Good! Finally a specific thread for XPS 14 and 15 laptops. Owned the laptop almost for a month now. Still haven't encounter any problem so far. Happily gaming tongue.gif

to anyone wanting to buy a Cooler Master NotePal Infinite for their brand new XPS, I strongly suggest you don't. I've just purchased one this afternoon and did some temp testings and found out that there's totally no difference in the temperature at all. I had a Cooler Master NotePal U2 and it effectively lowers the temperature of the laptop.. I strongly recommend U2 instead of infinite. save your $$!

hi guys, i'm thinking of returning my CM Notepal infinite back to the store that i bought it from..
they have lots of other CM notebook coolers too but the problem is, i cant decide which one i should exchange it for. (doesn't matter if its equal/lower/or higher price)
should i get X1, X2 or U3?
X1 has an extra USB port that would be useful to me but it has only one big + unremovable fan and the fan is 120mm.
X2 has an extra USB port too, but it has only one big and also unremovable fan. but the fan is 140mm
U3 has 3 removable fans, and too has one extra USB port. though the fan controller is an extra plus.

i wanna know what you guys think.. all opinions and suggestions welcome smile.gif

p.s. weight and portability don't matter to me since i dont plan to take it around.. it's just gonna be on my desk.

Guys i've received my xps 15, and is quite impressed with it. the nice aluminium brush finishing really looks great. but after i installed gta iv, the fan somehow revs up to a noticeable loudness. plus i can feel warm air blasting on the left side. and the left side palm rest is quite warm
*
that's pretty normal lol

Since the U3 has 3 fans, I've placed one fan under each vent of the laptop (except the one on the one beside the USB port that blows out hot air)..
And i realised that when idle, its best to put the fan speed to lowest to achieve maximum cooling. No idea why though

hey guys
i use notepal U3 and positioned each fans on each vents under the laptop and it is constantly on whenever i am using the lappie.
my laptop's temps used to be around 47-52c during idle
but lately, the idle temps has gone up to 56-61c..

i am not sure whether it is because it's the weather (because its been raining less in the past week), or because of the dust in my laptop.

i've opened up the the part of the laptop where you can access the RAM and WWAN card, but there doesnt seem to be any dust in the vents..

does anyone have any idea of what could be going on?

How sure are you that it's truly idle when idle? I monitor my laptop's CPU speed with NHC just to make sure before making any assumptions.

Possible reasons might be:

1.) Surrounding temperature
2.) Background apps using the processor

Or, it could be something with the fan. No promises on that though.
the cpu fan seems to be working alot harder lately because of the increased temp.
i believe the most likely culprit is the surrounding temprature because of the weather recently

i am not very sure that it's truly idle although i do not on any programs/applications and i leave the laptop idle for at least 30mins while i observe the temperature

One of the reasons I'm getting the 9 cell battery for elevation. smile.gif
*
that's the temp i have even though i'm using a coolermaster notepal u3 which provides quite an elevation for the laptop too..

if possible try not to put the battery in when you are gaming. Since heat kills the battery, why not just take a box and put it under the laptop. Thats what i did
*
true.. its never good to leave your battery in the laptop. in my opinion, its best to take the battery out whenever you have a wall socket nearby you or when you are gaming..

I'm thinking of reapplying a new layer of thermal compound into my XPS15 following this guide.

The problem is that I'm not sure of what brand of thermal compound i should use..

any suggestions? my budget is anything below RM70 if that matters

popular one are artic cooling mx series or tuniq tx
can easily get from PC shop for RM20-RM30 like that

you have to know that i7 (quad core) is not suppose to be cold

OT: i see u like pioneer CDJ and mixer stuffs, try rekordbox
http://www.prodjnet.com/rekordbox/support/
its a music player, but u can play lots of "fun stuff" like.. hot cue, loop, vinyl scratch, etc..
too bad it only support one track each playback
*
haha its not that i like DJ and mixer stuffs.. i just happened to stumble across this wallpaper online and used it as my desktop wallpaper.. biggrin.gif
yes i do know that i7 isnt supposed to be cold. 50-55c is normal temp but in the link that i posted earlier just now, the picture of XPS's original thermal paste looks pretty lousy. thats why i want to repaste it with something better..
and the temperature after repasting is around 40-45c which seems to me like its pretty worth it.

Why choose XPS 15 Over XPS 14 ?

1) Bigger screen
2) With Subwoofer
3) With 2 USB 3.0 port

Then you should know that the quad cores of the i7 isn't fully utilized on games, and that you're only gaining a marginal improvement  laugh.gif

Sorry to interrupt but when my sister was ordering the XPS 15, they didn't have the backlit keyboard option anymore. Did Dell removed it permanently?

i also realised that the solid state drive option is gone too blink.gif
