I called Dell today and they said my ETA is 20 Jan! 1 month to deliver! WTF???

They should have planned the supply & demand properly next time.  am so disappointed...

I should have hold on my purchase and wait for Sandy Bridge.
*
Sandy Bridge won't help much la.. Only 5-10% increase in performance, the good thing about SB is the big improvement with their Intel GPU, but doesn't apply in this case anyways

It's weird that GT500M series are already out but Dell is producing new laptops using GT400M series...

but honestly with RM 600 i can upgrade ALOT of components.

Hmmm well i'm thinking between ASUS and dell, for dell, its expensive with 3 years warranty. ASUS is cheap and come with 2 years global warranty, but i heard alot of problems with ASUS
*
don't judge just by hearing what some ppl say, there're tons of ppl saying Asus is most reliable also... Have heard ppl having lots of problems with dell as well.. It all depends on luck and how u take care of ur laptop by the end of the day.. If you want good warranty services, by all means go for Dell...

Don't think so. Just recently we had dual-core Atom launches, but not many manufacturers have put it to use as far as I can see.

Also, not much is going to change for the i5 SB processor. Marginal changes, if any. Only the i7 will get substantial benefits.

Matt screens have never been popular although there has demand and that is not likely to change, SSDs getting cheaper will take a while too. Expect marginal in 'months'. Even the XPS only dropped 300-400 bucks IINM to clear stock, so how convinced are you that in a few months the price of SSDs will drop in a big percentage?
*
Dual Core atom have been out for months already lar.. It's available on many netbooks, Asus 1015PEM, Acer Aspire One Happy, Acer Aspire One D255 etc...

Anyways, you're forgetting about AMD Fusion in netbooks, the star of CES2011... Should be coming to our shores very soon hopefully.... Both CPU n GPU performance pawn Atom gao gao..

So there we go then, absolutely no point getting the xps now. If it was a dramatic 1k plus price cut, thats a good bargain, and it would mean its a good time to purchase a laptop. But reality is, the only 'available' notebook right now is the Acer Aspire 5750G. Comparing this situation to a fruit/farmers market thing, its like getting there an hour before they all pack up and leave, you're just left with the scraps instead of shelves over flowing with big, fat... bright juicy veggies and fruit. I am doing a 24hr stop over in KL on the 28th before I head to Sydney for studies. So fingers crossed I'd have some choices regarding laptops with SB processors.
Not having a lot of time on my hands to browse around, what would be the best place to do my shopping? Lowyat or the Digital mall in PJ? Ive also read that theres an IT Fair of some sorts up at the Mega Mall from the 28th to the 31st, one would suspect all new products (including SB laptops) would be available there. Please advice me. thank You smile.gif

Just look at it....what a gorgeous piece of equipment.....<3333

There's quite a few SB laptops now...

Acer 5750G at rm2899
Lenovo Y560p at rm2999
HP dv6 at rm3299 - can buy in Malaysia HP website
Asus N53SN rm3599 - coming next week apparently
Lots more coming next week I bet..
HP dv6 have the best GPU among these 4 but concerned about the heating probes though.. Heck it's dv series we're talking about here

Well... For sub-3k, u get performance like i7-940XM which was supposed to be available only high-end notebooks of rm6k at least in the past...

It might be as you stated where it performs almost the same as the current quads during GAMING, well not all ppl need a strong processor for gaming, they might have other needs like heavy photo editting programs/engineering programs/virtual machines... All of these does benefit from the new core i am sure, if not benchmarks are visually misleading then..

If they have to refresh specs, they shouldn't need to discontinue ordering parts, would it? Like the backlight keyboarding, what has it got to do with processors or any other components. Clearly they are going to stop production already. Something new with updated model architecture is replacing it.
*
Yea, maybe got new design of the XPS system.. But that's kinda a bit early though, considering it just release 2 months ago..

March coming out but discontinuing 2 months earlier? What is Dell thinking?! Unless they release the SB earlier, XPS is gonna suffer much lower sales these 2 months.. Not only their competitors have much lower prices for i5-480m laptops now, XPS GpU also more inferior considering no more i7, u can't choose 435m

Do we really have to wait till late March for XPS with SB? I was hoping early February like the XPS 17 with SB in USA.

Maybe that's what the Dell sales person wants us to think, so that we'd be impatient and just help them clear the current XPS stock? Hmm?
*
I think it would be march at least cause Dell probably wanna refresh it when all the other high end quad and dual core SB's come out... It's reasonable also considering the current XPS only came out in November... Refreshing specs so early, they would definitely gain losses

If the socket isn't properly grounded then you'll get shocks, I guess.
Actually, it's 'safe' to buy now. Just that they're recalling the chipsets, so we're not entirely sure if the flaw affects the processor. If it also affects the processor, then whoever who buys a SB laptop, good luck la  whistling.gif

Thank goodness I got my XPS 15 before the backlit keyboard ran out and all.  laugh.gif
*
it doesnt affect the processor, but it affects the e-Sata port on the Mobo... as they stated, the port would deteriorate over time.. means we won't even be able to see the problems within the first few months or in short term..

Added on February 1, 2011, 11:58 amdepends how u treat the word safe also lar...

since we're gonna buy 2-3 years warranty for our laptops, within that period if anything happens we can have warranty to change it....
if not, means the Mobo is just fine...

Well at least that's how i look at it..

XPS 15 and XPS 17 have been refreshed in the U.S. Dell website with Sandy Bridge processors and Nvidia GeForce 500M series GPU's. They also feature chiclet styled keyboards.

L502X and L702X.

I don't think we will have the 17 inch version here in Malaysia, but fingers crossed that the new XPS 15 will, and fast.
*
Hmm... Price-wised it's a bit expensive if u compare to current SB laptops...

Entry specs already 1k USD, around rm3200 if it hits our shore I am guessing.. it's only a dual core SB and 525M

I'm guessing you're guessing wrong. I think anything costing USD1000 there will start at RM3499/3599 here...

Those Americans are already buying it - and they have XPS 17 in the UK already. We might get it within a week (with not as many options).
*
That's old news dy.. Since a year ago, USA lappie prices have been adjusting and quite close to our direct exchange rate.... Many lappies such as Asus, Apple, and Dell...

Here are the following trends...

Dell M101z around $449 when launched, Malaysia's was RM1499... Around Rm100 diff

Apple MacBook Air 11 at $999, Malaysia's RM3299.. ARound Rm200 diff

Asus U36Jc at $999, Malaysia's RRP RM3099, SRP RM2999.. Either same or cheaper...

There are some others as well like HP, but I dun remember the prices... So I am very sure the new Dell price would be close to USA price.. Lets just see hehe...

I hope the important options will be available, such as the backlit keyboard. (the main reason I decided to ditch the L501X and wait for the L502X!)

I'm looking to get one with these specs:

» Click to show Spoiler - click again to hide... «

When I configure this on the U.S. website it's about $1500, hopefully it won't be way over RM 4000 when it gets here.

Haha backlit keyboard is gonna be expensive! Good luck lol..

if you refer to the last page of this thread, you'll find the link to XPS15 2nd gen i7 smile.gif
i already compared and configurated the lappy many times. and, there's no quads core option.
but i like the option to better screen which XPS14 dont have.

------------------

haha lee,

looks like you;ve edited your post. yup that;s the link.  tongue.gif

-------------------------

lee,

since you mention it's better. can u explain to me how better it is? coz i cant understand based on the version number.

but i bet, any of them is still better than my AMD Athlon x2 processor, it's so damn hot. fried my mobo few times liao.
*
SB processor is at least 15-20% better in terms of CPU performance than the first generation, better power consumption (meaning longer battery life and lower temp)..e.g. i7-2630QM, the Q means Quad core...

By all means, get the new SB processor if you have the choice, the first generation quad is not really that good...
