I have D3100 body, and pretty much falling in love with it.
D3100 is a DX model with no focus motor build in the body itself.

Currently I only have kit lens which is 18-55 mm f/3.5-5.6G and I am thinking to buy a prime lens for my daily use.

In fact I am confuse on what lens should I buy.
either AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G or AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G
I read on the reviews. Both are giving an amazing and stunning picture as the result. but I am curious on which one should I go for.

Since AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G prince is 2.3X of AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G price, I need a strong justification on choosing AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G. rclxub.gif rclxub.gif

I will use the lens for portrait.
and I heard from my friend that AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G lens will eventually become 52mm on my D3100 body, is it true??
Is there is any 3rd party recommended lens to substitute this two lenses? of course affordable as well. drool.gif

any advantage or disadvantage on choosing one over the other lens??

Please help me on this decision making NIKON sifus.

Don care bout which is better 1st, try 35mm and 50mm in your kitlens and walk around...... see whether which focal length u can tahan.... haha, DX users 50mm is really just for portraits IMO!! Can't do much, group portraits oso diff, too tight!
*
how about 35mm?? is the sensor in D3100 makes it into 52mm??

Yes!! U X1.5 ma..... DX cropped 1.5X, but ur 18-55 oso works the same, 18mm X 1.5 - 55mm X 1.5 =27mm - 82.5mm

Thanks bro.. where can I get information about those cropping anyway?
because I really need it for my guideline.

any 3rd party lens as the recommendation??

AF motor = auto focus motor.

Since D3100 lack AF motor on body, lens need to have AF >">
If lens no AF, means you MF lo..

Correct me if I'm wrong tq~

if you have AF on your body and AF in your lens will it affect the performance?

Bro and sist. I am new in DSLR photography yet I am willing to learn more about it.
Here some of my questions, please give me guideline.
I just knew that canon lenses will work on nikon body, will it any degradation of the lens performance or something especially if I am using EF50mm f/1.8 II (canon lens) to substitute AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G (nikon lens)??
Since I am using D3100 which has no built in AF I want to know whether that canon lens could give me the auto focus as well or not..

Has anybody ever tried using canon lens on nikon body??

Secondly, I want to know what is the difference between DX lens and normal Nikoor lens? Will it give a degradation of performance on DX body?
E.g. I am using AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G which is not DX lens on my D3100, what will happen?? should I go for AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G instead? is it better in term of portrait capturing performance on my D3100 body??

Please show me the path..! biggrin.gifD

QUOTE(yushin @ Nov 21 2010, 07:05 AM)
I'm not sure what your friend actually told you but as far as I know, cannot lens cannot work on Nikon body. There are a few reasons :
1) Canon mounting is different from nikon. Canon's mounting size is much bigger than nikon. They are physically and electronically incompatible.
2) Canon lens don't have manual aperture control, you have to shoot wide open.
3) Canon lens flange distance (44mm) is lesser than nikon(46.5mm), you will not be able to focus to infinity.

Nikon mounting are universal, you can mount FX lens on dx, dx lensw on fx. The body will automatically compensate for the smaller image circle. In simple word, yes, FX lens can use on your D3100. Take note that only AFS lenses will AF on D3100, you will loose AF if you use AFD lenses.

On DX non motor body, this is the normal practice for fix lense
shoot normally, get afs 35 1.8
shoot potrait, get afs 50 1.4

ps: The only way I know that can use canon lense on Nikon is by using a macro reversing ring. But your still can't control the aperture unless you have canon body on hand in which it will defeat the purpose for using d3100.... whistling.gif
*
so what do you think? since I am using D3100, should I go for 35mm f1.8 G? or 50mm f1.4 G?
about DX lens, does it mean both DX lens and non DX lens has no difference??

Meter off the bright background, lock in the exposure, and reframe your subject, then take the picture.

Sorry for asking the same question, can you please explain me in detail?

Let me remind u that the nikon 35mm is only around RM780, where's the sigma 30 1.4 should be around Rm1600 and 50mm F/1.4 AFS is around RM1800...
*
for me budget is not a problem. Since I love to do portrait photography and wanted to have nice bokeh, which one do you think better?

I tried once 50mm f/1.4 AFS however I think the range is too far as it is not DX lens. how about sigma?
will I get 30mm or 45mm??

I dunno the pricing in malaysia yet, however many thx.
I just know whatever lens I have it is x 1.5 I thought it will only apply for those non DX lens.

QUOTE(KTCY @ Nov 22 2010, 03:42 PM)
Budget not a problem ? Get 35mm f/1.4G. Way better than Sigma flex.gif
And your mindset is wrong. Be it DX or FF lens, on DX body, you still need to x 1.5

Bro. When do you think one should upgrade their kit lense?
I bought my DSLR like 1 month ago, and I am thinking to upgrade my kit lens 18-55mm to 50mm f\1.4G?
a lot of people say it's too soon. as I only know DSLR for 1 month, I myself find it kind of true as I saw people carrying their kit lens for 10 months even more.

So I am wondering when is the appropriate time for upgrade the kit lense??
is it when you know aperture, iso and shutter speed?
or anything else??

Whats your budget range?

Actually from my perspective , it depends on the user when it's time to change lens...
I usually use the same lens for a while then grow a bit bored of it , and with thousands of pictures taken with it...
When you know those stuff , it actually improves your photography and the picture will come up more details and wonderful

It also depends on your budget~
Some people just buy with the kit lens and its sufficient with it...
*
Well, for me I want some nice bokeh like what 50mm actually give, those circular bokeh, I am wondering whether it's my skill or limitation of kit lens to be unable to produce those bokeh..

I have approx 2k as my budget.

Moving from kit lens to 50mm is not an upgrade. Its two different things.

U need to stop worrying and go out take photos. Ia your hobby taking photos or is your hobby collecting camera gear?

U r like just got driving licence, but want fast car with amps n subs and bodykit. Then later go langgar tiang lampu. For crying out loud just learn to drive first??

baru tau itu bukan upgrade, apa kah tu??

You need to bring your fast car first so he can dream and be a good drive someday so that he can drive like a pro with that fast car..
In other words..
Just langgar him!  laugh.gif

QUOTE(adriancs @ Nov 23 2010, 12:02 AM)
Its your skill. Kit lens can take that perfectly well enough if you just try to find out why instead of thinking of expensive lenses.
*
Well. thanks. That means I should stop worring about the lens for the timing. I just felt reading forum too much can cause you poisoned which eventually take away your penny moneyflies.gif
