The Emotional Highbury and The Grand Ashburton Grove

Highbury 1913-2006

For the majority of their time in south-east London, Arsenal played at the Manor Ground in Plumstead, a three-year period at the nearby Invicta Ground between 1890 and 1893 excepted. The Manor Ground was initially just a field, but the club installed stands and terracing in time for their first Football League match in September 1893. They played their home games there for the next twenty years (with two exceptions in 189495), until the move to north London in 1913.

Arsenal Stadium, widely referred to as Highbury, was Arsenal's home from September 1913 until May 2006. The original stadium was designed by the renowned football architect Archibald Leitch, and had a design common to many football grounds in the UK at the time, with a single covered stand and three open-air banks of terracing. In the 1930s, the entire stadium was given a massive overhaul, with new Art Deco West and East stands constructed, opening in 1932 and 1936 respectively; in addition, the North Bank terrace had a roof added, which was later bombed during World War II and not restored until 1956.

At its peak, Highbury could hold over 60,000 spectators, and had a capacity of 57,000 until the early 1990s. The Taylor Report and Premier League regulations forced Arsenal to convert Highbury into an all-seater in time for the 199394 season, reducing the capacity to 38,419 seated spectators. This capacity had to be reduced further during Champions League matches to accommodate additional advertising hoardings, so much so that for two seasons (199899 and 199900) Arsenal played Champions League home matches at Wembley, which could house more than 70,000 spectators.

Final moments - the emotions run high in Highbury

Ashburton Grove 2007-present

Expansion of Highbury was restricted because the East Stand had been designated as a Grade II listed building and the other three stands were close to residential properties. These limitations have prevented the club from maximising the revenue that their domestic form could have brought in recent seasons. After considering various options, in 2000 Arsenal proposed building a new 60,000-seater stadium at Ashburton Grove, since renamed the Emirates Stadium, about 500 metres south-west of Highbury. The project was initially delayed by red tape and rising costs, but construction was completed in July 2006, in time for the start of the 200607 season. The stadium is named after its sponsors, the airline company Emirates, with whom the club signed the largest sponsorship deal in English football history, worth approximately 100 million; however some fans refer to the ground as Ashburton Grove, or the Grove, as they do not agree with corporate sponsorship of stadium names. The stadium will be officially known as Emirates Stadium until at least 2012, and the airline will be the club's shirt sponsor until the end of the 201314 season.

I didn't read much about previous posts but please minimize your taunting on individuals like Evra.

I am sure fellow members here can be more professional than some professional footballers icon_rolleyes.gif

Just stick to football/Arsenal discussion, shall we? rclxm9.gif

Wenger refuses to rise to Evra bait

CODE
Wenger, though, said he had no interest in retaliating.

"He gave you some good stuff to make it all hot before the game," Wenger said during his weekly press conference. "We are guided by the way we want to play football and not by the statements of anybody who plays against us.

[B]"Personally, I believe if you are a big player you always respect your opponent and that is what we try to do."
[/B]
Asked if Evra had been disrespectful, he replied: "I leave that judgment to you. We do not want to go into any unneeded talking before a game like that.

"We want to focus on the way we want to play and ignore any provocation before a game. We are motivated by the desire to win the game and by the quality of the football we want to play."

I don't think AW would really drop Fabianski and opt for Szczęsny (yes, I copy-n-paste the name tongue.gif )

It's too risky and not AW's style to gamble a non-experienced GK.

Anyway, it will be a massive match and I am looking forward for it.

Time to sleep. see ya!

Sorry guys, I was too occupied with work and other stuffs (everyday I am sad.gif )

To all the visitors,

This is Arsenal Street Talk, I hope you understand the sentiments that we ARE biased smile.gif

AW is Arsenal Manager, do you expect Arsenal fans NOT to stand behind him?

AW blamed the pitch, I am not a professional but I did see it slippery and the ball bound better. Also, AW did not blame the pitch 100% for our loss. He did praise MU defended well etc (but nobody from MU camp appreciate that). I think AW's post-match comment was professional; he gave due compliments to MU and our team; he stated what he thought was not right. Some pros and some cons.

I am not trying to teach you how to behave in our thread but let's be more respectful to each other. Try to make friends rather than enemies. I know some posts are harsh but I am sure there have been worse somewhere else whistling.gif Please REPORT if you think it goes overboard [although I do not patrol other threads to REPORT tongue.gif ]

Yes, we are defeated. 3 points to MU, simple as that. Bragging rights or not, it depends on how you carry it.

Lastly, we; fans/supporters are here to support the club. If you think whatever you are doing is heading to this direction, congrats rclxms.gif

It's not easy to get respect from everyone, however it is easier to show your respect to everyone. So, I am expecting flames now, shoot me laugh.gif

Mate.. sorry to intervene but please ignore the idiots who post rubbish here... those who bragged too much and are flaming you guys. To be honest, not all man utd fans hate arsenal.. OK, hate is a strong word to me.. I respect all the opponents, but to hate.. better reserve the hate for something else worth the hate in this world, not a football team. Even for other teams like Liverpool, Chelsea etc etc.. hate is sometimes misused by some immature people in this world.

Take a look at the beginning of this match, how Sir Alex and Wenger walked out together as friends. Even these 2 important figures from both clubs could have more logic and sense..

As a United fan.. I respect arsenal and also some of it's nice traditions. For example, how the team players are all united to wear long sleeve or short sleeve shirts in the pitch (the call is made by the team captain). These small things mean a lot actually. Also, to me Wenger is the manager that I respect the most after Sir Alex. A reason why Sir Alex drops his guard and mellows a bit nowadays.. Respect is there.. Also how Wenger manages to turn players from a certain role to another role (he made Lauren a midfielder to a right back for example). I respect that...

Just to ensure you that not all united fans are like some idiots in this thread here.. All the best to you all.
*
No doubt, there are good and bad in everything.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't mention any specific names in my post doesn't mean I am against whole MU or its fans. It's just a piece of advice to everyone actually.

Nowadays, a lot of people have forgotten that the reason why SPORT (or Football in our context) is introduced. sweat.gif Actually I also do not know tongue.gif

BUT one thing that I am 100% sure, SPORT/Football is NOT to promote hatred flex.gif

~ Peace!

As I always say in our thread: we are responsible for our actions. If your posts get recognitions and respect, the same goes to your reputation. The same to the opposite. And yeah, someone may say that "I don't give a damn to reputation".... oh well, that's you, not me tongue.gif [not "you" lar, bro mozart - just a general statement]

I always think that Barcelona is the complete version of Arsenal.

-A good CM who can control the midfield with exceptional vision and magical passing ability = Xavi = On form Cesc
-A player who can dribble with the ball and run at defense = Iniesta = Arshavin that plays well, not the Arshavin this morning.
-A good holding midfielder = Busquets = Alex Song that doesn't always wander forward
-A striker with decent finishing = Villa = On form RvP
-Arguably the best player in the world = Messi = ???  laugh.gif

So we just need to find a Messi no.2 sweat.gif

Anyway the above comparison is just for fun  tongue.gif
*
Yeah, it's good to have a change of topics rclxms.gif ... although Barca as an example may be too hard for some of us to swallow.

Well, I am not gonna to compare players with players because I always believe players can be in and out (transfer), up and down (form); club football philosophies and cultures last (if the manager is staying).

Taking Barca as an example (sorry guys sad.gif ) :

I think what we can learn is to play faster football. In short, to me, Barca is a faster version of Arsenal (no offense to Barca fans - just a personal opinion)

Never ever thought to hear bro sakaito missing Diaby laugh.gif

Whether Jack > Diaby, it's still early to decide.

Jack is more "obedient" and sit at the back more often; compared to Diaby. I reckon Jack to sit on the bench more often so that he can sit behind and observe, to learn what is required by the team and what he can offer to the team. Of course learning by experience is important too but since we have quite a number of midfielders, I prefer him to sit on the bench biggrin.gif

do you think Wenger will play Chamakh upfront and with Nasri switch to Arshavin position and let RVP play?
*
With Bendtner being given holiday for becoming a father biggrin.gif, I'm sure Chamakh will start (and play upfront). I think AW will stick to Nasri on right, Arshavin on left. For middle, it depends on whether RvP and/or Fabregas will be allowed to start.

Being realistic, the current Arsenal is still not ready for Barca; especially due to the recent defeat to MU.

But, the match is in February! I'm sure there are plenty of stuffs that we can pick up along the way.

I believe if we can keep everybody injury-free and top form, we will be able to do it.

Let's concentrate on EPL first for the coming 1 month++, shall we?
