Hi guys,

I get a Electronics Engineer job at HP Singapore, i have 3.5 years experience and they offered me 3.5K. Can any engineer here tell me is this pay OK?

I think need to move to somewhere near Queenstown or Depot Road, any guys here have any rooms nearby for rent?

Thanks
*
Not sure about electronic engineering. But mechanical engineer with 3 year exp in OnG/Marine and depending on which company your attached would be getting around 4-5K or more.

A lot of folks ask " is $xxxx enough to survive?" without bothering to explain what 'survival' means to them. To me, to survive means not to die. With $60 a month, you will not die.
*
Even the bangla, indian, burmese and china labourers cant survive on 60 dollars a month on food expenses alone. And that after the fact that they cook for themselves which is generally cheaper then buying out.

The bangla and indian laborers usually spend around 80-120 for food if they cook themselves 3 square meals a day which mainly consist of vegetable curry and rice 6 days a week with one day allocated as "non-vege" day.

Just ask any laborer and they will tell you the same story or just goto any of the shipyard or mechanical engineering outsourcing company and ask their foreign staff.

Dude, I consider myself trifty but yr bordering on insane man. Seriously is it worth it? I think u can enjoy better lifestyle back in m'sia.

I always say the moral of the story is do NOT get caught. U can do what ever you want rob, rape, kill, etc as long as you do NOT get caught and if you could live with yourself after doing those things then who cares. If IF u do get caught, then YR SCREWED!
*
Haha, very true. Its quite common for alot of SME's in singapore to follow the mantra of "You can do whatever you want, just dont get caught or be prepared to pay a large enough bribe".

I know personally the son of the boss of a certain company who has escaped reservist duty by bribing a doctor to make up a report that he is mentally unfit to do his reservist. All he has to do is cough up 6k which is chump change for him.

Hey guys , I got offered with SGD 2.3k but with 2 years bond ... It's a shipyard company ...

Personally, I am expecting atleast 2.5k which eligible for me to apply for EP . I think this employer is not going to apply EP for me given that range of salary ?

Btw, Im fresh graduate with master but only has internship as working experience.

Do you think I am underpaid given that I have to be bonded with the company for 2 years ? ...
*
Most companies related to the marine line pay their staff below market rate wages as evident by you having masters but only getting less then what the median salary is to be expected from a degree hold, much less a masters.

Since its a shipyard company or a company whose business is within the marine field but most of your work is done within a shipyard. Could it be either keppel shipyard, drydocks world shipyard, sembawang shipyard or SMOE, PSA, jurong shipyard, ST Marine or PPL shipyard. Take your pick.

If your a subi and do contracts under shipyards, you have to put up with the shipyard engineers ego's, some who rival or surpass LKY.

Thanks ! ill check.
I dont have other option. I only went to this interview for singapore .. apparently they are the only company who replied among applications i have sent out T.T ...
Not much analytical thing to do here. It's either take up the challenge and work for 2 years there or wait for other option.
May I know what engineering are you ? Civil ?
It's bonded for 2 years. It's considered as permanent staff.
Mine is subsidiary of keppel group. It is said that i dont get some benefits as keppel's employees do =( (most probably the lucrative yearly bonus).
*
Are you in keppel gul, keppel fels, keppel benoi or keppel singmarine?

Im now in keppel fels, attached to transoceans key gibraltar jackup rig. Recently went down to keppel benoi, was surprised that the ship frontier phoenix was there for either some repairs or minor refit since i did some work onboard that ship last year and it wasnt long ago that the ship went to keppel tuas to fix a damaged azimuth thruster.

It aint cheap to drydock in any of keppels shipyards.

If any of you wondered the difference living in other countries compared to your own, you can try to site to see a comparison between to countries.

Which subsidiary is that? Seems rather low considering 2.5K is the norm for fresh grad with degree. Better check with them if you get the yearly bonus otherwise you will be losing out a lot. Anyway the bonus amount varies between business units. Also seems funny that you are a permanent staff but are not entitled to full benefits.
GSF Key...is it true that one of the staff there likes to take evening jogs around the helideck without PPE? My rig is just opposite yours, in light blue skirt =).
*
Not sure but i can ask around. I usually come later then the derrick hands and roughnecks.

There was one rig which is currently occupying the drydock area where the GSF Key was. I think its a malaysian manned rig since i hear the announcement on their intercom system being broad casted in both english and malay.

It's alpine engineering services =X ... hmphz ... i guess i will look for other companies =( ...   what other O&G/marine companies in sg =/..

Oh dude, you got one of the f***** up engineering companies man. Their nothing but cheap labour fronts for keppel and various other shipyards. Their more like manpower companies rather then being a true engineering firm. That and kwong soon engineering all hire alot of bangla and indian workers. Plus all the old timers at the shipyards like to bully these people for no good reason other then to inflate their self esteem.

I would suggest you try other companies, i heard NOV, halliburton or WOM are looking for people. You could give them a try. Btw, WOM means world oilfield machine.

Huh I didn't know GSF was drydocked. When I saw it, it was already jacked up at the end of the quay. What's the name of the rig? As I know it, Petronas Carigali doesn't really use JU that much, mostly semi.
GLC always have many stories one...you are with subcon? Or supplier?
*
Yup, it was drydocked earlier in the mid of march but was moved to accomodate the other rig. Took 2 days just to move it to the quay side so i relax for 2 days while they moved it to the new location.

Its either keppel, sembawang or jurong.

My bet is sembawang since keppel tuas recent bonus payout was 8.5.

Hi avyone. I am new here.

Jus wondering if I earn S$2.5 k, what is the tax rate charge for foreigner (Malaysian)in SG?

and do our income will be taxed again by Malaysian gov.?
*
Our income is not taxed by the malaysian government since were not working in malaysia and malaysia does not tax repatriated monies.

Burmese on the other hand is a different case. I was talking to a filipino and he told me that his country is facing the problem that overseas filipinos who repatriate money back are actually damaging or at best making their own country uncompetitive. Anybody have a theory on this?

Anybody know the cost of antiviral meds? Specifically "aciclovir".

A close fren of mine mom was admitted into hospital with a viral infection in her brain and the cost of the antiviral med is very expensive.

what is the residential requirement?  sweat.gif

Who knows. Its the governments OSA to keep foreigners from knowing the exact criteria they need to meet since if they did know it, alot of people would just follow the guidelines and get PR's easily.

Yesterday me and the project manager went to one fabrication workshop to check personally the progress of some items that were facing some delays due to difficulties fabricating said items.
Unfortunately this order for the custom fabricated items were done through a sub-contractor who was recommended to us by keppel fels.

Arriving at this companies workshop gave us a clear picture why there were delays since the pictures speak for themselves.

Im amazed that the keppel staff even had the gall to recommend this subi to us since its very reminiscent of a junkyard rather then a proper workshop.

I'm amaze that when your company awarded to the sub con, you all never did inspection/audit, although it was recommended by keppel fels, but you should have to take a look on the fab shop..
Who to blame?
*
Actually, it was the main contractor who sub-con it to another fella whom we have no direct dealings since we certified the main contractor but not the sub-con. Looks like my operations department has to talk to the main contractor about this matter since it is a serious breach of quality assurance.

I smell that the main contractor wasnt being truthful to us since if im not mistaken, any jobs being handled by a sub-con under the main contractor should be reported to us for a proper assessment/audit.

My project managers blaming the keppel engineers who recommended the contractor as well as the sub-con whom i think wont really matter since the sub-con is under the main contractor and not directly under us. In all likelihood the main contractors head is gonna roll.

Its also quite hard to believe that singapore which prides itself to be a modern facility for engineering and environmental awareness can even allow this place to be operating. My first though is, "Why isnt this place closed down by the NEA" since from the pictures you can see stagnant water everywhere and i thought the NEA conducts inspection at business premises.

Looks like another "Ali Baba" job.
