anyone here using Unifi for high-rise building? (VDSL2)

care to share your experience?

My experience.

1. First hop latency increases to 29ms-30ms (VDSL2) from 13-15ms (ADSL). This is due to the interleaving. Not a problem if you don't play first shooter or dota... but even if you do, it's tolerable with 15ms increase in latency.

2. Upload tend to suck. I used to be on VIP10. The download could hit 10mbps, but the upload was about 7-8mbps only max. If you subscribe to VIP5, the upload will reach 5mbps, so no problem.

3. IPTV is ok.

Overall, Unifi is good even for high rise buildings. Of course, you cannot compare with the direct FTTH . Their latency is much lower and upload is superior.

You upgraded or downgraded? Was wondering if VIP10 is worth the extra bit of money
How was the installation at your condo?

Installation takes about 3 hours only. They only need to set the jumper for VDSL2 line at the junction box below your condo. You might need to let your condo management know about the installation date because they need to give assess to Unifi staffs to do this. A word of caution, if you are on streamyx previously, you need to be very clear in your instruction to the unifi installer whether you want to keep your old line or terminate it.

In my case, they thought I wanted to keep the old telephone line. It is technically possible to retain your old number, and they will put some splitter in your condo unit to make it dual line - one IP-phone and one telekom line. I am not sure how they do this, but I was told it's possible. Anyway, they messed up my installation and when the termination for Telekom line became effective (1 month mind you) , my unifi line went dead. (because my unifi line was linked to the old copper line - not sure of the details).

Took them 4 days to realize this and the senior technicians have to come to my premise on sunday to fix the problem ( to delink the old telephone line to Unifi VDSL2 port).

I subscribed to VIP5, but the agent who signed up the package for me messed up my application. She ticked "VIP10" on the form instead. So for the first few months, I was on VIP10 and paying RM199 of course mad.gif . I just downgraded 1 month ago, with an additional RM100 charge. Sigh. Anyway, must make sure you check kao kao the form you going to sign. don't let the agent fill up the form for you. Fill it up yourself. Tick VIP5 yourself.

Anyway, while I was on VIP10, the download did hit 10mbps (1.1 M/s). I am not a heavy downloader so it makes no sense for me to remain on VIP10. Well VIP10 has additional 30 Gig data limit allowance.. you may want to consider this if you are a heavy downloader. It's just a matter of time before Unifi enforces the data limit cap. (it WILL happen).

Or you may want to try out VIP10 first.... then you downgrade to VIP5 with RM100 admin charge.

Well, I hope this helps.
