I have two question for the experienced unifi users here. Thankful for anyone who can provide some answers:

1. Does the s/pdif audio output from the IPTV works?
2. Unfortunately from my existing network cable set up, I can only use ONE Cat5e cable betw the router and to the IPTV and HTPC. Instead of swapping the existing cable betw IPTV and HTPC to playback, can I put Two switches in this manner:

Unifi--Router Dlink615 & Server ===== {switch} ----------------------- {switch}==== IPTV & HTPC

Note: === double cat5e
------ single cat5e

Switch I use will be the managefree Dlink switch. Not sure if the switches manage to differentiate the type of cable it connects to.

Hopefully the simple diagram makes sense.

Maybe I can help. What do you want to know?
As I am also a beginner, but my house has the network cable set up before unifi arrived. Perhaps my experience can assist you.

Hi there wiraone, it has been a long time smile.gif

I use Dlink Green switch on top of the router to divert the line. Interestingly, I can connect a switch between the IPTV unit and the router, meaning to say by doing so, the IPTV unit can be installed at any ethernet end from the switch itself. Here's how I do it :

Original configuration:> ------[fibrehome/ZTE unit]------[DIR615]-------[IPTV set top box]-----TV

Add a switch:> ------[fibrehome/ZTE unit]------[DIR615]------[Switch]---[IPTV set top box]-----TV

The advantage of adding switch is that the IPTV Set Top unit can be detached and move to any of the networked room.

I even tried to add another switch (bought one just to try on) at the set top box end, but it fail to detect the IPTV signal.

Well, I would love the double switch configuration as I only have ONE Cat5e cable in betw my router and HTPC & LCD end. So if it works, I won't have to swap the ethernet cable whenever I want to watch TV with HTPC or with the IPTV.

Perhaps when TM called later for feedback, you can tell the TM about the extra charges. If it is valid then its ok. But if they charge extra out of the ordinary hopefully TM will get the feedback and blacklist the contractor.

TM guy called me up on the day, during the service to find out if the contractor did arrive, and after the installation too. Nowadays their feedback service is much better I think.

For those who wants to wire up the house, I do recommend to use Cat6 once and for all.

Hi Peter .. long time for sure .. what happened to the motor trader forum? gone for good? seems the new board is so difficult to use and I given up smile.gif
My networking knowledge is not good but the above config won't work. Plain switch won't do routing .. the DIR615 splits the IPTV traffics .. adding a switch won't help to combine and split the traffics back to iptv and internet .. if you're worried of running long cables, I guess you could try that powerline thingy.. no idea if it works but some say it works okay for them. As for me .. I've never switch on my IPTV after they started charging for "premium" channels .. I've Astro and that should be good enough.

Ic. Thanks for the info. Me being noob have to experiment in things like this.

What's the diameter of the fiber optic cable? Anyone?
*
When they exposed it, what I saw is just about 1mm or even less. Its not much more than our hair really.

should work.. since homeplug is just a bridge only...

unless that homeplug is advance to strip out the vlan tags on the data packets

Will the homeplug reduce the speed of data transmission?

Indeed.

At home I am using build-in wall Cat5e cable connecting a home server to a HTPC. Both ends come with Gigabit Lan but only connected with Cat5e, I use a Dlink Green Gigabit Switch to do the connection.

Server: Acer Aspire Easystore H342
HTPC: Gigabyte MA785 series.

When I ran Bluray ISO (with full 40GB file size, ie. no compression whatsoever) from the server, there is lagging, even though theoretically there should have enough bandwidth along the cabling.

I suspected it could well be either the switch that causes the limitation, but really I don't know how to ascertain that.

Added on January 16, 2011, 12:33 pmFor that reason, I suspected that the homeplug may have bigger limitation than my set up.

No lah, just a simple home set up no need to do the test I thought. Other 3com product maybe a bit of an overkill. So just go for an Alcheapo stuff.

My htpc should be powerful enough for decoding, its 64bit win 7 run on 4GB with quite a latest mobo. I have no problem decoding it when I ran the same file from the htpc itself. Only when I stream it from the server.
