I guess the only thing to do is don't be choosy and join a small firm or middle tier (might be hard as well was thinking of UHY, PVF, Moore stephens) . Then quickly get ACCA OR other professional qualification to boost own value.
*
Join small firm, learn to do every single shit laugh.gif

From there, work hard to leap out to the bigger ocean much later.

Worse come to worse, you will enter Big 4 as experience hire instead of fresh entry laugh.gif

Do they take into account say the experience in a non accounting firm. Let's say I work like accounts executive in some corporate firm then at the same time pursue papers like ACCA then after finishing join big four or other middle tier firms
*
Enter as Junior / Fresh grad.

Even with 3 years working experience in medium firms, they will likely discount your experience based on your exposure.

So if possible, find a firm that is filled with nice people, decent study leaves for you to study and quickly pass your exams.

Once you pass the exams, time for you to make the move to the big 4.

yes agree with u that they will discount ur experience plus salary too!

Salary sensitive topic whistling.gif

Small to Mid firm still pays quite handsomely compared to fresh entry Big 4.

Even under experience hire, the salary discount percentage is pretty hardcore too sweat.gif

i know right.. kind of devastating to me when they do such.. all the hard work and they just slash it off..  cry.gif

I understand why they are doing so as well thou.

In all fairness, they have no idea about one's exposure in the field and offering a higher salary for a candidate may be deemed unfair to another which may have such relevant experience.

I'm just a sad, underpaid chartered holder only whistling.gif

Been thinking to go to Big 4 but I missed the cutoff date for promotion next year if I join now.

Plus with my current lifestyle, Big 4 would be a 360 change rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(LordReaper @ May 12 2015, 05:51 PM)
hello, do big4 consider fresh graduate for advisory department?
or taking CFA exam while doing auditor in big4 then request for a transfer from audit depart to advisory(corporate finance)?
- does it weird for a auditor to take CFA but not ACCA ?
thanks for enlighten me..
*
They do, occasionally.

I don't think CFA is under the list of "Sponsored" program with Big 4 for Assurance ( CPA Aus/ACCA/ICAEW are if i am not mistaken ). Means you got no study break for your exams and would be forced to use your annual leaves.

Request for transfer? Not sure, but the partner that interviewed me told me that it will be like fresh hire process.

They will interview you all over again and you would have to wait if the department have vacancy or something.

Not sure whether it will be "weird" or not, but it surely is not strange to do so.

Thanks for the feedback, but I actually meant working as accounts executive preparing ledgers and stuff etc in a NON accounting firm while pursuing my papers. Does the experience working with non accounting firms counts tho or I should just look for accounting firms of any sizes to work temporarily to increase my foundation and knowledge. Cuz ACCA requires 3 years working in accounting firms so fear that non accounting firms doesn't count. Correct me if I'm wrong. Still a freshie smile.gif
*
It counts towards MIA membership.

It maybe nothing much compared to ACCA membership in the long run but it's better than nothing tongue.gif

Plus, if you have 3 relevant working experience, you might have to just endure the PER writeup to be a full member of the ACCA without the need to spend another 3 in Big 4.

But that's just my guess. I could be wrong and seniors here are in much better position to offer guidance.

Ohh. my worries is that if i cant get to join big four or other middle tier accounting firms due to poor degree results then I have no choice but to join non accounting corporate firms to work as accounts executive and at the same time pursue my papers. Then if say i finished my ACCA papers then if my previous experiences in the non accounting firm doesnt count then i have to spend another 3 years to work in accounting firm all over again.
*
Trust me, small firm will still hire.

Heck, even diploma holders also they might take in some time.

All you gotta do is TRY.

Start drafting your resume, and start applying.

Jobstreet has plenty of opening.

Anyway, this is getting a little outta topic so I'm gonna stop here.

Good luck for your career pathway to Big 4 someday! icon_rolleyes.gif

QUOTE(I_Thought @ Aug 12 2015, 08:00 AM)
Hi all, hope you all are well. Fortunately that i have cleared all my paper during the june 2015 sitting and finally an affiliate. (Cleared all in first attempt)

I have just applied to all the big 4, summited my resume and cover letter and waiting for their reply. My question is that, usually how long it takes for them to reply me? For the expected salary, i have enter RM 3000, is this too much?

Im getting a little bit anxious and afraid of getting reject by them due to my degree results (second class lower). sad.gif thats the only thing that lower down my self-esteem. Regret for being so lazy during my degree.
*
3,000 is the standard package for fresh grad anyways laugh.gif

Or at least, I recalled that much.

QUOTE(I_Thought @ Aug 18 2015, 02:07 AM)
Thanks for the reply, what about my degree result, will that affect me? I am unemploy right now and i really hope to get a job in big four. Feel so useless as i am doing nothing everyday at home lol.
Thanks for the reply, however when i tell my friend (not in audit/accounting field at all) that i enter my expected salary for rm3000, he straight away say "keep dreaming". So i thought i shouldn't have enter so high.

Same question, will my degree result affect my employment oppotunity in big 4?
*
Tell him to do some googling.

Pretty sure he can verify the salary of junior associates in Big 4.

As per your degree results, I have no idea as I don't even have a degree. Just a qualification which expires when I stop paying fees doh.gif

But it should not make sure a big impact if they already interviewed you and etc.

Thats the problem, I happy for too long already. 2 weeks after result published only go and apply job, see where am I now? lol. learnt it the hard way.

I really hope the first job I get after graduate is audit related job. I want to learn stuff.

maybe I should consider BDO if another 2 firm rejected me.
*
Now peak season for tax department only.

Oh wait, tax is always on "peak" laugh.gif

Try Assurance, they are always looking around this time for the big April rush.

If not, take a step back and get employed in any firm 1st.

Be proactive and apply for Big 4 as often as possible tongue.gif

Show them that at least you're holding an employment rather than sitting down at home and do nothing.

Hi,

I'm ACCA Affiliate and get offer from PwC for IAS department(Personal Tax). I'm in dilemma whether should I accept the offer since some of them told me the career progression is quite narrow. Beside that, Deloitte and KPMG has no vacancies for tax.
Any advice for me? I wish to know the career progression in IAS and will it be quite narrow as compared to other department if I start my career with IAS.

Thanks.
*
Career progression would be up to yourself.

If you are capable, surely they have no option but to bump you to bigger responsibilities, positions or whatever.

PwC is a good starting ground, you should consider their offer seriously.

Apologies, agree with your statement. My reply was skewed towards consulting and possibly strategy roles too.

A side observation though, at least from one of the Big 4 firms, new associates (entry level) often have some sort of prior experience.
*
Even large consulting firm do hire fresh grads, just that you gotta be damn good to qualify.

But as for strategic roles, maybe prior experience is required.

QUOTE(imabunny @ Sep 21 2015, 08:16 PM)
Fair enough I suppose it does vary across Big 4 and I can't speak for the other 3, only for the one I was at which always sees influx of new freshies.
What is it that you don't like about audit? Is it the work or simply the hours? Do you see yourself eventually going into Finance and if so would you enjoy the work?
*
I don't like the process of documenting everything I found and repeat it on a daily/weekly/monthly basis tongue.gif

Can't complaint thou, Audit does come with a pretty decent paycheck. laugh.gif

Okay. Some told me pay is good which is part of the reason.

Junior's pay ain't really good tbh.

You can make more outside if in terms of monetary growth ( working the same thing, of course )

The difference only kicks in when you're a Manager or above.

Hi all,

I just got a call from PWC for a position there, the person asked me a few questions and explained to me about the job scope, but then she said she'll pass my resume to the management and will call back if I'm shortlisted for the interview.

usually how long will it take for them to inform whether or not I'm shortlisted for interview?
*
2~3 days probably.

Mine was fast. Arranged everything in almost 1 week.

so if 2-3 days no respond from them that means I'm not shortlisted for the interview?  sad.gif or will they inform me also if I'm not shortlisted.

anyway let say i did got shortlisted, can anyone help me with this:
what kind of Tax related question are they gonna ask? it has been 3 years since i last took Taxation subject at school, and I only achieved B+, will that affect the interviewer's perception of me in any way? or will they just judge me on how well i present my self?

thanks.
*
Nothing too technical unless you are coming in as experience hire.

QUOTE(ks0108 @ Nov 5 2015, 11:29 PM)
Hi guys,

I need some advice as I am facing a dilemma

I have worked in a small audit firm for 3 years and had recently completed all my ACCA exams (currently an ACCA affiliate) and waiting for the approval of my ACCA membership. I am planning to leave the firm on December but am not sure how the big-tier firm or the mid-tier firm will offer and what post should I apply for (AA2? SA1, SA2?) as I heard my experience will be significantly discounted. If it is true that I will be offered AA1, I think I shall go to commercial after the approval of my acca membership.

I need the advice from the sifus here.....
*
Probably go back all the way to Junior laugh.gif

Junior, senior not much diff la ( 1k or so at most only. Maybe for people it's big difference la lol)

Once you're AM / M level, can see a bit of difference la.

Side note : plenty of pretty girls in audit. Good reason to take a paycut tongue.gif
