mentality of getting something at any cost, then so be it. I can use RM50 for 3 to 4 days living as a student KL, depend on my desire. I don't watch movies. In fact my second home would be my class/library. So don't apply your concept of living to me. Just because you think RM20 is not enough, why don't you think about getting the most of that RM20? But I do believe we are underpaid.

1. That's not my question. That's their question. They ask you, you're not happy, and just what are you going to do about it?
2. You wait for people to riot, other people wait for you. I say the same for myself. It's VERY difficult and very sad.
3. Community must grow hateful and angry very slowly. It will take a long long time before anything's actually done.

This is not about sadness or happiness, this is about the damn capping.. which is really just sadness.

We are so lucky living in Malaysia because we have very fast and affordable internet connection.

Hmm is that, capping Streamyx to contribute more to UNIFI?
