messed up my crunchbang when tried to install fglrx (AMD says it will support up to X.org 7.6 but CB got 7.7.. maybe thats the cause.)

Reinstall my OS after some fakap blind experiment. as usual, openSUSE (13.1).
This is my first time using Gnome since the last installation of that those ancient, rinky dink Gnome 2.x like 7 years ago. To my surprise so much wow.
Such solid feel, perfect balance of performance, stability and eye candy I never experienced in current KDE or XFCE. rclxms.gif (jakun gak aku nih)
They went little overboard with customizations restrictions, but still the overall experience is very refreshing. And this going to get even better once Wayland starts replacing X (and actually gets fglrx support much much later lol).

Yeah, I've tried GNOME 3.14 with XWayland on my Arch. The gnome activities and animation is a lot smoother and faster on XWayland. Pretty good. But it's not quiet ready for daily usage, though.

I want to try but.. ughh.. too lazy to reinstall oss radeon driver.

Should take chance when openSUSE 13.2 released tonight.

My desktop right now. doh.gif
Fglrx hates current Gnome that it refuse to run X. Apparently it has something to do with Wayland preview in Gnome (according to multiple sources on web).
looks like I'm stuck with oss radeon driver until this issue resolved.

Check whether /etc/ati folder exists or not. If not, link /usr/lib/fglrx/etc/ati to /etc/ati, then try executing amdconfig --initial
Finally reboot and see what happens.

thanks but the issue solved now.

Apparently GDM doesnt work with latest FGLRX (or the other way around). GDM just crash. The rest of gnome is perfectly working.

So I just use Lightdm instead and its working fine now.

btw showoff time - Behold! Look at my generic, plain, not amusing Gnome desktop that I definitely need not to show to anyone else because they have exactly same desktop as mine tongue.gif .

Do you use Skype? I'm having bad problem(session hangs, X failed) when using Skype especially since I use dual monitor  sad.gif

Never had such problem with Mint Cinnamon previously.

My disk corrupted and I have to reinstall.
So I install KDE lah. try test.

Deng. Im so clueless.
After so long using gnome now I find KDE is so clunky, fussy, laggy etc.
launching applications requires more effort, font smoothing (Infinality) just makes the font uglier with those colorful fringing artifacts. Installing fglrx just make the lag more apparent,
..and more importantly.. the cahsew !! I hate the cashew!! shakehead.gif

Strange.. I was fan of KDE4 before I tried Gnome 3 for first time few month back.
The only thing I still love about KDE now is it being space efficient (unlike stupidly big everything in Gnome) and its ability to remember root permission.

I am trying and tried several time to use KDE, I am finding even it is a good DE, I'll return to Gnome at the end. I guess KDE should revoke the overall concept, I just don't like it to be similiar to Windows  biggrin.gif

At the end I use KDE less than 30 min before I revert back to Gnome. sweat.gif
But this time I took the opportunity to install tumbleweed distribution. Currently its using Gnome 3.16 so many pleasant UI changes.
And also.. terminal transparency is back!! drool.gif

Hello guyz,

First of all, sorry if I'm posting at wrong section, since I don't know where to put. My question is, which one is suitable for me between Linux Mint & Elementary OS.

I will use Linux platform as my main OS for desktop home usage. I will use it for my Thesis Project (eg:Web browsing/words/editing/programming/music/video) non gaming for me at all.

As far as I heard, Linux Mint is stable OS currently and very lite. But, I fall in love with Elementary OS interface, but Elementary OS is not pretty stable like Mint. Is there any method to adapt overall interface Mint similar to Elementary OS? Or does Elementary OS is suit for my home usage?

Thank you in advance for sifus, sorry for my bad english btw smile.gif

if you want to do REAL work, then use a major distro with simple but stable UI.

If you are using Elementary OS, you may ended wasting more of your time literally using the OS itself by figuring out missing stuff, trying not to break the already fragile GUI, or even compiling supposedly unnecessary things (and get rekt solving dependencies).
hardcore Linux promoter always bait potential users with nice screenshot. But they don't tell you the horror behind it. <--prove me wrong tongue.gif

Look for the giants like Fedora, openSUSE, or Mint, preferably with Gnome GUI or its derivatives. (I found there are too many distractions with KDE. Its okay if you don't mind some clutters).
Doing everyday activities would be more awesome with latest and greatest stuff, so you may want to look for constantly updated rolling release distro like openSUSE Tumbleweed or Arch, ..well, if you are okay with updates knocking your door on daily basis though.

Disclaimer:
This is just my personal experience and opinion. eOS gives me headache on my hardware and usage pattern, but not others. so YMMV.
Im currently using Gnome on openSUSE Tumbleweed on desktop (and 13.1 on servers) , but the real reason I like openSUSE is for its management toolset that I think is better than other distro.

Nowadays Linux desktop is just so useable its no point showing off.

Just decade ago getting font smoothing working on point is something you want to show off.
