Your old TV is low resolution so it probably won't have HDMI input. HDTV normally has resolution 1366x768 and higher.

HDMI is an interface for connectng between HD devices like the newer HDMI DVD/Blu-ray players, HDMI AVR (Amp) , LCD/PLasma TV etc. You need a HDMI cable to connect between two HDMI devices.

HDMI cable can carry both digital HD Audio and Video signal in one cable (no need for multiple cables).

HDTV is digital TV at resolution of 720 or 1080 pixels vertically. On an analog TV, you can display HDTV resolution by using the component video (Y/Pb/Pr, or red green and blue cable) connections.

If you are happy with how your TV picture looks then it is good - especially if you connect the source (Astro, DVD player) with component video.

How old is your TV? do you feel it's old enough for an upgrade, or are you just itchy?

Not necessary smile.gif, those days at transition stage got some SD TV with HDMI input for compatibility but of course final display not HD.

First you need a HD TV (upgrade to LCD or plasma) to get HD video.

Secondly your DVD player (if it comes with HDMI) is not truly HD. That's because DVD video itself is not HD. What your HDMI DVD player does is upscale to simulate a HD picture for output to a HD compatible TV. It's can't match the real thing of course.

For the real thing, you need a Blu-ray player and a blu-ray disc or a Media player that can play HD video.

Haha, I am sorry I didn't read properly earlier. When you mentioned Old TV I thought you were talking about CRT TV. Now I re-read you post I realised you said 42" so it could probably be an LCD or Plasma or maybe even a projection TV.

Maybe you could clarify what sort of TV this 42" TV is.

And also ignore all my earlier posts until you have clarified what type of TV you are using.

What is the model number, damn it???

you know, if you don't know anything about your TV, we will do some research ourselves if you let us know what model it is, at least.

I didn't think there were any 42" CRTs - the largest I know of was 36". Anyway if it is that big, it should have a component connection and that should be able to display a picture from a HD source. If it is older, it could be limited to 720P.

If 42" then I don't think it's the normal CRT TV. It could be a projection TV. Can give the model number.

However whether it's a CRT or projection TV, what I have said before does apply.
