What is your other equipment? And what settings are you using now?

U have to give more details if you expect the forum to be able to help you.

I using YAMAHA RX-V467 AMP.

I go to MENU->SPEAKER SETUP->CONFIG->SWFR (i actually MAX the sub vol in my AMP).

I select Music setting. The sound is very clear for vocal. Is just the BASS is not SOLID enough.

I using normal RCA cable.

I had this sub last time, there's nothing wrong with the settings, the sub is a bit too polite and driven hard will cause it to distort and vibrate. If you want a better sub, go for Velodyne CHT series.

Ok, so your sub lacks the "solid" sound you want. First you have to determine if it could be the sub itself (i.e. not high performance enough) or your placement.

A sub is not "plug and play". To get the best out of a sub you have to experiment with placement. Please check out some of the articles on sub placement/positioning on the net. Then experiment with moving your sub around. Like azbro suggested try putting the sub in a corner (this helps to boost output).

If after some experimentation your sub still not giving you what you need, then perhaps it's time to upgrade to a better sub.

I think azxel meant is whether you are playing music from bluray, CD, mp3, flac, etc. As you know some are lossless, some are lossy.

Personally, while there is some difference I think those differences are minor (or maybe I don't have golden ears like others smile.gif).

As for down firing sub, there are many threads about this on other forums:

I think the Velo CHT-10Q is about 2.3k.

There's actually an old thread about it: http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1257653

Anyway, before you purchase always go and audition first.

I noticed my mp3s also have different sound quality... something to do with the 'kb'?

Now back to topic.

1st.Did you set the Front, Center, surround speakers to "small' or "Large" on the AVR.
If you set the speakers to "Large' but using small speakers, there will be no bass coming out of the Subwoofer.
If you set to "Small" for Small speakers, the bass freq will be directed to the Subs giving you better bass.

2nd.I also did encounter loss of bass between sources. Only to find out that between sources, the settings is also different.
Depends on the AVR, you will need to set the settings again...if not they will be on default settings.
Example, if you have set the best setting for the DVD source, the same setting might not follow for TV,VCR or multiple input source.

That could be the reason rclxms.gif

Never set the Front, Center and surrounds to 'Large', unless you are using a very expensive and powderful AVR and massive floorstander speakers with 10~12 inch speakers built in!

Set all to "Small". By doing so, the low freq will be diverted to the Yammy Sub.
You will even get better sound from the surround speakers and also lessen the AVR load to play all those bass sound.

Try it out smile.gif

And remember, If you use multiple sources....check between the sources that the setting remains the same.
Example media player and Bluray player Large/Small, Tone etc settings. On some AVR models, you need to set again.

Note: YST-SW315 should be adequate for most ppl except for those bass head sifus replying in here. Dun get poisoned by them laugh.gif icon_rolleyes.gif You should be fortunate to own a Yammy Sub, other ppl like me only cap ayam Sub, before that, I was DIY Subs with old components and cheapo jalan pasar speakers..hehe

1 More question. If i use my Laptop to play music.
What sort of cable should i use ? izzit the banana head ?
(output from LAPTOP into my AVR input infront of the AMP)

or shall i use RCA cable to input my AMP and Buy a converter for RCA into banana head.

Set all the speakers to "Small"....Front, Center and Surround (back)

Laptop? doh.gif well, most of the time you will get only stereo from a lappy...but can you be more specific what model / brand is your lappy. Wanna check the specs.

I guess if you want to use it for music only then its OK for stereo.

Hey, a word of 'thanks' goes very far smile.gif

If I'm not mistaken, the Dell Studio 15 comes with HDMI port and the means of getting a 5.1 audio out of there.

Your Yammy AVR also has HDMI inputs..

If you dun have a HDMI cable lying around, just go to Tesco and get the RM19.90 cable to test it out.

Basically, you can categories HDMI cables to free, cheap, expensive. and then there is the standard 1.2, 1.3, 1.4..1.3 itself got a few variant...

But no need to confuse yourself...go to tesco and grab one

Here is how it looks like. Pictures from a member named PrincCaspian:

user posted image

And remember this, I can't guarantee you it will work, depends on you Lappy and the software.
but at RM19.90, its worth trying it out..but if you connect it to AVR, you need another cable it from AVR to LCD....but I'm sure you can think of that. How is your system like now?...what components are you using?...example LCD, Bluray player, AVR, PS3 etc. You must make sure all are properly connected...if not another trip to tesco will you will be tired

And when you go to tesco, go alone, never bring your wife and kids cause the RM19.90 cable will cost Rm200 out of your wallet because of the rest of the junk food etc laugh.gif

Just to clarify...

In a movie soundtrack bass info can be found in 2 places: (a) the normal speakers channel (front, center, surrounds) and (b) the LFE channel (for the sub).

Info in the LFE channel will always go to the sub. So even if you set the speakers to L the sub will still play the bass coming from the LFE channel.

Once you set the speakers to S (and if you can select the crossover freq) then that means the bass info from those speakers will be redirected to the sub. Meaning the sub will now play the bass from the LFE channel + bass from the other speakers. So for example if you set speakers to S and crossover to 80Hz, then any signal in the front speakers which is 80Hz and above will be played by the speaker, below that will be played by the sub (remember the sub will still play all the signals in the LFE channel).

Crossover depends on your Surround speakers....if they are smallish, you can set it at 160Hz for the sub to take over from there.
If they are surround speakers are capable of more bass, you can set the crossover to 80hz.

So bro...oledi set them to "small" or not? How is the bass now?

This assumes the sub is capable of reproducing freq up to 160Hz. Some can, some can't. Like the CHT-12Q and 10Q their limit is up to 120Hz only.

Try 80hz first.....then you have to play around with the settings..I can't really tell you specific what to set because this is not just text book thing. Need to be there to adjust the sound depending on your liking, surroundings, etc.

Try play around with the phase of the Sub...but usually the default should be OK.

Bro i listen to u : Put in the most corner / switch it to small speaker

Still not satisfied i don't know what else can do

Wondering izzit my darn ear problem. Even i sit beside my sub still felt lag or solid sound.

I don't know how to explain the bass quality. Like a band: the Bassist voice is louder. Then when reach the drummer bass i very low

i really dunno what to say bro....most sub box...even cap ayam ones got the capability to make the neighbors knock on the wall.

Did you up the volume or not on BOTH AVR and the Sub own volume knob?

this could be a setting issue..

Please run the YPAO room calibration. Set the volume knob at the sub to mid position when you do this.
Take some time and read the manual on how to do this correctly.
After this calibration set the speakers to small and the cross-over to 80Hz or 100Hz for the sub.
You may also be sitting in a null position. Try the sub crawl to find the best position.
Set the phase to normal during the initial set up.

Setting the gain to max for the sub at the avr will give a lot of distortion and no head room.
Try and achieve 0dB or -2dB for the sub after calibration. This will mean adjusting the volume level at the sub and re running YPAO calibrtion until you get the desired level.

This may all sound confusing and steep learning curve but once you have done it, it is rather simple.

You should at least read the manual book once to know what functions and setting it has. Then refer back when you encounter a problem.
99% of info are in the manual book.
Stuff like these are never 'Plug ad Play'.
And its really a waste of money just to sell it off just because you dunno how to set it.

Some ppl like me only dream to have a system like yours blush.gif

Now my plan is:

Since i still have no budget to buy new plasma TV

So i decide to buy a LCD monitor bout 22 - 24 inches.
Then, output HDMI from my PC to LCD monitor to play DVDs or MP3. I dont really use DVD player to watch movie. Coz my DVD player very cakai one = =

Of course it will work lah...provided your setting is correct...

I think you should need to read the manual book before asking such a basic question like that.

If you can't access the book at home, then get it printer out somewhere. blush.gif
