boomy bass for me is cinema type bass...low...rumbly...with too much resonance and not much punch. (but cinema system obviously is tuned to make everything balance) it can also be high..but with too much resonance and odd harmonics
tight bass for me = extremely high end concert woofer bass... distortionless... where each note can be heard w/o overpowering the music...each note can be felt. |

i'm not a big fan of boomy bass for the type of music i usually listen to but it's nice to have for movies that have lots of explosions and the lot. to me boomy bass is when the bass is heavy to the point that it conpromises the clarity of the mids and also the highs

Boomy bass... if on subwoofer it could make my house ceiling vibrate, if on earphones, it could start "brainquake"
Not a fan of it, could make me headache, after 5mins listening, i will just take it off... |

QUOTE(dhouseng @ Dec 14 2010, 05:21 PM) +1 That frequency range is within what I thought I heard. Try This Love-Maroon 5. A bloated headphones/system wouldn't get the bass cleanly. Observe clean passage like the beginning.is this called boomy bass ?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zb3sZdTW3mA the 125hz is very uuuuunggg which is the problem i am having now. Anyway, you need a good headphone as your reference to know what you're missing out and Youtube isn't the best source. Just for example. This post has been edited by mengsuan: Dec 14 2010, 10:39 PM |

What do you call this type of bass? I think it's way too below boomy sound. Like very distorted. And whats the point of listening to such bass? Added on December 14, 2010, 10:56 pmI would say that other than the coloration on the mids, another difference between tight bass and boomy bass is their timing on stopping the sound. (not sure how to explain) Boomy bass requires a longer time for it to stop while tight bass stop very fast making more accurate and doing what it is suppose to do. So it means Boomy Bass= tum tum tum Tight Bass= tun tun tun. (it knows when it's suppose to stop) This post has been edited by Akuma no Hana: Dec 14 2010, 10:56 PM |

QUOTE(Akuma no Hana @ Dec 14 2010, 10:48 PM) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pCs5_V6g5ds thats the loudness of the sound reaching the limits of the mic so the mic clips and creates the distorted bass. if you're there in the car, it'll sound nothing like that. What do you call this type of bass? QUOTE(walabies @ Dec 15 2010, 05:45 PM) Nop, bass guitar can produce good deep bass, boomy is the uncontrolled bass produced by your speaker, more to like 'not realistic'. +1Boomy is uncontrolled messy muddy crackling bass that is irritating and annoying. And it's unrealistic, and distracts you from the music. |

Listen to those cheap PC multimedia speakers, even more expensive model such as Logitech Z-2300 or Z-5500 is boomy.
Some, especially cheap ones, or labeled for gaming (like mentioned above) multimedia PC subs have high cutoff frequency, means other than bass could be reproduced on subs, causing it to sound ridiculous, bloating and mudding the lows. Often they use passive radiator, yes externally it might be big 10 or 12 inches and so on but the truth is there's smaller driver inside drive these passive diaphragm. |

QUOTE(dhouseng @ Dec 14 2010, 11:49 AM) Yea ladies and gentlemen, actually what does boomy means?? Boomy = sounds like a cannon firing. Many people think the opposite of boomy bass is tight bass? I think this is not correct? Many people also think boomy bass is like putting a sub in an empty room with high echo. Excessive bass around 125 Hz. Room resonance? I think this is the correct meaning? |

During my school days, I used to frequent a tuition class in Jalan Pudu above a shoplot. The room was exactly next to the bus stop. That's what boomy means? You know when a bus stops and is at idle to pick up passengers, it sort of vibrates and has that "unnnnng" sound from the huge diesel engine? Whenever a bus stops next to the room, that sound is so strong enough to pass into the room, reverberating inside... giving me a headache after each class and makes me nauseous. That's boomy bass. It reverberates like crazy. All those 垃圾tech (Logitech), Edi废物 (Edifier), Sonic Gear, Altec Lansing (yes, the used-to-be-awesome Altec Lansing) has boomy bass, regardless of how expensive they make a customer pay. I may not be an uber audiophile, but at least I don't do ah beng stuff. This post has been edited by iamyuanwu: Dec 19 2010, 11:23 PM |

It's when the bus is idle (stopped), and the huge engine is rattling. Outside the bus, you won't feel it. But the room next to the bus will hear and feel the engine's rattling reverberating like mad in the room. It's that reverberation that describes the boomy bass. |
