Hi guys, just got my Acer 4820TG at Digitmall earlier today and this is my very first laptop I've owned.

Here's a newbie question I'd like to ask.. if I plug for AC power with the battery inside, would it damage the battery life or is it fine to just leave it like that?

Thanks smile.gif
*
I'd suggest you to remove battery when your notebook on AC adaptor.

To those who feel the OS is too sluggish for your liking, I'd recommend doing a clean install of Windows 7. Simplified to the 3 steps below:

1. Use the Acer eRecovery to create:
-The recovery DVD (3 DVDs): these DVDs will help you restore your system to factory default state, in case you screw up anything.
-The Application/Driver DVD (1 DVD): this DVD will contain all the drivers and applications from Acer (including bloatwares like games)
-This whole process will take about 1 hour+

2. Use ABR (Activation Backup and Restore)
-This will backup your Windows 7 key (different from the sticker below the laptop) and the Activation Cert
-Save these files to a flashdrive and you will need to 'apply' it to activate your freshly installed Windows 7 later

3. Perform a fresh install of Windows 7
-If you have a Windows 7 64 bit DVD, then it is easy - just boot from the DVD and install Windows the usual way
-If you don't have a Windows 7 64 bit DVD, then there are ways to get it.
-This whole process will take about 30-45 minutes

Note: I am not responsible for any damages to your system that may result from following this guide
*
Option (3) is not workable.
You can't use the OEM product key on non-Acer Win7. The product will not work. You can't activate the Win7.

Apparently this new model of 4820TG has improved a lot from older models.
Because my friend has bad experience with her acer laptops.
The specs are great for the price. But will it give problems? cos she's going overseas to study. it'll be bad if laptop break down
*
Ask her to purchase the notebook overseas.

could u share how u install the gc driver? having 2 diff gc make it a lil tricky, i didnt manage to updater the ati drivr last time

QUOTE(cowithgun @ Nov 10 2010, 08:43 AM)
i tried this, and it worked, no functionality lost. was using Catalyst 10.8:

"Installing the latest ATI 5650 catalyst drivers. First make sure you install the stock Acer ATI vga driver. And then Intel HD Graphics driver. Then go into the systems bios (F2 on boot) and set the vga mode to discrete in the second screen. (See screenshot below) Install the newest ATI driver over the top of the existing and then reboot the notebook. Go back into the bios and change the options back to switchable."

do note that i can't get any improvement even after using Catalyst 10.8. i also notice my temperature increased! based on that, i wont recommend to upgrade the driver.

i heard the 10.10c should give u more score in 3dmark06, and the AA is cool, but people reported that they lost the ability to change the brightness of the screen once u installed that.

for me, even the stock driver is fast enough for me to run anything i want. so, i rolled back to stock driver, with no functionality lost and cool temperature.  rolleyes.gif

the default Win7 is already installed with DX11. however, some game may required additional dll from the directX SDK, which if so, the game will provide. there are some game that still require old version of directX, in that case, u may need to install them as well, again, should be able to get from the game installer as well.
*
Just double click the driver and start installation will do.
There is no need to change to discreet mode in bios.

Yes, it is true that you are not able to change the LCD brightness with the new driver.

Besides, it is buggy if the system runs in "switchabe" GPU mode.
Change to "discreet" mode will solve the issue.

re-apply thermal paste void warranty right? n its dangerous too...
*
You don't really need to re-apply thermal paste for TimelineX series notebook.
This is because both GPU and CPU are using thermal paste instead of thermal pad.
The original paste is decent.

Nevertheless, I applied mine with Tuniq TX3, slight improvement by 3c.

Radeon 5650 in a RM2200 notebook?
It is a steal nonetheless.
It is a very good and light-weight notebook.
Acer has done it again.

Is the 3820TG and 4820TG still worth it since SandyBridge is now out ?
*
Yes, only for a short term.
It is still a good deal in January & February 2011.

Current SB i7 is priced at RM2900.
You can expect SB i5 with the price tag of RM2500 then.

I reckon you'll see brand new i7-2620 & i5-2540 in March.
Look at the core speed, it's going to wipe out all current i3/i5.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Bridge_...roarchitecture)

So, the crucial question is, can you wait?

Defects on your wifi or uni's wifi.
Try updating the driver.

Both black and silver are looking fine.
I still keep a unit of metallic grey silver 3820TG. It looks very nice.
Metallic grey silver like this. The metallic grey silver that you see on BMW. laugh.gif

Tempeture increased and cause my keyboard and the steel interface on left hand side become very hot. Just open the game for 20 minute and experience this....like this canot play for long time  T.T
Temperature is around 70 C on that moment...if overheated can claim warranty ?
*
70-80c is not overheat (load).
The temperature will probably go stagnant @ +/- 80c.

70-80c is not very hot (load), considering our room temperature @ 30c+ and air-cooling with puny hsf in the notebook.
You can't claim warranty because it is not overheat.
Don't panic.

Hmm...perhaps need extra keyboard since it realy damn hot d ><
*
Under the keyboard, there is a plastic cover + palm rest.
Plastic is not good heat conductor.
The motherboard is located underneath plastic cover. The motherboard does not have any direct contact on the keyboard.
The main heat source, heatsink fan & CPU, is located on the other side of the motherboard (facing down).
So, something is not right if you find the keyboard is so darn hot.

Read the temperature of your both GPU and CPU again, if it's 70-80c, it's just can't be "damn hot".

May I know yours is 3820TG or 4820TG?

nope. i did not overclock or anything. it just suddenly happens.. anyway, ill try re-installing the driver and see what happens later. thanks smile.gif
*
As lee said, it looks like the crash of driver due to overclocking.

As you don't overclock the GPU, it could be software issues.

Meanwhile, update the bios too.
Just want to minimize the possibilities.

So, update bios & install new driver.
Tell us how it runs then.

4820TG here...yesterday using a fan direct blow my laptop, so it is ok.  But damn cold bcos the fan direct blow on my face as well sad.gif
If not mistaken, there is an fan on left hand side to sink the heat. Perhaps heat sinking cause metal on that portion bcome hot and spread the heat to keyboard ask well.
This will happen if i open game which i think graphic card will heavy load.
Just borrow a better cooler from friend see how its perfom tonight.
I didnt put any cover on the keyboard.
Must settle tonite because still in 7 day 1 to 1 exhange.
*
I think hot is really subjective as you feel so damn cold when the air from the table fan blow in your face.

Tell us the temperature of both CPU & GPU under load.

Around 70++ without fan when touch on it seem like touch on a person who get fever..when fan swicth to level 3 and direct blow on the heatsinking area, everything is back to normal which is it 60-62'c.
Can comment on this ?
*
It should be warm to touch around the left-top area on keyboard , even if it's 80c.

Hot to touch and warm to touch is different.
One with fever is warm to touch and not hot to touch.

The heatsink & fan in the notebook is in such a puny size.
It can't dissipate heat as fast as desktop hsf.
It is normal that the temperature drops when you blow the air directly.
70c is absolutely normal temperature under load.
It's not even a concern. It can't be overheat.

Don't panic.

P/S Both CPU & GPU are cooled by a puny HSF in 4820TG. It's a good temperature if you have 70c under load.

Thanks for your explanation..
I will give a try on it..

I have another laptop which is Acer 5935G with Geforce 130M..
I have problem when updating my geforce driver..
I switched discrete graphic in bios mode..
It works when installing the latest geforce driver provided by their website..
I restarted, then the geforce driver is updated to the latest version.

Afterward, I switched back to the switchable graphic in Bios..
I started back windows, the resolution is changed to SVGA/no geforce driver..
It seems like the previous installation of gpu driver in discrete graphic has "GONE" after I switched back to switchable graphic..

Anyone can help me on this??
Sorry, if I have posted this question in wrong section..
*
Do nothing and just restart windows.
Tell us how it goes.

Which brand is the cheapest external DVDRW in the market??
I saw buffalo external DVDRW RM120..
any recommendation?
Does cheap external DVDRW comes with weaker in performance(Speed) & durability?
*
Buffalo is ok.
http://www.buffalotech.com/select-your-region.

DVDRW is an ancient technology. Speed is irrelevant.
All current DVDRW drives perform the same.
Durability, it depends on how frequent you use DVDRW. There is a lifespan for the lens.

Look at the pictures, there is only a ventilation hole on the left.
So, it should have single fan.

Nevertheless, it should not have any issue in handling heat.
Look at 4820TG, it was pretty cool with single-fan design.

that's weird.
why would acer take out one of the best thing on the laptop?
any reason for this?
i dont think that an additional fan would add that much to the price.
*
Well, the 3820TG was the exceptional.
3830TG could be just back-to-basic.

I don't see there is a special reason for this.

P/S In fact, I think the dual-fan was used due to the design of the motherboard. The AMD GPU is just butt-hurt to sit beside Intel processor.
3830TG is now running with nVidia GPU and therefore it has no issue sit right beside Intel CPU. laugh.gif
