If you old Sony 42inch TV has a HDMI port...then its a HDTV

Not necessary

, those days at transition stage got some SD TV with HDMI input for compatibility but of course final display not HD.

that means now my AMP got HDMI and my DVD player does i think~
is that means i got good quality of sound but poor quality of visual?
First you need a HD TV (upgrade to LCD or plasma) to get HD video.
Secondly your DVD player (if it comes with HDMI) is not truly HD. That's because DVD video itself is not HD. What your HDMI DVD player does is upscale to simulate a HD picture for output to a HD compatible TV. It's can't match the real thing of course.
For the real thing, you need a Blu-ray player and a blu-ray disc or a Media player that can play HD video.
