If both your DIR-615v2 and Buffalo can connect directly, this already rules out a configuration change on their side (router MAC address filtering?). It's likely an issue with your RB250 configuration.. redo the configuration (double check the port forwarding and VLAN setting -- http://unifi.athena.my/mikrotik_rb250gs.html ). If you need to set VLAN500 on the Buffalo, the Mikrotik is not doing its job. And when you want to test the RB250 again, plug your PC directly into the port and use the operating system PPPoE dialer.

Your last option would be to enable port mirroring and manually analyze the PPPoE discovery -> logon sequence using wireshark.

First of all I would like to thank rizvanrp for his work on setting up the RB250 for use with your existing/favorite wireless router. I've purchased the RB250 (fw1.3) and using his article to setup the RB250 and running 24/7 for the last 3 weeks without any problem. I concour with him, if you need to setup Vlan500 on your router, RB250 is not configured correctly. Mind you not all routers can setup vlan and you should use only PPoE dialer on your router if you are using the Mikrotik else why purchase the latter?

Why use the mikrotik setup, some may ask? Well the Dlink615 is a melon, it runs hot and wireless signal is very poor and variable. I'm using my old Dlink 655 and also the TPLink941, both runs cool and give very good wifi signal getting 3-4 bars downstairs when the 615 hardly gives 2 bars. I can confidently run the mikrotik and BTU 24/7. I can also use my old Dlink 600 configured to run DDwrt and using its PPoE dialer.

Cheers

Agree with you. I've been using the RB250GS for the last 2 - 3 months and never once the switch hanged or something like that. Since you have both the TPLink941 and DLink 655, both of which I am considering to buy, could you comment which is more stable and which gives better throughput? Thanks.
*
I bought the TPLink941 because of its claimed better wifi signal strength and only RM109 on offer fom All IT in LY. Yes it gives consistently 4 bars signal downstairs and I think slightly better than my old D655 (varying from 3-4bars). The D655 is however a giga router which you might not require as I have another giga switch to connect to my NAS and 2 other computers. The built quality of the TPlink is probably not so good as my new router has a loose aerial connection but they have a 1:1 replacement policy and I had it it replaced with no question ask! @ just over RM100 against RM280 for the D655 I think the TPlink is a steal and a good spare router for kiasu guy like me who hate losing connection to due to HW failure. I've in fact a spare RB250 to save shipping cost from Spore!

Cheers

i found it hard to get wifi signals when i'm at the 1st story of my house
is the RG very bad in giving signals?
is it possible to use my old router ?

It's common knowledge that the Dlink 615 gives very poor and variable wifi signal. The most common solution is to use the mikrotik RB250GS (follow bro' Riz instructions) as a programmable frontend switch so you can use your exisitng/favorite wireless router. The most affordable and powerful wireless router is the TPLink 941 which I am using. My old Dlink 655 also gives good wifi signal which I use as a spare when I require the giga ports.

So there is simply no way to use your own router as a Residential Gateway like DIR-615 where wireless access point, VLAN tagging are done by ONE device only? 'Cause I was thinking of buying another router to replace the DIR-615 WITHOUT the need of buying an extra switch like what recommended by most, the Mikrotik routers..

This is the good news everyone is waiting for but beware, get the correct version of the TPlink hardware.

"Finally, both internet & IPTV is now fully working on the TP-Link TL-WR841ND !! rclxms.gif biggrin.gif
Thanks to TP-Link engineer team in making the first retail replacement for TM's DIR-615 notworthy.gif

Our nightmare on DIR-615 is now gone, we can now get a affordable yet much better product out there, and we won't worry about TM's monopoly tactic anymore! tongue.gif

I'll update the firmware download link (specially for TM-UniFi only) once I get confirmation from TP-Link team.

Stay tune ....." quote klseet

If you are happy & satisfy with the DIR-615, then no need to change it.

Actually the whole idea is for UniFi users able to find alternate replacement in the open market with cost effective & better product build quality in mind.
Imagine what happen if there is no alternative and eventually the DIR-615 failed (which is very common) and we are forced to go back TM again??

I agree with klseet, we should have our own and a wider choice of routers for unifi, just like in streamyx. Actually the Dlink 615 G2 appears to have resolved most of its reliability issues as we don't hear much on failures nowadays. I still think the weak wifi issue is still not resolved and the router runs hot. In fact I'm a Dlink fan. I've Dlink routers from D300, D600 and D655, not to mention the ancient non wireless 704/714 series and all still in working condition.

IMHO using the mikrotik route is the best as there's no learning curve for old streamyx users, just config to dial PPoE to unifi with any stock router. I'm running 24/7 with this setup for more than 2 mths with no problems and I think this is the most reliable setup and easy to trouble shoot.

Cheers

forgot to mention...the installation guy test another dir 615 on the spot n same result...even he got a headache y this happened...maybe ill opt for another wifi router...

The poor wireless signal from the 615 is a well known problem. My installers laughed when they noticed my complaint of 2 bars signal downstairs, itu biasa they said. If you have followed previous threads, the best solution is to use the mikrotik switch as the gateway or now with the impending solution by changing to a TPlink 841 router with the yet to be released "unifi compatabile firmware". You will also have noticed that the 615 runs hot and if u run it 24/7, the chances of early failure is high. The works of bro Riz and Klseet to find a solution for the 615 should be commended. Read their blogs and you'll find all the solutions there.

I'm actually more concern about the outcome.. as seen in the video posted on the first page.. tongue.gif
My mom is gonna jump up and down..

Thanks for the reply, guys!

But if there are any users using homeplug, do post your comment here.

You have to first decide where you wan to put the main gateway or fibreHome. You can then use Homeplug to distribute either the lan line to your computer or line for the the STB to your TV but not both line without drilling or using unsightly cables. No lag or problem with your setup as you are probably on the same phase. I'm using Aztech HP with no problems for the last 4 mths for my IPTV (STB)

HI, i am using microtick 250 to configure VLAN. Now connecting to unifi using my own router. IPTV is working fine and runs smoothly. But unfortunately, it will hang every 10 mins and need to switch channel in order to make it work back again. Any advise from sifu here? sad.gif
*
Odd, I've been using the RB250GS for the last 4mths running 24/7 with no problems. Make sure your firmware is at least v1.2, the latest being v1.4. Try to program a different port for the IPTV, if not working, go for an exchange.

Hi guys,

icon_question.gif  I am planning to have the following setup below install at the back of a room: -

Fiber --- UniFi BTU --- [ WiFi AP --- WiFi AP Client ] --- DIR615 (WiFi On + LAN) --- IPTV (STB), Notebook (WiFi)

I would like to know if anyone having the setup above or can the VLAN 500 & 600 travel through the WiFi AP and WiFi AP Client as I don't want to have hacking of fiber cable till to my living room as it is far.

Looking forward to all your comments. Thank you.

This will not work, the best solution short of using long lan cables is to use the homeplug for your setup. There's no need for hacking using HP as long as there're plug points in the rooms.

so basicly the telekom contractor sabo my unifi? in my room got 2 L shaped fiber cable going to my ceiling

No lah, FO cable can go round corners but cannot be bent @90 degrees so when going round corners the ends are rounded to enable light to still travel. Normal copper wires can bent @90 degrees and not affect the current.

Cheers
