Hi all noob here. It has been quite difficult to find information on radio, so sorry if I seem to be beating a dead horse here.
I want to get a portable walkie talkie like those cheap baofeng uv5r for personal/family use like when travelling, convoy, hiking etc. From what I understand I can get those type of two way radio and tune it to the above mentioned channels for use without having to sit for any exam or get licensed. SKMM Class Assignment

What is not clear to me is do I still need license to own the equipment?

Baofeng UV-5R has wide frequency coverage which includes some amateur, commercial and UHF-CB frequencies. You'll surely can't use the VHF band at all without license but you can use it for those PMR/FRS frequencies (UHF-CB).

You don't need a license. You are good as long you don't have frequencies you are not allowed to access on your radio. Only program the allowed frequencies.
