where to get it? smile.gif
*
xda-developers forum is your friend..

I am using hardcore's speedmod kernel, based on laststufo's super-optimized kernel, based on stzupy's universal-lagfix kernel..

I just installed JPD for a friend. Then installed speedmod kernel and installed superuser + tools via recovery mode. OK so far.

after much thought, will be flashing JPD tonight, how to install speedmod kernel? super user installation is the usual update.zip method?

fongwei, you can flash JPD by going to samfirmware website, download the file there and flash it using Odin
*
Guys, the kernel is installed using ODIN after you've flashed JPD to the phone. And root is a function in the recovery mode menu (clockworkmod menu, I think). Read up a bit before you try..

Tell me more about smart keyboard. What features it has? Why is it so good?
*
I dunno bro, just felt that it was right for me. Suddenly, I can comfortably type long long messages in whatsapp, handcent sms, gtalk, email and on this forum too. Looks and basic function-wise, I think SM Pro is similar to HTC Sense keyboard. Some key features of SM Pro for me:

1. Cheap, less than RM10.
2. Has calibration option, adjusts to my touch style.
3. No need to keep switching between alpha and numeric/symbol. Long tap does it for me.
4. Fairly speedy, lags a little bit sometimes, but doesn't screw up on word prediction so far (I text primary in english, with a bit of malay and sometimes hokkien words).
5. Lots of settings and options - seriously, lots!
6. Can backup & restore settings (using internal SD)

ok firstly pls forgive me for being stupid to ask this question

1)actually what the hell is kernel?
2)what does a speedmod mod kernel does?
3)if i download it in XDA where shall i place the file in odin and will it work with stock JG4 with voodoo installed?
*
1) The 'customized for Android' linux kernel sits under the Android app framework - http://developer.android.com/guide/basics/...is-android.html
2) Speedmod kernel does a lot of things - it has the base features of universal_lagfix kernel, features of super_optimized kernel and some extra tweaks and customizations of its own. Take time to read up if you can, just the first 1-3 posts will give you lots of info..

universal lagfix kernel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=814228
super optimized kernel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811660
speedmod kernel - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=822756

If still unclear, be patient and take time to learn up. Otherwise, ask a more techie friend to help do the updates for you.

3) If I remember correctly, the JPD firmware came in 1 tar file. You put it under PDA, in ODIN. Disable the voodoo for eclair first before you attempt to apply any froyo firmware. JPD firmware will need the voodoo for froyo which you can apply after installing the firmware.

i thought shld flash JM8 then JPD?? try using pit512
*
Well, this is what I did for my buddy, whose phone was on JPM (I think) with super-optimized kernel.

1. boot to recovery, disable lagfix, reboot, partitions will convert back to rfs.
2. boot to download, install JM9 firmware (pda, phone and csc) with 512 pit (repartition checked).
3. boot to download, install JPD firmware (pda) with 803 pit (repartition unchecked).
4. boot to download, install speedmod kernel.
5. boot to recovery, enable kernel tweaks, enable lagfix
6. boot to recover, install superuser + root tools

but with unknown CSC..........

better than JPO and JPA

Weird, my friend's SGS has these for JPD:

PDA - I9000ZSJPD
PHONE - I9000ZSJPE
CSC - I9000OZSJPD

How come yours has unknown CSC?

haha

my step is

first i flash with XXJM8 with .pit 512,

then flash with JPD with modem and phone, no CSC.........

so now with CSC unknown......

anyway, my phone still fully functioning........
no problem,
*
Now that's odd. I know that if you download JM8 or JM9 from samfirmware, the CSC is not there. Therefore, I took my JM9 from xda-developers forum - meaning, I downloaded OXA CSC (UK?) and flashed my friend's phone to JM9 with these, with 512 pit.

PDA - CODE_I9000XWJM9.tar.md5
PHONE - MODEM_I9000XXJM4.tar.md5
CSC - CSC_I9000OXAJM1.tar.md5

Only then did I flash JPD - the samfirmware zipfile only had 1 tar file, which I put under PDA in ODIN, with 803 pit.

Hmmm,

when i flash with JM8, i also took the CSC file from JM4
so flash together with phone, modem and CSC

when flash with JPD, i only flash phone and modem
*
What do you mean by phone and modem, for JPD? I see the JPD firmware zip from samfirmware only has 1 tarfile.

Perhaps #fongwei meant PDA and CSC.  I also couldnt find a JPD modem file - only JPE.
CODE_I9000ZSJPD.tar.md5
CSC_I9000OZSJPD.tar.md5
MODEM_I9000ZSJPE.tar.md5

Where did you guys get your JPD from? I unzipped the JPE_U.tar from inside the samfirmware JPD release but found no tar files inside..

JPD.
Would there b any different for the PDA compared to the one from samfirmware? If flashed the PDA from sam, and put the CSC from this alternative link, would there be a problem?
*
The JPD from samfirmware is 1 tarfile with pda, phone, csc components all in, I think. No need to flash it with another CSC unless you're doing troubleshooting/tweaking..

For whatsapp:
when u use the call function from whatsapp, does it use the network, ie wifi or gprs or using ur telco?

I did a trial just now, i connected to wifi, and i called my friend, during conversation, i switch of the wifi modem, and the call did not disconnect. I got a bit confuse for this, my friend told me that if use whatsapp to call, it is using the network rather than the telco.

Anyone of you care to clear my mist? hee...
*
I think the call will be a normal telco call. I just tried it too. Must be because whatsapp contact list is based on phone numbers from the main contacts db, after which it finds those friends of yours that have whatsapp installed too..

I've been using 1.7 since I got it from samfirmware's galaxy tab section. No problem at all with the sgs..

How do you know that your message receipts are delayed? The sender right beside you?

Checked with one of my BB buddies using whatsapp - her messages not taking more than 10 secs to reach me (and vice versa), which I consider acceptable.

Guys, I was window shopping earlier and decided to finally do something about the fingerprint and oil friendly and bloody reflective SGS screen. Had a matte screen protector installed - touching and moving fingers on the screen is so much nicer now (quite shiok actually), but the noticeable rainbow effect is kinda bothersome.

Anyone can recommend a screen protector that is not reflective, non-matte if possible, anti oil and anti fingerprint without the dreaded rainbow effect?

P/S I've been told that anti-reflective SPs will be matte for sure, and will definitely have some level of rainbow effect. Even the famous Steinheil matte SP does not claim to be rainbow-free (http://www.sgpstore.com/cell-phone/samsung/galaxy-s/sgp-samsung-galaxy-s-i9000-screen-protector-steinheil-series.html).
