Like some of you I'm surprised that Houghton was released and I'm perplexed that Alan Pardew is said to be replacing him. The latter has a win percentage of only 43.75% to Houghton's 55.71%. From what little I've seen, he's brought stability to a club that was just a couple of seasons ago, Premiership fodder. I don't see what he's done wrong. I've had a soft spot for you lot for quite some time now, back in the days when the likes of David Ginola, Pavel Srnicek, Darren Peacock and Faustino Asprilla were St James Park heroes. I've always enjoyed watching you play (we did play out what is still touted as the best Premier League game ever eh?), and I still do. I backed you guys from a top 8 finish when the season started and this is testament to the good things Houghton has brought to the club since his appointment. I thought that with him at the helm, and players like Gutierez, Carrol, Ben Arfa, Taylor and Nolan in the side, and with the edition of one or two more quality players, you guys would be knocking on Europe's door next season. Shocked I am.

Read an article that says he was forced out of the club. Can't post the link at the moment coz I'm using my phone to post. Says he was practically told to go coz the money was too good. He reiterated his desire to stay hence signing a new five year deal. Club says he wanted to leave for more money. Who is right here?

Was a bit surprised by this move from Pardew which is what makes me question if he is a step up from Houghton.

I really don't see how Kuqi is an improvement from Best or Ranger?

I remember him when he was at Blackburn. Big, strong powerful lad but has the mobility of a truck. I'm not taking the piss as some may think, just stating what I know. Like I said, I've been following Newcastle off and on since I started watching football.

My question wasn't whether or not Kuqi is a long term replacement. He obviously isn't at 34. With several young forwards I can understand the logic behind going for a player with experience. Just wondering if there were better options like say Craig Bellamy or Benny McCarthy. Not being specific, just giving examples. I mean Blackpool got Beattie on loan and Rangers got Diouf. Both are at least established Premiership players at some point of their career.
