I'm on the MTU using the black Huawei VDSL modem...

I find the modem quite hot compared to other devices like the router or even the power supply.. even placed on top of a shelf ( not in closed area )

Is this normal ?

As a rule of thumb, if the temp of electronics parts is higher than normal, the life of that electronics parts would be half...

Edit: Another question, I notice sometimes my connection will go completely dead. Have to "Off / On" the modem to regain connection. Anybody know the cause and solution to this?

I've similar issues, then I found out when I on and off my wireless radio on my mac, the connection was recovered... it happened not very often but it is quite annoying.. still dunno if it is mac or the wireless router.... single wireless user only... other connections connected directly to the LAN port..

my unifi modem is hot too, but then really can't do much unless you are willing to put a USB fan beside?
*
Hhhmmm, let me try to put a USB fan drawing power from the unused USB port from the wireless router to cool the modem...

This is kinda silly... ohmy.gif

Dear all, any penalty charges if we change from VIP5 to VIP10 within the 2 years contract time? Normal practice is if we upgrade, there will not be charges right?

Wanted to try out the service with VIP5 first before deciding to go for faster speed package.
*
They would love it if you upgrade the package...

I find VIP5 is more than enough for me,2 users at home only...

I had a RRD/MRTG style graphing tools running since I started using Unifi in Sept...

I am consider average / heavy users, sometimes download lots of movies, torrents at other times, nothing much.... daily 2 PC are using Internet for regular stuff like e-mails, surfing and facebook and fb games...

This is what I found out over 4 months of usage... based on average usage, not peak bandwidth...

By year graph - less than 1.5Mbps average
By month graph - 2M - 4M average
By week graph - average 2M - 4M, sometimes hitting 5M...but very seldom..

* all figures in bits per sec

So if you take VIP10, for an average users, it would almost never hit the 8-10Mbps average monthly graph for less than 3-4 users...

i have a question about unifi and torrents.

currently i just have unifi installed at my home.

previously, i paused a download with my bitcomet client while using streamyx.

can i continue downloading with unifi?
*
It SHOULD, bcos it is only a change of IP address and bittorrent is a very robust protocol... smile.gif

Now you should get same upload & download speed...

Is it true that Unifi HyppTV (or whatever it's called) requires HDMI connection to the TV?  I'm using CRT TV, does this mean I cannot use HyppTV?  I'm considering getting VIP5 (RM149) to replace my 384kbps Streamyx line (RM61) and Astro (RM95).
*
Nope, you can run on either RCA (yellow, red & white) , composite or HDMI..

But the shows offered cannot be compared to Astro... I only watch CNA ( Continuos Negative News from Singapore ) on Unifi IPTV only..
