Am looking forward to get something set up, i can actually use 2k just to get a huge tv, or maybe i can settle for a smaller tv with a home threater system.

Any view as to should i get a 32" or a 37", generally is LCD cheaper or plasma? being able to play from SD is definitely a plus

Any cheap but good home theater system which actually has karaoke functions?

Any general ideas as to what can i expect with just RM2k?

Any views will be appreciated, and i read across someone buying a 32" with a home theater syster system for just RM1.65k, so i guess if i throw in 2k thats a better option rite?

for 2k...just a entry level HTiB you can get...
for TV, I would recommend the bigger the better to fully enjoy your home theater experience....
FYI, a wide 32" TV viewing area is actually smaller than your 29" CRT TV sweat.gif

For 2K expect to get either only a TV or a Home Theatre , not both.

I would stronly recommend you getting yourself a good and big lcd first and when you have enough money, then you can start looking at HT. What's the rush of getting both at the same time.

IMHO,i better get my self a good tv first since will be using it for a long time, then only start looking for a decent HT setup, since we can buy HT setup separately.. smile.gif

Get a Philips 3D BD HTiB for about RM1700. Keep using your current TV.

TVs are going to get cheaper faster than HTiBs. When you saved up another RM2000 next year, you may get a nice 37" 3D TV.

Guys - thanks for the input, i have actually left out the fact, i have a small house viewing it from bout 1.5 - 2m

so i dont see the need to get anything huge like 42"

in the end i did spent bout 2k plus

Toshiba Regza 32AV700E - HD Ready only ... unattractive design but at this price ok ok la - RM1.2k

Philips HTS3181, 5.1 ch ... the cheapest i can find ... plays dvd, and takes usb, the usb input here makes up the ugly and limited format on the Regza ... - RM550

Then took up an additional extended warranty, makes it a total of RM2k plus

tru, found one Samsung but was bout 1.2k, in fact design looks better than the Regza, but then less input ...

wanted a pioneed sound system, which looks nicer, but i didnt like the dvd tray ...

Yea, you can get a 32" with a basic HTIB system

Not sure what you're using this for but if you're buying this system for:
- singing Karaoke
- watching normal SD TV
then stick to your normal CRT TV and get a nice home theater system with karaoke function

IMHO.. extend your budget a bit if you can...

- Buy the best bargain for a 32" LCD TV you can find
- Buy a HTIB with Optical Input
- Buy a Media Player to play HD media files

For me lah.. the whole point of buying a LCD TV is to watch HD quality movies and series.

On a side note, I think that watching a 42" from 2m is fine. You get that cinematic feel, especially so if you're watching Full HD stuff.

Yeah been thinking of the real reason to buy one, i dont watch much of dvd, its just thew occasional weekends astro watching ...

Thats why i am not spending much on this, the home theater system - am not putting in much money, just a system to replace my broken hifi and to have radio in the house ...

Thats all, but i am thinking of getting a ps3 and a media player ... later

Yea but still make sure you at least have an Optical Input on your Home Theater System for your PS3 or Media Player so you get at least DTS or Dolby Digital Audio instead of just Stereo... unless you can live with stereo and fake surround sound smile.gif

just a side note, wats the difference btwn having both a PS3 and a media player as opposed to having just a PS3 connected to the TV? as far as i know, a PS3 does everything a media player can, plus of course the blu ray and gaming functionality. u should just go for a PS3 bro...

yup, that sounds about right bro, bcoz actually, PS3s don't officially support MKV formats, at least not yet as Sony may or may not release a patch for that. so maybe that is one advantage of a media player over the PS3, the media formats. even so, nowadays u can download videos/movies in the AVI or MP4 formats which the PS3 supports, even HD ones, so I don't think a media player is all that necessary to have.

have u ever tried this? i've tried converting mkv files to PS3 playable formats before, bt it always comes out all wrong e.g. no audio. this is all after waiting for several hours for the conversion process, which is such a big fuss. nw i just prefer to dload AVIs and MP4s.

that's quite a lot of trouble just to play HD Media files on the PS3 lah sad.gif

That's why I bought a Mede8er last time and then later retired it with a Mac Mini as a HTPC.. to be honest, I think the whole HTPC concept works great. Placing it with the main tv while having a Media Player for the second player with a portable HDD is also nice.
