prysm,
If you've your license from your country, you could try to get the reciprocal callsign from MCMC, if otherwise, you need to sit for the exam, more info on the examination can be found here:
https://sems.skmm.gov.my/sems/exams/examinfoThe exam is run by the MCMC, twice a year, usually in June and Dec. Since the application for Dec has been closed, the earliest you could sit will be next June.
There are two classes, class A can operate on most amateur bands while class B could only go for UHF/VHF and 10m/6m for SSB. No CW allowed on HF for class B. You need to sit for class B first, you need to wait for a year after you've the class B license before you're allowed to sit for class A. Building a receiver is not illegal, transmitting on air is illegal.
Thanks for the info. I will have to wait then.

Class B RAE test consists of 100 multiple answer questions, covering the law, guidelines, electronics, antenna and radio. Class A test will be CW only test, 12wpm rx/tx.
Building a receiver is not illegal, transmitting on air is illegal. SWL is also not illegal, though getting the radio without you having the license will usually considered as 'illegal'.
Am I allowed to at least build a 1 to 5W transmitter and test it off the air using resistive loads?
