I applied aa and finance officer. i received call for finance position. Does finance officer has great learning and exposure compare to audit?
*
I believe the finance officer is doing their accounting stuff at the company unless the finance you are referring to is part of the advisory.

Assuming I am right, it is better to do audit since it provides a better exposure and prospects once you decide to leave.

How transferable are the auditing skills for management consulting?

Would really like to get into strategy consulting one day and found out that there isn't much strategy firms out there.

I am currently trying out the entry levels for every consulting firms that I can find, but I really doubt my chances, particularly in the bulge bracket.

For management consulting I believe auditing does help, but would operational audit help more or is it the same with financial auditing? Would I be able to claim ACCA membership working in the same area?

Got a lot of auditing skills but I think should be DEALING and ANALYSIS. You need to be good in networking and capable to talk to different people. Auditors normally interview finance managers or at best CFOs. But consultants can range from CEOs to Datuks. Analysis skills is to help back up your communication skills. Cannot simply talk crap right ?

Not a lot, but the goods ones are not easy to get into like Bain, BCG, McKinsey,.....etc. Can wiki them I guess. I heard their junior paid in USD. Its like triple compared to auditors.

Acca membership I dont think consultant will help, cos its either finance, law or business related, hardly about accounting. I think it will be at much slower rate though. I never heard a management consultant company with ACCA recognition. If you really want a good qualification, think of MBA.
Actually comes to consulting, what they really want is jack of all trades rather than speciallist. Accountant / auditor strikes me more to speciallist type. Of course its just a general stereotype as everyone will not subject to similar treatment.

*
Thanks for the explanation.

I understand that Big4 prefers their employees to go for 1-2 years of auditing experience before applying for their advisory arm. Wouldn't it a little waste if dealing and analysis is all that is transferable when you have put at least an additional 1 year into auditing, especially when those from elite UK schools gets straight into advisory as fresh grads?

I'm really interested in consulting, wouldn't mind putting my ACCA membership on hold if I do get into consulting, not just MBB, but even the Big4 would be suffice. I will consider an MBA after 3-5 years of working if I get into my choice of school.

Emmm, this really depends. But what I generally heard that freshie that joins advisory have very slow learning curve. Sooner or later they will be thrown to audit to learn some stuffs. But this highly depend on which advisory you join. Some have peak periods while some remain constant. But I heard best to join consultancy or advisory after few years of external experience. Thats why you can hear people without business background to become advisors such as doctors, engineers, lawyers,.....etc. Bcos they can advise based on the field of experience.

The transferable skill ai mentioned is only those I think will be most relevant. Of course, I think among all fields, you will learn the most in audit as a freshie which you need to know almost everything out of something. From there you can build you niche, some like to be problem solving auditor, some professional analytical auditor while some just action packed gung ho style.
*
I have a friend, a fresh grad in KPMG CF who was advised to spent a year in audit before coming back to CF. And friends have told me about the learning curve as well.

Joining as an auditor gives us insights of MNC's best practices which enables us to join consultancy later on to consult on inferior firms? Is my point valid? Since MNC's operations are assumed to be at its best in the industry, we will be able to consult what we have learned from there and adjust accordingly to suit lesser firms?

Just one question, how well do you think you know the details of how our clients operations are?
I might know the rough processes, and what sort of documents are needed along the way, but I've got little idea of what their decision making processes are like, or what sort of thought process do they go through on whether to decide on make payments etc or not.

Without knowing the details, I find it hard to sell myself as a subject matter expert, even though I've been doing say client X for the last 4 years.
*
Very interesting. What about operational audit? Does that provide us with a better picture of the overall company's operations? I really want to carve a path to a management side of things, to be able to be responsible in operations while being able to expose myself to practices of many companies in many different industries.

just wondering, i'm already offered a job in firm A which starts in Jan but also accepted for interview in another firm B... should I reveal during the interview that I'm already offered a job in firm A? thanks
*
I believe you should just tell them your availability date taking into account the notice period of resigning from firm A if you want to join firm B. Don't reveal anything that does not bring good to your image.

Only if your investments meet the requirements of the independence policies of the audit firm you are working in. Generally, you and your immediate family members will not be allowed to invest in shares in PLCs (and group of companies under those PLCs) that are clients, regardless of whether or not you are assigned to the team that provide services to these clients.

In many countries such as USA and UK, there are Independence Regulations; Big4 have lots of MNC clients, and the audits of these companies could be subjected to compliance of these regulations.
Example: Audits of MNC with operations/Head Office in USA maybe subjected to the Securities and Exchange Commission's independence requirements (very strict!).

If you wish to know more on this topic, you can always google "Auditor Independence Issues"
*
My immediate family as in mom and dad as well? My dad's a remisier and he uses his whole family's name to buy shares since he can't buy any. How strict is the screening etc or do we just need to sign a form stating independence and then only when something happens they will check the issue out?

what's the range of pay that I should be expecting from a med firm in Sg if I have almost 1/2 year of exp in med firm here?
*
Expect fresh grad pay. 0.5 years means nothing especially from a medium firm.

and if you are 1st class hon degree holder get as much as ACCA graduates + big4 willing to sponsor your prof qualification+plenty of study leave.
*
Study leave is pretty much standard. 5 days leave per paper for ACCA, ICAEW should be a month. You don't get extra study leave just because you are a 1st class degree holder, it should be the other way round since you are smart enough to get 1st class, you don't need that much study leave for your papers.

Pay wise, I heard that they are willing to pay more if you are prize winners and stuff but I have yet to see one who has a different pay scale among fresh graduates.

May i know what is the market salary for ACCA Finalist(without OBU or any degree)
*
You will most probably be earning only 1.8k since you have no qualification at the moment.

But some firms have been paying 2.8k for finalist and will only downgrade if you fail your papers. Depends on the firm I guess.

i have one question here,
i have receive an invitation from Pwc to attend its assessment...
how long does it takes for them to finish one interview session with their candidates?

thxx guys...
your help is greatly appreciated ^^
*
Its an assessment, not interview session.

The assessment includes normal numerical and language test and essay writing. Piece of cake, but be careful of the time constraint. Normally takes around 1.5 hours or more.

Interview session takes around an hour.

oic....
final question here,
does it involve any group discussion or group presentation....
and usually how long does it take for them to shortlist their candidates after the assessment....

thanks for your reply
*
All are individually assessed. They practically take in anyone who passes the assessment, which is already a piece of cake.

Expect to see 80% of the candidates you meet that day to be accepted.
