Problems in cars are never measured on a case by case basis. Its always taken on a general note and generally Proton cars have been problematic. The first few generations actually had much lesser problems than those produced from 2000 onwards. The reason for this is because from 2000 Proton ramped up their production due to increased sales. Sadly, their QC wasnt up to par and overall quality suffered.
Most of us started with a Proton. I too started with a Proton Wira in 2001 and sadly for 2 yrs my car spent most of its time in the Proton service centre. Many major parts were changed but since it was under warranty it didnt burn a hole in my pocket. The aircon compressor, front shock absorbers, radioator and even the rear windscreen was replaced FOC under warranty. It was when my warranty ended and my gearbox started giving problems, that i decided to push off my car immediately. I lost about RM21K in resale value and i woved never to make that mistake again. I got a Vios in 2003 after test driving it 7 times in 4 states and i have had ZERO problems with it. Its still going strong and problem free despite it being 7.5 yrs old today. I have had many friends who also started with Wira's and Waja's and all of them have faced numerous issues. Proton's top guys have admitted it themselves. So no point denying that fact.
But in the last 2 years, Proton's quality has improved alot. Problems are still there as in all cars but the number of occurances have reduced drastically. It will take a long time for Proton to correct its image of being a problematic car. But im sure they are on the path towards achieving this.
especially with the waja. The QC is just not there. The vendors all rushing to finish the products. Bad images of proton because of they not very strict with their vendors.
