I am in Form 5 this year , and i was down with a sickness which prevents me from sitting for SPM . I am currently under treatment and the doctors advised me not to take SPM . How unfortunate . Can i know whether college will accept students without any SPM cert ?

yeah, apparently UTAR doesn't need SPM cert but you'll be forced to go through extra subjects such as english 91 which is for O-level

No,
generally speaking, MQA requirement will prevent colleges/Universities (unless those that offers special certificates or stuff like open university that takes in people who have worked a few year) from accepting anybody without an SPM or it's equivalent (O-Levels etc.) from enrolling into pre-u/foundation/diploma etc. level courses.

You can apply to MOE to have special arrangements when you sit for SPM depending on your sickness (like extra time etc.) but you can not continue your studies without meeting the minimum requirements to enroll into colleges that requires SPM or it's equivalent.

I don't know what kind of sickness you have and I can't really judge without knowing what it is but you have to note that there are a lot of people with chronic disease who take SPM and got good results and go to College/Uni while recovering/while undergoing treatment so it's up to determination.

I am diagnosed with leukaemia ..... The treatment is quite a long process and complicating.
I am not encouraged to stress myself ...

I have a cousin who had a brain tumor. The removal surgery did bad effects to her body, she even lost her memory for a while etc. after the surgery not gonna evaluate much, but she took SPM and got a couple of As and all credits. Since she's determined to study and even now still undergoing chemotherapy and all.

It's up to your determination ^^ Right you should not stress yourself and probably skipping SPM is the right choice for now. Just do whatever is in your capabilities. Study little by little, all you need are credits to enter college.

Just like age is not a factor to enter college, it is not a factor when taking SPM as well. Just take SPM next year or the year after that get good results then enter college then ^^ Be careful of the changes in SPM in the years to come ^^ good luck.

I hope you recover ASAP. Your will to study should be an inspiration for all. I know many who are your age, are perfectly healthy, and are perfectly able to, yet they'd rather waste their lives and enroll in bollocks courses/classes in school.

age is never a matter..... get cured... study harder... be more prepared then you need to... get a scholarship and go chase your dreams.. but for now... very rare colleges take in students without SPM... almost none i would say... you could try with trial results though

Entering colleges using trial results means that you are entering on a conditional basis before your real results are out. They will still want your real SPM results when it's available and if those doesn't meet requirements they can kick you out.
Most colleges won't take in students without SPM because the MQA dictates that the student they accept must have SPM or those that MQA deem equivalent like O-Levels,American High School Diploma etc.

Well I must say something, for somebody at your age to be diagnosed with leukemia must have been a devastating news to you.

And what impressed me was your positive will to continue studying, but yeah like what your doctor said; don't stress yourself first. I think you should go ahead with your treatment and therapies, and then slowly think of the alternatives. In fact I'm pretty sure if you write in to MOE and request to delay your SPM to be done at a later date/year, I think that could be done

I wish you good luck and all the best!

hey, before anything, i wish you all your best in treating leukemia. Hope you will get a speedy recovery and by God's will you will be healthy and running like a normal person.

So back to your topic, if it is by the doctor's advice to not take SPM this year, then you should heed his advice. I'm sure u can get the doctor to write a report and send it the government. I'm positive about them giving you the chance to take SPM once u recover. It is going to be difficult to enrol into any college without the SPM qualification.

If you wish to take SPM this year, then maybe u can focus on some important subjects. BM, BI and Maths? I think u just need 5 credit to qualify for every college.

one thing that is not screwed up about our education system is age.. There's no limit as to how old you have to be to sit for any exam

I don't think you can enroll into an university or college without the certificate of SPM (there might be some exceptions). You'll need it to prove that you have fulfilled the entry requirements.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I sincerely hope that you may recover soon biggrin.gif

One of my friends was diagnosed with cancer 3 years ago. He didn't go to school but self-studied at home. Finally he got straight As in PMR. When we were in form 5, his cancer relapsed. Again he didn't attend school for the whole year. He self-studied at home. His condition became worse when we were sitting for the BC paper. Few days after the SPM, he left the world. When the result of SPM was revealed, he got straight As in it. I'm not trying to provoke or do anything stupid. What I want to tell is that actually you could try to carry on with your study. Why don't you self study at home ? Just don't make yourself feel stressed. It doesn't matter what result you get in the end. As long as you've tried your best.

If you insist on skipping SPM, it is better for you to ask for a report from the hospital. Send it to the government. It should not be a problem for you to be exempted from SPM.

Good luck smile.gif

Universities/colleges that require SPM or equivalent will not accept somebody without it no matter what. MOE may give special treatment to those with serious illness when taking SPM like special arrangements, extra time etc. but whatever it is if you want to go somewhere that requires SPM you must get through the exam or something deemed by MQA as equivalent. TS can take SPM as a private candidate as many times as possible in later years to meet the minimum requirements so there's no problem with skipping SPM this year just that he has to be careful with the changes that will come in the near future like change of BM and BI Komsas and Literature components, change of science and math back to BM from BI, Sejarah becoming a compulsory pass in 2013 like BM and whatever else that comes up.
