Hi guys,

Planning to get some speakers for my ps3 . Currently connected to a Samsung 40" , with not much space left in my living room.

Thinking of going for soundbars , something like :

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-HTS8100-So...d/dp/B000RT675G

Budget is about RM3k , but stretchable to RM5k if need be.

I've been told soundbars aren't as good as bookshelf/standing speakers ?

Suggestions welcome !

Didn't know yahama did soundbars as well. I'd look at it's older brother the YSP-4100 smile.gif

with that budget, why not get a full 5.1 setup?

I sometimes do house parties , and having a whole fleet of speakers around just takes up too much space tongue.gif

Get small satelite speakers with a sub. :thumb:

any recommendations ? I have the Klipsch GMX 2.1 & Bose Companion 2.1 for my laptop , but those only have the standard audio jack. Can't connect to tv / ps3 ...

And thanks to Alex_tan168 who pointed out the Yahama,

I'm now looking at the Yahama YSP-4100 or Marantz ES7001 smile.gif

but still open to any other suggestions, either sound bars or bookshelf speakers.

interesting smile.gif anybody knows why the sony can be priced so much cheaper than the samsung , but still have a subwoofer ?

I know the samsung has wireless streaming etc, but don't think that's worth 700+USD more .

i think, soundbar can never beat cheap htib.. but since your priority is space constraint, it should be fine..

you'd be suprised. I've tired plenty of 5.1/7.1 systems but they just don't satisfy. Ideally I would have gone with a good 2.1 system, just too bad nobody makes them for TV's

Yamaha Sound Bar YHT-400 is quite a good one, priced reasonably at RM1800 below if you're on a budget. Getting the YSP-4000 (Sound Projector) isn't gonna make the sound much more fantastic IMHO... This is based on reviews and checking 'em out. Again, Sound Bars and Sound Projectors are ok for movies but sucks at music. They definitely aren't as good as bookshelfs speakers, especially so for music.

I'd recommend the Yamaha ones because they have HDMI inputs and output.

For me I went ahead with a Yammy 467 with 2 front tallboys, centre, surround and a sub for below RM4k eventhough I have a very small living room (10'x12' area with only a 8' wall for the tv and hts)... Sounds good for me. Someone else bought the 467 with 5 yammy bookshelf speakers and sub set for less than RM3k.

I'm considering getting the YHT-400 soundbar for the bedroom when I mount my old 32" on the wall in it...

Anything else you compared the Yamaha to ?

Ideally I would want something that does music equally well as movies. I don't mind getting a 2nd set of bookshelf speakers just for music, but not sure if this setup is possible ? to have 2 different speakers connected to 1 tv / ps3 without an amp.

Main reason for a soundbar is because it reduces clutter , and will be easiest to move (compared to any other speakers). I'm studying abroad so will have to move house each year sad.gif

How is the Yahama in music compared to the TV's own speakers ?

Of course the Yamaha Soundbar owns TV speakers as it comes with better drivers and a sub smile.gif

Since you move a lot, getting a soundbar regardless of whatever brand would be ideal

sry for late reply... and welcome. i tried yamaha abt a year ago.  for music it's abit down since it lack of mid(but compared to TV is huge improvement. bass is decent enough as it;s backed by sub(u can choose different sub) for movie it's da best in virtual 5.1 as it use alots alots of mini speaker to project the sound to different direction... i havent try da marantz 1 but from review they said it's not as gud as yamaha in virtual surround but da sound is solid enough.

try checkout new YSP-5100(havent try it but sure got improvement compared to YSP-4100)
Helpful pics, really dig the amount of twitters on the yamaha ! tongue.gif

Here's the dilemma now , I searched around my area and the shops here don't stock the Yahama bar. I want to compare it with the Sony to see how much difference it makes.

YHT-400 vs YSP-4100 vs HT-CT150

What puzzles me is why the Sony is so much cheaper ?

batter get Yamaha 1... sony sound is damn sharp...it's like mid is missing...coz using small speakers (5cmx9cm)x3 left, mid, right, each 75Watt (3.1)

thanks for that ! I'm still torn between all these soundsbars, worse thing is that the retailers here don't have them in-store sad.gif

Right now I'm considering the Philips SoundBar HTS8140 as well. It's abit old, but then 25% the price of the Yamaha 4100.

Actually is there alot of difference between the Yamaha Soundbars ? They seem to release one every 6 months ! How is the Yahama 40D vs the Yahama 600 ?

yessshhhh !! Asked around on UK Forums , and got directed to a small HiFi store about 20 minutes away from where I am. They almost had all the Yahama bar's apart from the new 5100 smile.gif

Tested out the YF63, s400, 600 and 1400. Must say I'm pretty much torn on the s400 and 600.

600 sounds sharper to me, and they would throw in a Cambridge Audio Subbie for free. And it has the auto-calibration mic feature.

s400 however doesn't sound too far behind, and it has HD Audio. They didn't have blueray discs around, so couldn't test with them. And the store was pretty cramped with all other kinds of amps as well, with the TV's on too so it wasn't really a fair test.

I'm going to purchase something tomorrow, just see-ing which you guys would recommend ?

Yamaha YHT S400 vs Yahama YSP 600

the 600 is about 50gbp, ~RM250 more expensive (and that's with add-on sub).

thanks alot halcyon27 ! appreciate the effort notworthy.gif :

to update this thread, I've now gotten the YSP-4100 paired with a Cambridge Audio S90 subwoofer. got them both from RicherSounds (a hifi chain here in the UK).

1st impressions after set-up :

Wasn't sure of what to expect , but was quite pleased with the sound. i would give them a 3 out of 5 star. It would have been 4/5 if not for the price, which on reflection I could have gotten a top end Bose Companion system.

A more indepth review to come, after using them for a month (which will be next week)
