QUOTE(Shinichi @ Jan 11 2011, 10:10 PM)
Frankly reason for me to work in SG is to earn more money. But I don't think this is a good answer, right?
Don't think its good to tell this, I'm thinking to tell them "to gain exposure working overseas", will this be good enough?
*
first sugar coat with words like exposure overseas and you would like to take this as a stepping stone for your career in Singapore due to it's economic competitiveness. If its a big company you are applying, use that to your advantage and tickle the interviewers ego by praising how excited you were when you saw the job opening, and having the chance to like join the biggest bank in SG (for instance). Just don't be afraid to hint that the currency rate is a big factor too.

to me, bringing up the currency factor breaks the tension of the interview as that would normally end in a chuckle between both parties when you talk about the oh so obvious reason why people choose singapore. When the situation is less tense, i notice interviewers relax on their questions and assessment, so that's the way you want the interview to proceed.

Just don't be so blank and straight away say Its for the money and laugh alone like a doofus la... play with your words well (even if you don't really mean them)

Thanks seantang & wlcling, I know what do to now. smile.gif
Actually I'll be attending interview in KL for an opening in SG. And during phone interview I was asked this question and I tell them "to gain exposure working overseas".
*
best of luck then!

just a word of advice. As an interviewer their concern would be if you are just using them as a temporary stepping stone into singapore and thereafter hop on to another job in short time. Do try to convince them that it is THEM that you would like to build your career with. (which is why i said earlier, you need to massage their ego on how amazing their company is, etc)

oops, thanks for pointing this out smile.gif
Thanks bro for the tips, will check out available rooms around these areas then smile.gif
Now waiting for my EP before can start asking around for room rental...

For room rental in SG, can I rent a room for few months then move to another place? I don't think there will be any contract to bond us at least need to rent for 1 year right?

Thanks.

Added on January 24, 2011, 10:54 pmBased on information from IRAS, tax residents refers to those residing in SG for >= 183 days, but is it inclusive of Saturday & Sunday too?

Added on January 24, 2011, 11:10 pmHi all, following are my checklist items for Singapore new comers:

1. Accommodation  (room rental ~ S$500-600)
2. Getting Connected (phone and/or broadband)
3. Travel (EZLink)
4. Banking Account

Please help to add on if I missed any. Probably this can be updated at thread first page to ease those who will be joining us in future smile.gif
*
normally room rental contracts are bonded at 6 months minimum with 1 year lease.. that's quite the common standard. if within 6 months you leave, landlord has the right to makan your 1 month deposit (yes this is the standard too)...

i used to stay at tiong bahru area which is a convenient 25 min bus ride to alexandra point. abit expensive as since its the closest hdbs to orchard road..

Guys, wanted to ask about this.

I have been trying to find out non-HDB property prices from SG property websites, but it seems all non-HDB property prices are "POA - price on ask" only. Can't get a feel on the price range.

Can you guys share with the price range of the most affordable non-HDB property?

I am planning to work in SG. I am hoping not to rent a place due to the expensive rental (I have a family). I would prefer to buy a property, any decent / not too old / 3-4 rooms flat near MRT will meet my needs. But since I am not a PR, I can't get HDB. And applying PR for myself and my family will take a long time, and I don't want my money to go into rental.

If you guys know of any property website that list the price of non-HDB property please do share with me. Thank you!

3-4 room not too old, non-HDB property near an MRT? i think 2 mil is sufficient ba! biggrin.gif

QUOTE(elie3173 @ Jan 23 2011, 11:05 AM)
private condo costs million SGD...i cant afford it  cry.gif
*
don't fret.. i cant even afford a 500k hdb.

QUOTE(Argiope @ Jan 23 2011, 04:07 PM)
Heya, do you guys have experience with any of these 3 hotels before? Need some feedbacks on hotel condition, conveniency and location as my parents (60 y.o.) are visiting next month and prefer to stay in Chinatown and short walking distance (5-10 mins) to MRT/hawker centres.

1. Hotel Re! - $378 for 3 nights.
2. Hotel 81 Osaka - $294 for 3 nights. (If not mistaken this is located in a neighbourhood and don't have much to see/shop/walk nearby?)
3. Hotel 81 Chinatown - $303 for 3 nights. (Wotif says usual price $300/night! Sure anot?)

Thanks.
*
hotel 81 chinatown best for your aged parents since its nearest.. price is still reasonable ba at avg 100 p night... (wotif's quote is exaggerated.. only their mystery deals are worth it)

Not exactly. I'm saying if the SG job has the same kind of job scope, size/impact and responsibilities as his Malaysian job, then yes, they should offer him that or more.

If he's being offered a smaller job, obviously the salary will be lower.

*
true, should be quite equivalent, maybe a smaller company and plus singapore can easily target the IT execs from india who would gladly do it for 5k? haha just guessing... 9k RM for IT exec sounds abit too high, but then again i'm quite an IT idiot.

QUOTE(hwong40k @ Feb 20 2011, 12:37 AM)
frankly speaking working in Singapore and whether you are comfortable with it depends on 2 things (1) which stage of life are you at and (2) smart enough to know where to get cheap and nice stuff.

Thing (1)
- I believe those single guys just starting work would not like Singapore. Why? Coz there is hardly any comfort. U must rent a room somewhere at a not cheap price and you dont have a car to show off to girls. And since you just started work you probably need to rent somewhere out of the centre of city and this means longer time to travel between home and workplace. However, what you guys are missing the point is this: Singapore definitely have more opportunities for the smart ones, meritocracy here are stiff, you smart you go up faster. You will definitely get more recognised working in a big firm in Singapore compared to working in a similar big firm in Malaysia.
- For other guys at a diff stage in life such as myself who have a family and have reached a comfortable earning level, living in Singapore opens up a lot of good things. I bought a hdb flat in Tiong Bahru which is near the city, travelling using mrt to office door to door takes 30mins max. I dont need a car, my home is near to banks, shopping mall, wet market (i dun visit these much anyway, i have other sources for fish, pork and chicken that is even more cheaper and they delivery to my doorstep), clinics, bus stops, mrt, eateries etc. There are nurseries and playschools very near my home where i can take my babies to, plenty of good stuff to eat (not food courts), and necesseties are cheap if you know where to buy them from. My wife prefers to take taxi to work, it costs her $3.50 a trip and she reaches office in 15 mins, better than me, except sometimes she comes out late and there is no cab ;p She arrives back home 6+ to play with the kids. My dream is that my kids grew up well, attend a local recognised uni and mix with the right people and have a great career. My 2nd dream, to own a terrace house in Singapore later on if i can find a good one smile.gif

Thing (2)
- I can tell you this: you dont need to go to food court for crappy food and you dont need to go to expensive restaurants. There are good and nice food in Singapore if u care to be adventurous and look for them. A friend of mine came down to SG to visit frens, his fren brought him to some dim sum place in the morning. I brought him to tiong bahru market in the afternoon and his comment was " this is the first real food i have in Singapore!". If you know where to find good food, you wont go wrong. Whether its tau foo fa, fried rice, 'tai chou', western, etc go to the right place to eat and you will find, dollar to RM, its even cheaper and just as nice.
- For fine dining, if you go to really posh area and restaurants then yes prepare to spend loads. However, if you compare to Malaysia very posh fine dining you actually spends more rm to sgd. Take beef steak for example. I went to a western restaurant near Pavillion in KL, the exported beef costs RM120++! Exported beef steak in a swanky restaurant in SG will cost you S$70 or less. Set lunch in KL costs around RM20++ to RM40++ in nice restaurants. I eat set lunches in my work place in the central district fin dining restaurant, it costs me S$10 to S$30. I took that same fren i mentioned to go eat at Tung Lok restaurant in the evening, one of the best restaurant in SG and it costs me S$100 for a very nice meal for 2 and he loves it. The only food i know SG always fail in is pork noodle which somehow always kinda sucky ;p

hey dude, are you sg citizen?
